The avant-garde building conceived by Brazilian architect Oscar
Niemeyer has become super hip. In 2000, Italian fashion house
Prada rented the building to present its collection. Niemeyer has
created a beautiful building. He wanted a simple construction
without ornament. The walls of the Place du Colonel Fabien have
kept the marks of the wooden boards used to build them. Oscar
Niemeyer said the headquarters was ''a piece of work which will
constitute in this city, I am sure, an example of contemporary
architecture, and even, permit me to say, a tourist attraction.''
The main conference room with metal slates hanging vertically on
the walls is situated below ground level and has Niemeyer desks
and chairs. The room's dome (see the satellite images) is on the
lawn in front of the curved six-story main building, sheathed in
glass.

The KBcenter is a space for cultural and social interaction
dedicated to the Slovenian community in Gorizia, located in the
heart of the city's 19th century development. The center brings
together 13 organizations dedicated to different cultural interest
and age groups. The brief required the adaptive reuse of an
existing building as well as the realization of a new two storey
structure to house the library in the interior courtyard. The new
building was conceived as 'a large piece of furniture which slides
on the courtyard floor', in order to maintain the intimacy of the
courtyard and garden. The frame-less façade is realized in
synthetic wood and glass in order to create a delicate insertion
into the urban fabric with neighbouring buildings less than five
meters away. The large windows act as program displays allowing
for visual connects between the interiors of the library and the
refurbished garden space.

The architectural design of Tower Block C is derived from the
competition design, as outlined in the study submitted to the
competition in 2002 (which was subsequently awarded first prize
in the competition) and in the adopted Decree on the Location
Plan. The basic idea lies in the layering of two storeys by
displacing their floor plan - the elementary square of the floor
plan is moved around the vertical core thus creating overhangs on
which terraces are placed. The vertical line of the residential
tower is cut up and transformed into horizontal layering,
providing the tower with the necessary dynamics. The common
vertical building height with a ground floor and ten storeys also
includes a gallery on the ground floor, while the 10th floor
houses duplex flats. The ground floor and gallery are intended for
public use, for various service providers and office activities, and
for grocery stores and other shops, while the upper floors are
intended as flats.

The fountain lies on red asphalt in the centre of the square. The
surrounding mountains and the river generate the shape, placing
and waterflow over it. It measures 9m in length, 3.75m in width
and it is 1.75m high. It is formed by two binding concrete shells.
Water is sprayed on it from a nearby waterspout. It flows over the
concave surface, looses its power and drifts over the convex
surface into the gutter. The water creates diffraction and
reflection of light. The sound of water is constantly present. The
water covered surface twinkles before your eyes. The landscaper
assigns landscape characteristics to the scale of an autonomous
object. The fountain waterflow is much alike the river flow over
similar relief - the landscape. The landscaper simulates activities
of the visitors in the manner of the surrounding nature. You can
sit on the fountain brim. You can lean on the wet surface of the
fountain to soak your back. During rain showers you can hide
beneath it.
