Today’s Gospel Reflection: John 20:19-31
BELIEVING
N
ew birth, new life, good news! These themes run throughout today’s scripture readings. The first
reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the joyful early days of the newly born church,
when members devoted themselves to instruction, the communal life, the breaking of bread, and the
prayers. The passage from Peter’s first letter echoes that joy, and assures those who now believe
though they never saw Jesus that their faith will lead to their salvation.
But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us to sober reality. Not everyone can believe so
easily. Even an apostle can doubt this astonishing news of the Resurrection. Across the centuries, Jesus
reaches forward to touch us today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Today’s second collection is for St. Maria Goretti Community Outreach Fund
HISTORY OF THE DIVINE MERCY
On February 22nd 1931, Jesus appeared to a young
Polish nun, Sr. Faustina Kowalska. He was dressed in
a white garment and had one hand raised in blessing
and the other at His breast. From His chest flowed
rays, one in red and the others in light shades.
He asked Sr. Faustina to reproduce the image of Him
just as she saw it with the words “Jesus I Trust in
You” to be written below His feet. He asked her to
display the image in her own convent chapel and then
throughout the whole world. Sr. Faustina's Spiritual
Director told her to ask Jesus the significance of the
two rays and Jesus explained:
“The rays represent the Blood and Water that gushed forth from
the depths of my Mercy when my Agonizing Heart was pierced
on the cross. The pale rays symbolize the water, which cleanses
and purifies the soul. These rays will shield the soul before the
justice of My Father. Fortunate are those who live in this shelter, for the justice of God will not reach them there.”
The Feast of Divine Mercy, celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the
Sunday after Easter Sunday), is a relatively new addition to the Roman
Catholic liturgical calendar.
Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ
Himself to Saint María Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to
the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the
day that he canonized Saint Faustina.

A
ndrew was born with mild Down Syndrome. He loved to go to religion
class on Sunday. His classmates mostly ignored him. On the Sunday
after Easter the teacher gave out plastic eggs, one to each child, and they
went outside to find symbols of new life to put in the eggs.
Back indoors the teacher opened the first egg:
there was a beautiful flower. In the second was a butterfly and
in the third a green leaf. The fourth was empty.
The children said, “Somebody did it wrong.”
“It’s mine,” Andrew said. “I did do it right! The tomb is empty!”
There was sudden silence. From that time on, Andrew became a part of the
group, set free from the tomb of his difference.
Andrew died last summer. During his funeral Mass, nine eight-year
old children, together with their teacher, marched up to the altar, not with
flowers to cover over the stark reality of death, but with an empty, old pantyhose egg, and placed it on the altar steps. The tomb is empty!

OUR PARISH HONORS MARY, OUR LADY,
DURING THE MONTH OF MAY
Ever since the days of the Early Church, Mary has been held
in high esteem. The Early Church revered her in the company of the apostles. Soon after, the Church declared her to
be the “Theotokos,” the God-bearer. Over the ages, saints
have invoked her, theologians have speculated about her
and ordinary people have prayed for her intercession. Why is
there such great devotion to Mary, and why do we see her depicted in so
many different forms of art?
Mary is, first and always, the great disciple, the person who chose
to say “yes” to God’s invitation to grace and holiness. With love she became
the mother of God, bearing the incarnation in her body and in her life. She,
too, took up the cross, standing beneath her rejected and reviled son as he
died. Mary, as the mother of the Church, is the sign of our own discipleship.
She encourages all of us to respond humanly to God’s presence and grace in
our lives. She is the model by which we must continue to enflesh the Word in
all that we say and do.
Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, Mary has been
depicted in a myriad of art forms. Just look around our own church of St.
Maria Goretti. How many different images of Mary can you find? (Hint: there
are at least seven!) All of these images serve to remind us that we are called
to emulate her steadfast faith, protect the weak, defend the poor and comfort
the sick and dying. Her image represents all that the Church hopes to be.
The month of May has traditionally been the month that the Church
honors Mary in even a more particular way. During each week of May the
different cultural communities of St. Maria Goretti will invite the entire parish to
honor Mary. Watch each week as a different image of Mary, Our Lady, is
prominently placed within the church for all of us to pray before.

dawn and spring.
The feast of the Resurrection of Christ derives its name
from Eastre, the goddess of Spring, according to St. Bede
the Venerable, but others think that the term comes from a
misunderstanding of Hebdomada Alba ("White Weeks")
when alba ("white") was mistranslated into the High German word for dawn,
when the risen Lord was seen by the holy women. In any event, this festival is
the high point of the Christian year, as it celebrates the central mystery of
Christ: His triumph over death and the cross in His resurrection, which in the
Synoptic Gospels is associated with the Jewish Passover.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

“Mystagogy”
ne of the great Easter traditions is “mystagogy,” an ancient word meaning
“reflection on the mysteries.” It is a style of catechesis, or passing on the
faith. People who have shared an experience, in this case those who have
been baptized at Easter, are urged to recall their experience, reflect on its
meaning, and apply their insights to their new way of life.
There is an aspect of an experience that is simply not available until
you’ve had it. For example, you may think you know weddings inside out;
you’ve been to dozens, seen hundreds in the movies or on television, but until
you’ve said “I do” to another, there is a certain knowledge unavailable to you.
Those who go down into the waters of Baptism as adults have similar experiences; they have all taken baths before, but not like this one! Mystagogy helps
such persons to uncover the deep meaning of the experience, their sense of a
new beginning, of God’s abundant love, of forgiveness, of community.
It takes time for the power of the Easter Vigil to work its wonders for us.
Those who are newly baptized are called “neophytes,” meaning “newly
planted.” The tender buds of spring need care and nurturing, and our new
brothers and sisters need your prayer and your faithful example.

FELICES LOS QUE CREEN
¡Nuevo renacer, nueva vida, buenas noticias! Estos temas relucen en las lecturas bíblicas de hoy. La primera lectura
de los Hechos de los Apóstoles describe los primeros días de júbilo de la Iglesia recién nacida cuando los miembros
se dedicaban a la enseñanza, la vida en común, la fracción del pan y las oraciones. El pasaje de la primera carta de
Pedro refleja esa alegría de la nueva vida y asegura a los nuevos creyentes que no conocieron a Jesús, que su fe los
llevará a la salvación.
Pero entre esa alegría, la lectura del Evangelio nos hace volver a la realidad. No todos pueden creer tan fácilmente. Hasta un apóstol puede dudar de estas noticias extraordinarias de la Resurrección. Durante dos milenios

Divina Misericordia
L
a Iglesia Católica es universal, extendida en diversas
naciones y culturas. A través de los siglos estas culturas han enriquecido la Tradición de la Iglesia con muchas
tradiciones y devociones que van más allá de su cultura de
origen. La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia es un buen ejemplo. Viene de una devoción que nació en Polonia con la
Hermana Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) canonizada en el
2000.
La devoción a la Divina Misericordia se celebra el segundo
domingo de Pascua y durante todo el año orando la Coronilla de la Divina
Misericordia. En Latinoamérica se ha ido extendiendo esta devoción desde 1978 cuando fue aprobada por el Papa Paulo VI. En todas partes se
puede encontrar la imagen de la Divina Misericordia, Jesús de pie con
rayos rojos y blanco-azules que brillan desde su corazón hacia el mundo.
Lleva el lema: “Jesús mío, en voz confío”.
La finalidad de esta devoción es recordar al pecador que la
misericordia de Dios es infinita e inagotable. Es una misericordia que
debemos imitar para que la paz pueda reinar en nuestros corazones y en

NUESTRA PARROQUIA HONRA
A MARIA, NUESTRA MADRE,
EN EL MES DE MAYO
La Coronación es una forma de reverencia frecuentemente mostrada en las imágenes de la Santísima Virgen
María. Es especialmente desde el final del siglo XVI
que en Occidente la práctica se extendió a los fieles,
religiosos y laicos, el coronar a la Santísima Virgen.
Los papas no sólo aprobaron esta costumbre piadosa, sino que “en
muchas ocasiones, ya sea personalmente o a través de obispos delegados, llevaron a cabo la coronación de las imágenes marianas”.
En el siglo XIX un rito fue escrito para coronar las imágenes
de María. Nuevos ritos fueron aprobados por la Congregación para los
Sacramentos y el Culto Divino en Roma del 25 de marzo de 1981. La
traducción al inglés fue aprobada por el Comité Administrativo de la
Conferencia Nacional de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos el
24 de marzo de 1987 y confirmada por ad interim por la Sede Apostólica por decreto de la Congregación para el Culto Divino el 22 de mayo de 1987.
El mes de mayo ha sido tradicionalmente el mes en el que la
Iglesia honra a la Virgen María en una manera muy particular. Durante
cada semana del mes de mayo las diferentes culturas de nuestra parroquia invitan a todos los feligreses a honrarla. Cada semana publicaremos un artículo referente a la Virgen María.

ndrés nació afectado ligeramente por el síndrome de Down. Le encantaba ir los domingos a las clases de religión. Sus compañeros de clase
casi siempre lo ignoraban. El domingo después de Pascua la
maestra repartió unos huevos plásticos, uno para cada niño, para
que encontraran afuera símbolos de vida nueva y lo pusieran en el
huevo. Cuando volvieron adentro la maestra abrió el primer huevo
que tenía una flor bella. El segundo huevo tenía una mariposa y el
tercero una hoja linda y verde. El cuarto huevo estaba vació. Los niños comenzaron a decir: “Alguien lo hizo mal”. “Es el mío”, dijo Andrés. “¡Yo lo hice
bien! ¡La tumba está vacía!” De pronto cundió un gran silencio. Desde ese
momento Andrés empezó a ser parte del grupo. Había salido de la tumba
donde lo habían puesto por ser diferente. Andrés murió el verano pasado. En
la Misa de sus exequias nueve niños de ocho años junto a su maestra fueron
al altar, no con flores que cubrieran la crudeza de la muerte, sino cada uno
con un huevo plástico y vacío que colocaron en los escalones de la sede.

proviene del griego πάσχα (pasja), una adaptación del hebreo ‫פסח‬
(pésaj), que significa ‘paso’. La Pascua, también llamada Pascua
Florida, Domingo de Pascua, Domingo de Resurrección o Domingo
de Gloria es la fiesta central del cristianismo, en la que se conmemora la resurrección de Jesús al tercer día después de haber sido crucificado.
