Eagle Trek Soars
On October 4th, 2012, hundreds of Eagles trekked ~970
cumulative miles around the lower field at Evansdale
Elementary on a gorgeous early autumn day to celebrate the
inaugural Eagle Trek walk-a-thon, a school fundraiser cosponsored by the foundation and PTA.
Dozens of staff members and parent volunteers
created a fun, healthy, and encouraging environment
as they helped students keep pace and track laps.
Hearts were pumping, faces were smiling, and feet
were stomping to the beat of Eagle Trek's astounding
success.
• Over $73,000 raised for our beloved school!
• Almost 1,000 individual donors from 5 countries
and 28 states!
• Approximately 50% student family donor
participation!
• 100% student participation on event day. Your track record of support for our foundation and
our school is well documented. However, the manner
in which parents, students, community members,
local businesses, family, friends, and Evansdale staff
pulled together for Eagle Trek is difficult to express in
words. Perhaps a little perspective can help us
express our gratitude...

• The PTA and foundation raised $55,000 from
respective fall fundraisers last year. We set a lofty
goal of $65,000 for Eagle Trek. Did we mention we
raised over $73,000?
• Previous fundraisers resulted in approximately 25%
student family participation vs. 50% this year!
• The foundation had approximately 250 individual
donors all of last year vs. almost 1,000 for Eagle
Trek!
We deeply and sincerely thank everyone for their
support. Because of you, we are quite literally better
prepared than ever to help Evansdale realize its full
potential. Special Thanks
It took a village and we are
thankful to everyone who

Tuesday Night Bites at Sprig
A big thank you to local eatery
Sprig Restaurant and Bar, located
in the Oak Grove neighborhood,
for hosting our Tuesday Night
Bites event on November 13.
Foundation board members, parents, students and staff enjoyed
Sprig's fresh and local cuisine. Parents and children alike loved
Sprig's veggie taste test idea for the kids, and each kid who tasted
all the vegetables received a free ice cream. Thanks to everyone
who came out to show their support! Look for future "Night
Bites" events coming in 2013!

HOT & BLUE 2013
Mark your calendars and get
ready.....the foundation will once again
present our annual spring auction on
Saturday, March 23, 2013. We look
forward to hosting the event and will
announce details in the very near
future. If you are interested in
contributing your time to the planning
of Red, Hot & Blue, please let a board
member know. It's fun and worthwhile!
Napoleon’s Loyalty Program
Napoleon’s restaurant (in Vista Grove shopping center) continues
to honor the loyalty program they began with us in 2010, providing the Foundation 5% back on all purchases at the
restaurant. This is free money for the foundation! If you don’t have a loyalty card, request one when dining at
Napoleon’s. Tell them you are an Evansdale supporter and then show the card every time you eat there.
Bake Sales a Success
We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in both of our bake sales this fall. One
was held at the Evansdale Consignment Sale and we also had the Election Day Bake Sale. Both were very
successful endeavors. Our dedicated bakers, sandwich artists and shift volunteers stepped up once again to help us
reach out to many people in the community and earn a cumulative $1,151 for Evansdale! Way to go, Eagles
volunteers!

A NOTE
FROM OUR
CHAIRMAN
One lesson that I have learned
working on the foundation board
over the past three years: there is
always more to do! Your
foundation has had a good fall
with EagleTrek exceeding our
goal. Now planning is underway for Red Hot
& Blue 2013. We would love to have your
help with this great event. If you are
interested, please contact Susan Ponder. Your
board is also actively engaged in succession
planning discussions as some of the board
members who have helped launch and build
the foundation are considering rolling off next
year to make room for new leadership and
catch their breath. We also have recently
expanded our corporate partnerships
committee, and my personal goal is to develop
strategies and marketing materials and begin a
campaign to recruit significant corporate
partners for Evansdale. Again, I want to
thank all of you for your support. We love
hearing from you, so please reach out to us

Interested In Serving On Our
Board?
This is our third year in existence and, as anticipated,
we have several board members who are planning to
roll off the board of directors after having served a
two or three year term. To ensure we find the right
skills and experience to fill vacant positions and
facilitate an effective transition, we're starting the
Nominating Committee process sooner than normal.
Zuzette Estevez will once again chair the Nominating
Committee with support from Rachel VanValkenburg,
Angie Claussen, Phil Castro, and JC Boyanton.
Be on the lookout for a formal announcement with
additional details in the January time frame. In the
interim, if you're interested in serving on our board
and are willing to make a two to three year
commitment, feel free to contact Zuzette, Rachel,
Angie, Phil, JC or any other board member. Thank
you for your support and consideration!

A Letter to the School Council
Dear School Council,
On behalf of the foundation board of
directors and our constituents, we want to thank
you for proactively addressing the challenging
issue of the future of Evansdale's Magnet
Program. Thank you for the foresight and courage
to partner with Dr. McGuire, school
administrators, teachers and parents to develop a
balanced and fair proposal. Thanks for ample
opportunity to provide input through email and
well facilitated focus groups. Thanks for being
open and fully disclosing the input you've
received. Thanks for listening and adjusting your
proposal based on what you heard.
As a non lobbying organization, we do not
officially support the proposal nor do we favor
certain recommendations over others. However,

as a like minded organization comprised
predominantly of Eagle parents who are very
invested in the health, vibrancy and future of
Evansdale, we appreciate what you are doing and
how you are doing it. Just as we strive to be
informed, open, transparent and inclusive in our
dealings with constituents, we appreciate the
example you've set through the Magnet Proposal
process.
Best of luck as you, Dr. McGuire, and
school administrators move forward. We look
forward to continued engagement, future updates
and a lasting partnership. Together, we will help
Evansdale realize its full potential.
Sincerely,
Evansdale Education Foundation
Investment Update
With Foundation funds, the Early Intervention Reading Specialist, Mrs. Jacqueline Whited, will be
receiving Orton-Gillingham Training in December. The Orton-Gillingham teaching method is primarily
used for students not reading at grade level or struggling to read, such as those with dyslexia. This theory
combines multisensory techniques along with the structure of the English language. This approach is
beneficial not only for students with dyslexia, but for all learners. It can be implemented in a large group
setting as well as with individuals, small groups and at-risk populations. The methodology allows for
differentiation of instruction and supports our investment criteria.
The Foundation continues to support gifted education training for teachers at Evansdale. Ms. Marla Watt
is participating in the training this year. She – and any teacher completing the program – will receive a
$1000 stipend upon completion of the program.

Separate Bodies, Like Minds
One of Evansdale's greatest strengths is parental engagement and support. This is reflected in
the level of commitment our parents have for the Evansdale PTA, Foundation, and School
Council. However, for many parents, especially those who are new to the Evansdale family,
deciphering the role of each organization can be a challenge. To help clarify the unique role we
each play, and the common vision we share, we have created the following Venn Diagram.
Although we are autonomous organizations with independent governing bodies, separate
decision making processes, and distinct missions, we partner to enrich the educational
experience at Evansdale. Simply stated, we are "separate bodies" with "like minds".
As always, thanks for your support. We hope the diagram helps to clarify what we each do and
how we each serve Evansdale. Jennifer Hatfield, Evansdale PTA President

The slogan on the event marketing said “Walk Much?”
Walking. It is something we all do every day as part of
our ordinary lives. But Eagle Trek was no ordinary
school fundraiser for our family this year. In December
2011, our son Brian (then a 1st grader at Evansdale)
suffered a traumatic brain injury due to an auto
accident and was given virtually no chance to survive.
Doctors predicted if by some miracle he did live he
would be permanently tied to life-support machines and
would never talk or walk again. Several Evansdale
Elementary families organized a candlelight vigil on the
athletic field of the school for Brian on a rainy night in
Brian with fellow Eagle, Lyle Foley. Eagle Trek, October 2012
late December after he had already been moved to hospice care. The vast majority of the people there had never
actually met us, since we had only moved to the neighborhood a few months earlier. Yet they came out to offer
prayers and support for our whole family. This sense of community is such a trademark of Evansdale!
After ten months full of physical therapy and other recovery that no medical professional could have predicted,
Brian was back at Evansdale as a 2nd grader, and participating in a walk-a-thon. He was able to walk three
laps on that very same athletic field, helping to raise $800 for his school. It was truly a return to normalcy for
our family after a year of challenges. Watching Brian complete his three laps, we couldn’t help but remember
the scene that had played out during that candlelight vigil, certainly a somber and sad gathering. Everyone
there and all of us with Brian at that time would have been grateful to know he would survive, much less be
walking on his own two feet in a walk-a-thon a short ten months later.
The field on which his classmates, teachers and Evansdale friends mourned is now the site of a milestone and
victory in the amazing recovery our son has made. After all the moral support we’ve received from Evansdale
administrators, teachers and families, we couldn’t think of a better reason for him to walk than to support his
school. Eagle Trek was definitely no ordinary event for us!

OUR
DONORS
AND
OUR COMMUNITY
“Thank you for the article. I enjoyed reading all of the great things that are happening
with the Evansdale community. I especially liked your comment about "common ground and sameness".
As I have been teaching the songs to the students for International Night, we have had numerous
classroom discussions about what we have in common. The children are enjoying learning the songs
"We've Got a Lot in Common" from Charlotte's Web and "It's A Small World". The school is very fortunate
to have such wonderful community support.

Our Mission Investment Criteria
The Evansdale Education Foundation is a non-profit
organization committed to providing direct
financial support to help Evansdale Elementary
School realize its full potential. Every dollar we raise,
every decision we make, and every penny we spend is
driven by our love and passion for current and future
Evansdale students. We invite those who share our
passion to join us in our mission to sustain and
develop Evansdale’s heritage of educational
excellence.
The following criteria are intended to help the
Foundation board make high quality decisions for
funding opportunities. These criteria can be
considered as a “yardstick for measuring
alternatives.” It is not intended that the criteria
prescribe what is funded, but rather are used as a tool
to determine the opportunities that most closely align
with the Foundation mission and meet the current and
long-term needs of the school. Our Guiding Principles
• Partner with Evansdale community, faculty, and
PTA.
• Identify, prioritize, and address Evansdale's most
critical educational needs, based on student, parent,
educator, administrator, and community input.
• Enrich academic and interpersonal experience.
• Promote student empowerment, diversity,
compassion, creativity, and discovery.
• Operate with openness, inclusion, respect, and
integrity.
8
Investment Criteria
•
Investments with the ability to obtain and
leverage additional funds;
•
Investments that impact the largest number of
students;
•
Investments that protect or enrich current
educational programs: Language arts, social
studies, science, art, PE, music, foreign
language, math and magnet programs;
•
Investments that promote smaller student/
teacher ratios;
•
Investments that the PTA cannot fund;
•
Investments not easily funded through public
and private grants;
•
Investments of high priority identified by
administration and/or faculty.

Why a Foundation?
The Evansdale Education Foundation was established in 2010 to partner with parents, administrators and
teachers to support our beloved school in ways DeKalb County and the Evansdale PTA cannot. We can fund
staff and other vital school needs over and above what can be funded by DeKalb County and the PTA. For
instance, we hired Jacqueline Whited for the 2011-12 school year and as a full time teacher for the 2012-2013
school year to ensure students receive the supplemental reading instruction they need. If not for our
intervention, this position—and its benefit to students— would be lost.
Our Goal
We’ve raised an astounding $125,000 in two short years due to generous support from Evansdale parents,
community members, and local businesses. Our goal is to exceed the $75,000 we raised last year in order to
preserve or enhance educational resources and programs at Evansdale. While lofty, continued support from
our constituents and a refined strategy to pursue new fundraising opportunities, makes the goal very
attainable.
