Message from the Principal
Well done to all of the young people who have visited us here at New College
Leicester this term—you have been a pleasure to work with. We have been
delighted to welcome young people of all ages to be part of our college and to use
our fantastic facilities. From Gymnastics to Art; Maths to Science—they have
done it all and have really enjoyed it.
We are delighted to say that we will be full in Y7 in September—we have even
been asked by the Local Authority if we could take some extra pupils as the demand for places
here at New College Leicester has been so high. So we will be taking in 200 students in Year 7—20
more than our Admission number!
We hope you have a lovely Summer break and we look forward to seeing you in New College
Leicester again very soon. Working together is making a huge difference to all of our young

We are changing …… pass the on word!!
Have you been to your Local Leisure Centre recently?
We are busy putting the ‘Spring’ into our timetable over the coming weeks.
Here is a small list of new and existing activities taking place very close to you.
Free junior swimming sessions - Take place every Saturday morning from 9am to Midday.
New swimming lesson courses on Sunday morning - New courses to cater exclusively for kids
over 8 years of age. It’s another chance to learn to swim amongst your age group.
New Aqua aerobics – exercise to music in water sessions on Tuesdays 7pm in the small pool and
also in the large pool on Thursdays 8.30pm. These are fun group sessions and very popular with
women.
New Fitness classes - Also changing this summer is our fitness class timetable. We have weekly
classes for Boot camp on Tuesdays 5.45pm. We are programming new Yoga classes to help you
relax and stretch on a Thursday evening from 7pm. Come and check out our other classes too.
Fitness Gym - We have extended the size of our fitness gym and you can now use free weights and
dumb bells at the Centre. The equipment is spread out across two rooms giving more space for
you to train and stretch.
Artificial Pitch Football – Take advantage of our crazy summer pitch hire prices. Adults can hire
the 3G pitch for as little as £16.50 an hour
Come visit the Centre and ask for a tour. We also squash courts, meeting rooms, a bar and lounge
for birthday parties and functions.

Year 5 and 6 Dance Festival
In March 2015, New College Leicester hosted a Year 5
and 6 Dance festival in partnership with Maria Bilson at
‘Go Active Now’. Students from Stokes Wood, Inglehurst
Juniors, Dovelands and Abbey Primary School took part
in the competition. With the support from Maria and the
primary school teachers, students choreographed their
own group dance which they performed at the festival.
Students showed enthusiasm and respect
throughout the competition, working in partnership
with each other to share their own dance moves.
The festival was a huge success with students
thoroughly enjoying themselves. We look forward
to hosting another dance festival with Maria in the
new academic year.
Year 1 and 2 Multiskills Festival
In April 2015, Year 1 and 2 students came to New College
Leicester for a Multi-Skills festival. Students from Stokes
Wood, Braunstone Frith and Forest Lodge Primary School
took part in the festival. The festival involved students
developing basic motor skills such as co-ordination,
throwing and catching.
Year 9 student leaders from New College Leicester were a
massive support, with the students demonstrating and
encouraging the primary students every step of the way.
Although the thought of coming to a secondary school was a
little daunting for some of the students, they all enjoyed
themselves, leaving with big smiles on their faces.

Year 5 Football Festival
In May 2015, New College Leicester hosted a Year 5
Football festival in partnership with Leicester City
Football Club. Girls and boys from Stokes Wood,
Braunstone Frith, Parks and Forest Lodge Primary
School took part in the festival. Coaches from LCFC
worked with the pupils to develop their skills and put
them into a game situation.
Pupils showed great skills with several of them showing
great potential in football. Success was celebrated with
the winning team receiving medals and a sportsmanship
and skills award being presented to two individuals.
Although the weather was a little miserable, the pupils
were fantastic, showing lots of enthusiasm. We look
forward to working with Leicester City Football Club
again in the near future.
Year 5 Taster Day
On Wednesday 17th June, Year 5 students from Stokes Wood,
Parks, Inglehurst, Forest Lodge and Braunstone Frith Primary
Schools took part in a taster day at New College Leicester.
Students spent the day in various lessons around the school,
getting a real feel for what life is like as a New College Leicester
student.
Students learnt to play the Djembe drums in music; paint in the style of
Edvard Munch; discover why fireworks are different colours in Science;
play cricket in PE; make a key fob in Design Technology; act out freeze
frames in Drama; play Cluedo in French; and learn about tessellation in
Maths.
The students and staff had a fantastic day and all seem very excited about the
opportunity to be a New College Leicester student when in Year 7.

Year 5 Cricket Festival
On Tuesday 23rd June, students from Stokes Wood and Parks Primary came
to New College Leicester for a Cricket Festival. The festival was ran in
partnership with Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Specialist Cricket
coaches delivered skill based sessions alongside a game. There were some
fantastic hits, with students scoring lots of runs for their teams. Well done
to all those who took part!
Braunstone Frith Primary School’s Aspirations Week
Pupils from Braunstone Frith Primary School came to New
College Leicester during aspirations week (18th – 22nd May) to
take part in a variety of activities.
Pupils from all year groups experienced Trampolining, Freestyle
Gymnastics, Catering, Music, Humanities, French, English, Science,
Hairdressing, Maths and Computer Science.
The pupils were absolutely fantastic, really embracing the
different activities and showing an interest in the possible
careers they could have.
Inter-form Kwick-Cricket
This terms inter-form PE competition has been Kwick-Cricket. Students
competed for their tutor group at lunch times, aiming to get as many runs as
they could. Students were fantastic, being respectful of one another and
showing great team spirit.
The Year 7s showed true reliance and commitment as for many of them it was their first
experience of the game. The winning team was 7.4. In Year 8 there was a fantastic turnout with
8.6 winning the overall competition and 8.3 coming a close second.

Year 5 Gifted and Talented Day
On Thursday 11th and 18th June pupils from five of our feeder
primary schools (Parks, Stokes Wood, Dovelands, Inglehurst
and Forest Lodge) visited New College Leicester for a day.
Ten students from each of the schools were selected to attend
the day due to their academic achievements and talents.
pupils spent the day in English, Maths and Science with lessons that were challenging. The staff at New College Leicester
were very impressed with the attitude and behaviour of the
pupils and hope that they will teach them again in the future.
As for the pupils, they had a fantastic day, learning lots and
really enjoying being in a secondary school environment.
Overall both days were a huge success which is hoped to be
repeated again next year.
Year 7 Girls Football
The Year 7 Girls Football team qualified for the
County Cup, following their victory in the City
Schools league. They played against Uppingham
Community College and should be congratulated on
their excellent performance. They took the lead
early on, with a great goal from Loren Easey.
Uppingham pulled it back, despite New College
Leicester’s strong defence with some excellent
saves from Molly Newitt, leading to a final score of
2-2. The game went straight to penalties, where
unfortunately the girls lost 7-8.
Congratulations to Summer Fleck, Katja Jeffrey, Freya Jeffrey, Loren Easey, Lilly Whitby,
Debora Reis, Molly-Rose Newitt, Katie Dixon and Chloe Dunn.

English achievements
Author Josephine Feeney visited New College Leicester on World Book
Day. She had a great time and praised our students as being lovely and
enthusiastic. She later wrote a blog post about her time here saying she
had “the most brilliant time in New College Leicester.”
A small group of ten Year 7 students attended the Reading
Rampage Awards Ceremony at the Leicester Tigers Ground
on the 4th June.
The event was a fantastic celebration of the Reading
Rampage challenge where the students were able to meet
some of the books’ authors and ask them questions.
A special well done to Connie Neale-Reynolds who was our overall winner for New
College Leicester as she has managed to read all the books in the challenge!
On the 24th April, Devon lad Rich Cottell visited New College Leicester. Rich and his team have
embarked on an Anti-Bullying three month school tour, which started in January 2015. The sessions
were for our Year 7 and 8 students and were focused on promoting how to stay safe when using the
internet and social media, and how cyberbullying can affect people’s lives.
Rich Cottell is a musical artist, who delivered
exceptional vocal performances of Ed Sheeran’s
‘Thinking out loud’ and ‘See you again’ by Charlie
Puth and Wiz Khalifa. The students loved it and many
got involved in singing along to them! Rich also
played songs from his new album: ‘More than just a
geek.’
Rich then gave a talk on cyberbullying. Our students were excellent throughout and really got involved in
discussing the different ways in which cyberbullying can occur.

Year 7 Castle Competition
As part of their investigations into power and control in the early medieval period, Year 7 were
challenged to produce detailed, imaginative and historically accurate castles over their Easter
holidays. Students were able to choose how to present their castle from four different
mediums. They could bake a cake, design a poster, build a model or even create a castle in
Minecraft! Prizes were available in all four categories and competition was fierce. There were a
huge number of very high quality entries and Year 7 surpassed all expectations.
The high quality of the work made the decision process extremely
difficult; how could we pick the best when they were all so good?
However, in the end and after many long and difficult discussions,
Humanities staff, along with valuable assistance from last year’s
winner Kieran Hood, the following prizes were awarded:
