Hope House of Milwaukee Annual Report 2010
Hope House of Milwaukee
Annual Report 2010
Dear Friends,
The country’s struggling economic environment in 2010 produced mixed outcomes for the homeless and the community agencies that serve their needs.
Hope House and its guests certainly experienced some of its troubling effects.
So it is with pleasure to report our continuing success, highlighted by the opening of the Johnston Center Residences - pictured on this report’s cover. The Johnston Center provides “Permanent Supportive Housing”, a model proven to keep
chronically homeless adults off the streets and in safe affordable accommodations. The building also is a testament to the power of a collaboration effort that
brought together Mercy Housing, owner of the property, with Hope House along
with the financial support of Milwaukee County, the City of Milwaukee, the Department of Housing & Urban Development, and countless additional contributors.
The project’s ninety-one (91) apartment units were developed in the historic, but long
vacant, Johnston Community Health Center building and its newly constructed addition. Three onsite Hope House case managers provide supportive services that offer
the needed structure and resources to ensure that residents maintain their housing.
The staff persons engage each resident with effective personal management strategies along with connection to critical services including transportation assistance,
mental health and substance abuse counseling, protective payee money management,
educational opportunities, primary healthcare, and community food distributions.
We are pleased to add the Johnston Center collaboration to the array of Hope
House’s existing partnerships that provide innovative and creative solutions for Milwaukee’s homeless, as well as primary healthcare, anti-crime organizing, youth
and adult educational programming, emergency food and community development projects. In addition, several alliances have been formed this year that hold
the promise of the continued expansion of Hope House’s reach and effectiveness.
Through our proven strategy of partnership, bolstered by the financial assistance and encouragement of our friends, Hope House will strive
to ‘End homelessness and build healthy communities’ far into the future.
