So No One Goes
Hungry
2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT
1 in 20 are hungry
There is nothing worse than having to make the choice between
feeding your kids or paying the rent. No one should have to make
that choice.

Food Assistance in Waterloo Region
Moving from Good to Great
W
hat motivates our Board of
Directors and staff to improve
programs and increase access
to food - to move from ‘good’ to ‘great’?
Often it is stories of perseverance, like
John’s struggle to provide for his children,
which inspire us.
John, a single father, lost his
manufacturing job in 2009 and is still
struggling to piece together a consistent,
living wage. After his marriage ended,
John became homeless, relying on the
support of agencies like St. John’s Kitchen,
Ray of Hope and Out of the Cold. He
heads to work each day, a part-time
contract labour position, nourished by the
generosity of a great community.
Every other weekend, John spends
time with his children. He has saved
enough money to rent a hotel room
with kitchenette, giving his children a
sense of “home” during their visit. On
Monday he goes back to life on the street
and continues to put the pieces of a
life shattered by a poor economy, lack
of education and low self-esteem, back
together.
When John gets to a community meal
program on Monday evening, he has
a smile on his face. He has been able
to spend time with his children. He is
greeted by the welcoming voices of
community volunteers and is nourished
by a meal prepared with food that has
been provided by The Food Bank. He has
hope that the pieces will come together
and that he will find full-time work soon
and rebuild his life.
John’s story is a demonstration of the
collaborative spirit of Waterloo Region:
multiple services and organizations
working together to meet the basic needs
of families and individuals. It is that spirit
that drives us to develop new programs

ANNUAL REPORT 2011 - 2012 t 7
Volunteers Are Moving Us Forward
The commitment of our volunteers is essential to The Food Bank
achieving its mission. In 2011, 2178 volunteers donated 23,411 hours
of service. They delivered educational experiences for youth; assisted
food donors and member agencies; planned special events; kept
the warehouse clean and orderly; sorted hundreds of bins of food
donations; picked up thousands of pounds of donations from the
community and represented The Food Bank at many events in the
community.
We strive to create a positive environment, provide consistency and
support to our volunteers. Our priorities in the next year include:
Leveraging unique opportunities in the community
Providing professional development to assist staff in working with
our volunteers
Developing a comprehensive approach to recruitment and
engagement of volunteers
Involving volunteers in leadership positions within our organization
I think that volunteering unifies the
world; we’re recognizing that we are
all members of one community, and
that we support each other in times
of need.

Canstruction
Dig In
Golf
On Saturday March 10th, 120 Canstruction
builders came to Conestoga Mall prepared for
the question “Will you buy me a meal”. Their
meal is not served on a silver platter, it is in
a space ship ready to blast off to eliminate
hunger, it is in a lighthouse symbolizing hope
and direction for the lost and it is hidden
in the nest being protected by angry birds.
These Canstruction builders brought enough
food to the mall to provide for 25,000 meals!
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region,
Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, Woolwich
Community Services and Wilmot Family
Resource Centre worked together to ensure
no neighbour goes hungry. In total, 35 sites
with groups of friends, schoolmates, sports
teams and work colleagues volunteered their
time to raise 52,839 lbs. of much needed food
in one day. This food plus financial donations
meant the community’s support helped
provide more than 74,000 meals. Dig In
provided a great lead-in to Hunger Awareness
Week which shared information about hunger
via blogs and social media.
“The 2012 tournament was a success thanks
to generous sponsors, golfers and volunteers,”
commented Tasos Stathopoulos, chair of
the volunteer tournament committee. Since
2005, more than $240,000 has been raised,
providing food for more than 12,000 families
in the Region. In addition to an enjoyable day
on and off the golf course, the participants
learn first-hand about how the tournament
proceeds help the community. This year was
no exception as illustrated through the words
of guest speaker John Neufeld, Executive
Director of the House of Friendship, a member
organization of The Food Bank, who reminded
us we all sit at the same table, sometimes in
different chairs.
Canstruction 2012 raised:
25,973 lbs of food
$25,073 including sponsorships
Remarkable public praise

Delivering Hope
More than Food
Our efforts locally to inform our community about hunger through
social media, tours of our facility, corporate engagement activities,
speaking opportunities and development of educational programs
have been well received. 1787 have toured The Food Bank and 1908
have been present at Food Bank speaking engagements. Over
400 senior elementary students participated in the pilot phase of a
new educational activity called ‘Hungry?’ funded in part through a
Libro Community Builder Grant. The community has responded in
their own innovative ways such as the Iron Chef competition and
the Bottles for Beans initiative to continue the conversation about
hunger.
The Food Sort Challenge creates
a terrific atmosphere with
competitive camaraderie between
the two Manulife teams. It helps
us gain a better understanding
of the magnitude of what The
Food Bank does. We received a
lot of positive feedback from our
employees who participated for
the volunteer and team building
opportunities this event provides.
Judy Blasutti, Manager of Community Affairs,
Manulife Financial
It is hard to know the problems that will
come and how to face them. No matter what
income you have you can still face problems
that leave you with little or no money.

Working Together = Feeding more People
In addition to acquiring and distributing food within Waterloo Region,
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region provides a collaborative food
acquisition and distribution program in Southwestern Ontario. Last
year we distributed over 1.3 million pounds of food to food banks in
Southwestern Ontario. This program provides our food programs as well
as the food banks we serve in Southwestern Ontario with access to a
variety of food not available otherwise.
The Food Bank is pleased to have staff participate on the board and on
committees of the OAFB and Food Banks Canada. This past June we
were honoured to assist with the professional development of food
banks across Ontario as host of the 2012 OAFB member conference.
The conference was attended by food bank leaders from across Canada.
What a thrill to be able to share the innovative, collaborative spirit of our
community with our peers!

I have been blessed by having enough to eat all of my life. That blessing is
doubled when I am able to share with others who have not.

We are proud to support the community
with our Empty Bowls event. The hope
is that each time the empty bowl is
taken from the cupboard at home, it
will serve as a reminder that someone
else’s bowl was empty and that on
this occasion, patrons helped alleviate
hunger in our community.

Continuing to Feed
Moving from Good to Great
Meeting basic needs of families and individuals is the core of our daily
operations, but behind the scenes, Food Bank staff & volunteers are
working on projects & responding to industry changes, economic
challenges & public health indicators. Having an understanding of the
external environment and responding to changing trends is essential to
continuing the work we do...so no one goes hungry.
Currently underway are renovations to our facility at 50 Alpine Court to
expand the capacity of our freezer & cooler to allow for the development
of new programs & service delivery models that will increase the
nutritional value/content of food hampers & community meals. In
addition to being able to provide more fresh produce/products, the Food
Assistance Network will be collaborating on projects that will support
increased client acceptance & use of these foods. Through the creation of
recipe books, information sheets and connections to community cooking
& nutrition programs we are part of a broader community initiative to
improve overall health & well-being.
