Dr. Boyd E. McCracken
1923 - 2015
Greenville Regional Hospital’s Board of Directors and
staff are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Boyd E.
McCracken and would like to offer their condolences
to his family, friends, and patients.
As one of the founding fathers of Greenville Regional
Hospital, Dr. Boyd E. McCracken was vital in the
formation and architectural design of the hospital,
in addition to serving as the first president of the
hospital board of directors in May of 1956. As the board
president, he helped the hospital apply for many federal
and state funds, organized fundraising efforts, and
oversaw the budget of $800,000 for the construction
of the 32 - 40 bed Edward A. Utlaut Memorial Hospital.
With his wife, Julia, as one of the organizers of the Utlaut
Hospital Auxiliary, Dr. McCracken also supported the
development of the auxiliary. Throughout his years as
a practicing physician, he treated many thousands of
patients and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the hospital in 2005.
Today, we remember the impact that Dr. McCracken
made on the hospital by “Boyd’s Bears,” which are teddy
bears given to Greenville Regional Hospital’s young
patients to provide them comfort and warmth. The gift
of the bear makes a very fitting tribute to a man who
spent his life providing warmth, comfort, and care to the

GRH TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR PATIENT SAFETY INITIATIVES

Illinois Provider Trust (IPT) is a

their affiliated physicians, including
GRH. On an annual basis, IPT
offers a Risk Exposure Adjustment
Program (REAP). This program is an
opportunity for hospitals to receive
a credit (total of 7%), which results
in financial savings, but it can also
cause the hospital to receive a debit
(total of 16%), which means an
additional cost to the hospital.

Greenville Regional Hospital employees improved the quality of care we provided our patients, and thus, earned the
hospital $90,000 through the Medicare Value Based Purchasing (VBP) incentives program. As a hospital, we earned

Pneumonia, Patient Safety Indicators, and Central Line Blood Stream Infection rates.
