LETTER
FROM THE FRANKLIN COUNTY
WELCOME CENTER
Adventure seekers and History buffs will be fascinated with
Franklin County’s versatility. Step back in time to experience
what life on the canal was like in the Nineteenth century. Ride
the Ben Franklin III horse drawn canal boat as the early settlers
did long ago. Hear the firing of cannons or witness one of
Abraham Lincoln’s famous speeches during one of
Metamora’s re-enactments.
Hike the same trails or take a canoe down the same Whitewater
River the pioneers did when they discovered Brookville. Listen
for the call of the wolves and discover arrowheads during the
Annual Native American Gathering.

BROOKVILLE
Brookville is home to the
beautiful Brookville Lake and
the amazing Whitewater River.
The water recreation options are nearly endless with award
winning fishing, boating, canoeing, skiing, and swimming
at the beach or pool side. Not to mention horseback riding,
hiking, golfing, zip lining and so much more.
Looking for something indoors? That perfect gift or just a little
something to take home could be in one of Brookville’s quaint
shops that support local artisans,
antiques and more.
Franklin County is known for one of the
largest Antique tractor shows. Vendors
and artisans will take you back in time
demonstrating the history and talent of
making brooms, weaving, pottery, horse
milled sorghum, running a saw mill and
harvesting a field during the 4 day show.
This is an event you will not want to miss.
In 2010 CanoeFest made plans to celebrate the
Chicken Trail, the Great Chicken Fry off and
the possibility of breaking the Guinness Book
of World Records for the largest serving of fried
chicken. They obtained the record by filling a
new Canoe with 1645 pounds of fried chicken.
How many chickens can you spot?

Escape to the past and
experience what it was
like in the 1800’s.
Visit the gristmill and
pick up a bag of their
freshly stone-ground
cornmeal or grab a sweet
treat at one of the
specialty shops.
Trains, boats, horses and ducks line the streets and offer
visitors an opportunity to experience Metamora.
Take a horse drawn canal boat through the only wooden
covered bridge Aqueduct still working in North America.
Stop by the Grist Mill, powered by waters of the canal and purchase
authentic stone ground corn meal. Explore the many canal shops and
attractions to discover interesting art and crafts. Listen to live music or take
an adventure through the Museum of Oddities.
The Whitewater Valley Railroad offers weekend
excursions from Connersville to Metamora on
vintage coaches and cabooses.
Walk or bike the Whitewater Canal
Trail to the unique Twin Locks.
Enjoy the freshly made fudge,
coffee or homemade dinners at the
local restaurants. You never know
when a jam session will break out
so sit down and enjoy the scenery
of Historic Metamora.
History abounds in Metamora, Indiana. This
scenic small town has the only working wooden
aqueduct in America. Grab a cup of coffee and
some homemade fudge while strolling the streets
and shops. Mine for precious gems or go
horseback riding nearby.

BROOKVILLE OLDENBURG METAMORA
OLDENBURG
A small town known as the
‘Village of Spires’ noting
it’s towering churches was
found in the late 1830’s by
German Settlers.
This small German Catholic town, which was placed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1983, has abundent architectural history. Stop by and
grab a self guided tour “A Walk Through Historic Oldenburg” as the town will
take you back to the 1800’s when it was first settled.
Call ahead and make a reservation to tour the main building of the Sisters of
St. Francis Convent and even go on a small scavenger hunt for hidden images
throughout the buildings. Take a bike ride or a leisure drive, grab the Vatican
Ride Brochure and venture out to experience the nine Catholic churches in
Franklin County. Stop by the Village Store for their homemade sausage.
In July come by for the famous
“Freudenfest” which means
Festival of Fun as a 2 day
celebration breaks out in the
streets. Music and German Beer is
always available along with great
food at the locally owned and
operated restaurants. Stop by the
Creche Shop, the Schwestern Art
Gallery, or the local antique store
all within walking distance.
So come, enjoy the scenery and
experience what Oldenburg is
all about.
The painting of the hydrants started in 1976
during the Bicentennial. At first they were all
painted as historic founders such as George
Washington, and Ben Franklin. Over time they
have faded and are now replaced with important
Oldenburg figures such as Father Franz Joseph
Rudolf and Tinsmith Caspar Gaupel. Do you see
anyone you might know?
