Answer the call to give old
electronics a new life and help
preserve our precious planet.

Every time we turn around there’s a new
gadget that’s faster and cooler than the
last one.
So what happens to our tech when
we’re not using it anymore? It doesn’t
seem right to just trash it or stash it in a
drawer. And we shouldn’t. Just because
they are out of use doesn’t mean they
are worthless. They are filled with
fascinating and reusable materials like
plastics, rare earth metals and precious
metals which can be recycled through
a process we call urban mining.
Urban mining is the process of extracting
these precious metals and rare earth
metals from recycled electronics without
mining in ecologically sensitive areas.
Not only is it better for the environment,
but in some cases it’s actually more
efficient than traditional mining.
Consider this: one tonne of rercycled
smartphones yields 324 times more
gold than the same weight in ore from a
traditional mine. The Earth is reaching out
for your help. Will you answer the call?

Who are we?
Recycle Your Electronics, operated by
Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES)
is your go-to resource for electronics
recycling. We’re here to help you recycle
your end-of-life electronic products,
and provide educational resources.
About Ontario Electronic Stewardship
OES prevents old electronics from
being illegally exported or handled by
irresponsible recyclers.
OES helps recover valuable resources
that can be put back into the manufacturing
supply chain. Technology advances fast,
but we only get one earth.
The future is in your hands.
Don’t let it go to waste.

Q: What is Ontario Electronic Stewardship
(OES)?
A: O
ntario Electronic Stewardship (OES) is a not for-profit
industry-led organization that oversees a governmentapproved end-of-life electronics recycling program
throughout the province. Residents and businesses can
drop off their unwanted electronics free of charge for
responsible recycling at an OES collection site. Visit
www.RecycleYourElectronics.ca to find a collection site.

What can I recycle?
Q: Why are the EHF's reviewed?
A: W
ith the success of the OES program and the operating
efficiencies achieved. OES is pleased to reflect cost
savings in lower EHFs to consumers this year. Fees
are set on an annual basis and is determined by a Cost
Recovery Methodology as stipulated by the Ministry of the
Environment and Climate Change. This model takes into
account actual costs to collect, transport and recycle. It
also ensures costs are managed by material category and
accounts for the management of obsolete WEEE, such as
costly leaded CRT glass.
Q: What is the EHF and why is it charged?
Q: Why are there surpluses in the electronics
recycling programs?
A: Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs) are charged on
A: A surplus (contingency reserve) is part of the fee setting
the sale and distribution of all new electronic products
regulated in the province. The EHF is not a tax, nor is
it a refundable deposit and it is not determined by the
government. The EHFs that are collected at the time of
purchase and remitted to Ontario Electronic Stewardship
(OES) are designated solely to cover the collecting,
transporting, responsibly recycling items at the end of
their useful life, the accompanying costs of program
management and promotion and education. All for the
purpose of ensuring end of life electronics do not end
up in landfill.
Q: Why are EHF’s important?
A: By responsibly recycling end-of-life electronics through the
OES program, we are helping to:
•Reduce the amount of electronics that end up in
landfills and prevent them from being illegally exported.
•Help protect the health and safety of the workers
processing the electronics.
•Conserve natural resources by recovering raw materials
that can be used to make new products.
Together we can ensure the enjoyment of electronics
today comes with the responsibility of properly recycling
them for a cleaner tomorrow.

cost recovery model and is a requirement by the Ministry
of the Environment and Climate Change. Sufficient
reserves are required to handle orphan products,
downturns in the economy or spikes in recycling costs; all
examples that draw on a necessary reserve.
As a not-for-profit organization, once all costs are covered
and the required contingency reserve is realized, OES is
able to reflect cost savings in a reduction in the EHF to the
consumer. At this time we are pleased to be able to pass
along a reduction in the EHF to the consumer to reflect
these cost savings.
Q: If I return my unwanted computer, how do
I know my personal information will not be
seen or stolen?
A: Consumers and businesses are responsible for ensuring
that all personal data is removed from their electronic
devices prior to bringing them to one of our OES collection
sites. If you are unsure how to do this, contact your
manufacturer for more information. While OES requires
that all of our recyclers protect data on electronic products
from unauthorized access or theft, it is your obligation to
protect your personal information. OES does not accept
liability for data or any other digital content that is left on
electronic products at our OES collection sites.
