CYO ‐ Our parish’s Catholic Youth Organization has hundreds of
children participating in sports throughout the year. Each child
has the opportunity to grow in character, ability, and community
while honoring oneself, teammates, officials, and church. Thank
you to the coaches, parents, and especially our athletes for giving
one hundred percent. Have a great season!

My Sisters and Brothers,
“Who is the greatest?” I suppose most of us don’t go
around having that conversation or asking that question about
ourselves, at least verbally or on the outside. However, I wonder if we have more subtle ways of trying to prove who the
greatest might be. Often it may be through attempts to be
powerful, well thought of or acknowledged, materially
blessed with the things “status” is ordinarily defined by, or
just by title, privilege or entitlement. Perhaps to some degree
all of us may be guilty of defining “greatness” in worldly
ways. Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the
last of all and the servant of all”. He used a child to demonstrate His point, that greatness is not defined by power, control or prestige, but rather by selfless service and unconditional love. I think we should strive to be “the greatest” -in God’s
eyes and not the eyes of the world.
Some of the greatest people I know are our catechists, those
who hand on the faith in our various faith formation programs
and ministries. Today, the third Sunday in September, is Catechetical Sunday in the United States. This weekend we
acknowledge and offer our gratitude to all our catechists, assistants, administrators, and all who have any part in the
many ways we teach and help form disciples for the Lord,
from our smallest children to our oldest adults. Faith formation is meant to be life long - from cradle to grave - and
involves all of us. But, some have the particular call to use
their gifts in our various faith formation programs and ministries, and today we offer them our support and cooperation.
Forming disciples is the work of the entire Church. Your
prayers, example, and witness affect others more than any of
us could ever measure. Let us continue to work together and
allow the Lord to work through us to make His Gospel a living reality among us. Thanks to all our catechists. You are the
greatest.
We are very blessed to welcome Mike Patin, a nationally
known “faith horticulturist” (his words not ours) from Lafayette, Louisiana, to be with us for a couple days to speak with
and inspire our catechists, our Confirmation candidates, and
Crossings youth, and to lead our school retreat on Monday.
Mike is a great storyteller who uses humor and passion to
remind people of God’s presence among us, while inviting
others (and himself) to take the “next step” in our journey
with God. Pray that God will use Mike as a servant and an
instrument for enlivening and renewing the faith of all those
he ministers to in our community. We are blessed to have him
with us.
After months and months of planning, next weekend we finally commence our “Jubilee Year”, celebrating fifty years as
a parish community. This is a time for us to give thanks, to
celebrate, to remember, and to look to our future. There are
many wonderful events planned for our Jubilee Year which
culminates on July 10th, 2016 with our 50th anniversary Mass
with Bishop Lennon. I urge you to participate, promote, and
invite others to share in the joy of this special year of grace
and mercy that we are blessed to have, beginning with special activities after each Mass next weekend. The bulletin has
and will have all the information of what is going on. The
most important piece that will make this Jubilee Year so special is YOU. Together, as family, we REDISCOV ER yesterday * RENEW today * RE-EVANGELIZE tomorrow. Let this
truly be a “year of favor” for the Lord.
One of the events that will take place during our Jubilee Year
is the Paul Todd concert to benefit our Food Pantry on Monday, October 12th, at 7:00 pm in the Pahler Center. Talk to
anyone who has ever experienced the musical genius of Paul
Todd and his son and you will undoubtedly be moved to
come and experience this amazing evening of musical performance. Paul plays six keyboards simultaneously, sings
absolutely beautifully, while his son, Paul Jr. sings and plays
the drums. As fantastic of a concert as this promises to be,
what is far more important, is that this evening can greatly
benefit our own Food Pantry and its growing needs. Tickets
are free and can be picked up at the parish office. All that we
ask is that each person coming would make a free will offering for the Food Pantry. Tickets are limited and we can only
accommodate 400 people in the Pahler Center, so come and
get your tickets soon. For those who may be interested, we
invite you to join us for a patron “meet and greet” with Paul
Todd that evening prior to the concert at 5:00 pm in the
MPR, where food and refreshments will be served and there
will be time to interact with Paul and his son. To register for
the special pre-concert event, RSVP to Bob or Jeanette
Zames (440-357-6692). Thank you so much for your very
generous support. Are you aware that in any given month our
Food Pantry provides for more than 30,000 meals for people
in Lake County? What great work. Please help us help those
who are hungry and in need.
The other organization that helps people in our area so much
is our St. Vincent de Paul Society. I just want to remind you
of the Annual Walk for the Poor this coming Saturday, September 26th, at 9:00 am at Concord Woods. Our community
is invited to walk and especially pledge to this life changing
organization. All proceeds go directly to our St. Vincent de
Paul Conference, so please indicate our conference when
making a pledge at www.svdpusa.net/pledgathon/public/
index.php. Thank you so much for your ongoing support.
Have a great week. Strive for real greatness. Be a servant.
God will continue to bless you. Peace be with you.
In God’s love,

SAVE THE DATE – WOMEN’S RETREAT
Our annual Season in Faith Women’s Retreat at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma
will be on October 16, 17 & 18 of this
year. Ladies, mark this date on your calendars now and plan to spend a beautiful
weekend away refreshing your spirit and
getting spiritually rejuvenated. The 57
acres of forest, meadow and pathways at the Jesuit Retreat
House are the perfect setting for allowing God’s Spirit to
fill your heart with life and grace.
CORNER
This weekend, on September 20, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Catechetical
Sunday. While we take this opportunity to commission all of those in our parish who have volunteered for our many catechetical programs, we must remember that it is the duty of every Catholic,
through the virtue of their baptism, to hand down our faith. The theme for this year’s celebration
is “Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person.” This theme reminds us that the dignity of
each human person rests in the biblical teaching (Gen 1:26-27) that he or she is made in God’s
image and likeness. It also reminds us that we the baptized may need to actively support and protect others from all sorts of harm, cherishing human life from the moment of conception to a natural death. Remember to keep our catechists, and all our baptized Catholics, in our prayers this weekend as they begin
another year of important work teaching our faith.

This week we also welcome our Holy Father, Pope Francis to the United States as he embarks upon an
exciting and historic week visiting our nation’s capital where he will address our country’s leaders; New
York where he will address the United Nations and in Philadelphia where he will participate in the
Church’s World Meeting of Families. Please keep him in your prayers. For a full schedule of the
Pope’s activities while in the United States, please see: http://www.usccb.org/about/leadership/holy-see/

Music Notes …
Cultivating peace. This weekend's readings seem to speak
to so many of our world's issues and problems like war.
And to the issues among us in our daily lives like arguments and conflicts. But Jesus cuts to the chase. Stop focusing on yourself and focus on others. Be a servant. Elevate others. Find peace. "What do you want of me, Lord?
Where do you want me to serve you?" From "Servant
Song."

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome …
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome sounds serious right?! The
more common name is shin splints and most athletes have
experienced this syndrome at one time or another. It is
perceived as pain on the tibia, shin bone, and is classified
an overuse injury. This inflammation and pain can occur
in beginners, weekend warriors or even the highly conditioned athlete when there is a change in their training regimen such as increasing distance, intensity or even the
surface they train upon. Other contributing factors can be
improper footwear, being flat footed, weak lower leg
musculature and poor running mechanics. Symptoms can
be managed by rest, stretching, icing the shins 3-4 times a
day and using anti-inflammatory medications if not contraindicated. Prevention is another key component. If running shoes have excessive mileage on them, purchase new
ones appropriate for your athletic activity. Have your
stride and feet evaluated by a physical therapist to determine if orthotics for shoes or changes in your gait may
decrease your risk of developing shin splints. Simply
“running through the pain” is not a way to manage shin
splints and may in fact worsen and prolong the problem.
Here’s to our health!
