Golf outing participants breeze
through 26th annual fundraiser
Sponsor signs and hole flags swayed under the pressure of brisk winds,
and damp areas from a morning rain kept golf carts confined to paved
paths. But breezy, chilly conditions on Sept. 28 did little to quench the
enthusiasm or performance of the golfers, sponsors and volunteers who
gathered for the Chamber’s 2009 Golf Outing at
Worthington Hills Country Club.
Volunteer organizers of the outing, headed by committee
chairs Bill Alsnauer of State Farm and Cyndi McAlpine of
ActionCOACH Business Coaching, tested an earlier event
start for the scramble-type tournament and received
favorable feedback. Check-in began at 9 a.m., and a shotgun
start at 10 a.m. launched players on a day of golf, food and
beverages, skill contests and prizes. Awaiting the registering
golfers was a box lunch sponsored by Monaco’s Catering.

returned as corporate sponsors for the event and also as
sponsors of the popular shrimp and Bloody Mary treats “on
the turn,” welcome pick-me-ups in chilly temperatures.
The Laurels — a welcome treat as they stopped
to warm up “on the turn.” Serving them are
Christa North from The Laurels of Norworth, and
Jenny Niziolek and Kristine Provan from The
Laurels of Worthington.
Capturing first place in the scramble-type
tournament with a score of 56 was a foursome
from France and Associates, Inc., including Scott
France, Steve France and Don Gilbert, as well as
Mark Centofanti of Columbus Bookkeeping and
Business Services, a France and Associates
contractor who also scored in the winning
foursome at the 2008 Chamber Golf Outing. Their
team won four $35 gift certificates for the pro
shop and a round of golf for four at Worthington
Hills Country Club.

Second-place and third-place winners, both with a score of 57,
were decided by a score-card vote overseen by the golf pro at
Worthington Hills. The second-place foursome included Brad Payne,
Jack Alcott, Brent Tippie and Dan Finnerty from The Laurels. Their
winning foursome won four $25 gift certificates for the pro shop at
Worthington Hills Country Club and a round of golf for four at
Kinsale Golf Course.
The third-place team, from Siemens Building Technology,

Progressive Power Luncheon at The Worthington Inn
keeps business women’s networking “on course”
Back by popular demand after its debut last fall, the Progressive Power
Luncheon of the Women’s Business Network is a great way to keep your
networking skills “on course” while enjoying a delicious lunch!
Golf carts head for the course following a shotgun start at 10 a.m. that launched the
players on a day of golf, food and beverages, skill contests and prizes. Many said they
preferred the earlier start time for the event.
Join the group for this year’s Progressive Power Luncheon on Thursday,
Oct. 22, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m., at The Worthington Inn. At each
luncheon course — soup, entrée and dessert — you’ll share business
cards and “commercials” with at least six other business women and
enjoy roundtable conversation. After each course, you’ll rotate to
another assigned table to make new connections. By the time lunch is
over, you’ll have made 18 contacts. Bring a supply of business cards and
information to share about your business.

Worthington International Friendship Association celebrates 10th anniversary of Sister City relationship
City officials, former delegates, host families and other friends of the Worthington International Friendship Association (WIFA)
(above) gathered Oct. 8 at the Griswold Center to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Worthington’s Sister City partnership with
Sayama, Japan. This month, WIFA will send a delegation to Sayama including several Chamber
members: Worthington Mayor Harvey Minton and his wife Jane, Harvey S. Minton &
Associates; Bonnie Michael, Worthington City Council, individual member David Michael; and
Anne Brown, City of Worthington. The relationship with Sayama, a Tokyo suburb in the
prefecture of Saitama, began 14 years ago with exchanges of delegates from the city pursuing a
Friendship City arrangement. In October 1999, seven-person delegation from Worthington
traveled to Sayama to formalize a Sister City relationship with the signing of an agreement that
has led to partnerships and exchanges among school groups, libraries, city and business leaders,
sports teams, arts groups and others. The delegation included Kathryn Paugh, then a board
member and now executive director of the Chamber; Paul Cynkar, now with Battelle for Kids
and a member of the Chamber’s board of trustees; and Worthington City Council member Bob Chosy. Other Chamber connections
in the Sayama City relationship have included John Butterfield, director emeritus of the Chamber (now a member of Worthington
City Council and an employee of Whalen & Co., CPAs and Consultants), who traveled to Sayama in 1997; and Theresa Messenger,
administrative assistant at the Chamber, who chaperoned a youth baseball team on their exchange trip to Sayama.
