NEW LIVE-INS NEEDED FOR SACTUARY OF HOPE PRAYER AND RETREAT CENTER
New Live-ins Needed
At Sanctuary of Hope Prayer and Retreat Center
Kansas City, Kansas
July 3, 2013
Sanctuary of Hope Prayer and Retreat Center (SOH) is seeking new live-in members. We need
members who can give an average of 35 hours a week; but can be more depending on the number of
guests we have at SOH. It would be good to have some formational and educational background in
spirituality and really want to work and live at a prayer and retreat center, located in the heart of the city.
Candidates should be willing to make a commitment to the regular prayer life of SOH, includes
morning and evening prayer, and expect to welcome and serve our guests with basic hospitality. Work
in cleaning areas inside and outside of the building is included.
Free room, board, and utilities offered in exchange for your labors of love, faith and hospitality. No
salary offered at this time, but living with a wonderful community of staff and guests is reward in itself.
It would be possible to seek a grant to help with a salary in the future.
For further information and/or an application for being a live-in member contact Fr. Dennis Wait,
Spiritual Director, at SOH, at 913-321-4673, business hours 8 AM-4PM, Tuesday-Friday, or
email [email protected] Three letters of reference requested with each application.
Thanks for taking time to pray and consider this request!
Peace and God bless you, Fr. Dennis Wait, Spiritual Director

CATHOLIC CHARITIES MAILING
Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, working in cooperation with the Archdiocesan Stewardship
and Development Office, has been granted permission by Archbishop Naumann to send the
attached letter to all registered households in the diocese. This mailing will go out during the week
of July 15th and will be arriving in household mail boxes over the following two weeks. The letter
seeks supports for Catholic Charities expanding mobile support services to the 21-counties and
their growing emergency assistance centers, including new work in Topeka, Emporia and
Atchison. We wanted you to be aware of this initiative in the event that you receive questions or
feedback from parishioners. Question can be directed to either Jan Lewis, President/CEO, or to
Ernie Boehner, Director of Catholic Action, at the organization’s main switchboard number:
913-433-2100.

Dear First Name(s),
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a
field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32
Like the mighty bush that grew from the smallest of seeds, so our Catholic Church, sown by the
love of Jesus Christ, has grown from a handful of disciples to over a billion followers around the
world. Here in our corner of Kansas, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas is an integral part of
the Church’s mission to welcome and embrace those in need who, like the “birds of the sky” seek
shelter in our branches.
We open the door of seven emergency assistance centers, a men’s homeless shelter and a traveling
resource bus that serves the 21 counties of the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas. The most
basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter are provided to individuals and families, your
neighbors, who have found themselves in a situation of want. People like Ben* who shared:
“As a man, as a father of three children, it’s hard not being able to take care of your family. This program is
a hand up. When you come here for help, you don’t know what’s up or down. Catholic Charities is here to
show you the ladder.” Back on their feet, Ben’s family quickly became in-kind donors to
Catholic Charities, giving pots, pans, small kitchen appliances and children’s clothing to help
others in need. Their philosophy: “Pay it forward. Every little bit helps.”
You are part of this mission too and your financial support, engagement and prayers are vital as
we work to keep pace with the ever increasing needs in our Northeast Kansas communities. Just
as one small seed can grow into something great . . . your gift, no matter how small, makes a
difference to a family down the street.
Whether you can share a few dollars, an hour of your time, pots and pans or simply prayers, you
can change the life of another. On behalf of all those who are served, we ask you to consider
making a gift to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. Collectively, we are the seeds that can
become a large bush for the “birds of the sky to come and dwell in its branches”.
In Christ’s Peace,

The above men are part of the group who began last summer as “aspirants.” The aspirancy year is a period of
intensive spiritual formation and discernment, after which those who desire to take the next step petition the
Archbishop to become candidates for the diaconate.
Now as deacon candidates these men will undergo four years of further spiritual formation, theological study, and
pastoral training prior to their prospective ordination in 2017.
Please pray for this cohort of deacon candidates and their families, as they generously respond to this special
invitation to follow Christ, who came not to serve but to become the servant or “deacon” of all.
