On May 20, 1861, during the Civil War, the Confederate Congress resolved to move the capital of the Confederacy from
Montgomery, Ala., to Richmond, Va. North Carolina voted to
secede from the Union. Kentucky declared its neutrality.
Boy Scout Troop 101 Paper Drive
Residents are asked to leave their newspapers curbside tomorrow
morning. Troop 101 will begin collecting at 9:00 a.m.
Dumpster’s Available for Flood Clean-Up
The Massac ESDA office along with the help of Honeywell
Corp. of Metropolis has made available to the residents of Massac County including the areas of Joppa, Brookport, Metropolis
some dumpster’s to collect household waste from the flood and
general clean-up. The dumpster’s are located on North Avenue
near the river in Joppa, on Faughn Lane and Hwy 45 near Metropolis, at the Massac County Fire Department on North Avenue near Metropolis and in Brookport at 5th Street and Pell
Road. We are asking the public to be sure all items be put into
the dumpster’s and not left on the ground. Any questions can be
directed to the Massac ESDA office at 524-2002.

Metropolis Police Department News Release
The following information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis
of probable cause and all Arrestees are presumed innocent until
proven guilty.
Order of Protection Violation
Charles W. Stewart, 48, of Metropolis, was arrested by Metropolis Police during the early morning hours of 05-18-11. Officers
responded to a home in the 1000 block of East 6th street at
3:31am after the resident reported that her estranged husband had
entered the home.
Stewart was charged with violation of an order of protection, unlawful restraint and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.
He was jailed at the Massac County Detention Center.
Failure to Appear
Metropolis Police arrested a Tunnel Hill woman on 05-18-11 at
2:14am at the intersection of 12th and Coburn Streets. Ruby Victoria Purnell, 21, was driving a car stopped in connection with the
investigation of an alleged domestic disturbance in Brookport. A
computer check revealed that Purnell had an active arrest warrant
in Pulaski County for failure to appear on an original charge of
possession of drug paraphernalia. She was jailed in lieu of $100
cash bond.
New Date Announced for Relay for Life
The Relay For Life of Massac County was scheduled to be held
at Fort Massac State Park on Saturday, May 21 at 5 p.m. until
Sunday, May 22, 6:00 a.m. A new date and time has been scheduled for Friday, July 22 at 6:00 p.m. until Saturday, July 23 at
6:00 a.m. at Fort Massac State Park.
Additionally, the Relay's Bank Night has been rescheduled for
Thursday, July 14 at 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at City National Bank,
Main Branch in Metropolis.
