Rebirth of aVision
The year 2006 marked the 1000th anniversary of the founding
of a mystery school in Chartres, France, that for two
centuries was the most important center of learning in
Europe, giving birth to a flowering of mystical knowledge
and artistic expression. It was the time of the Crusades, and
yet the school established communication and exchange
with the Sufis in Jerusalem and received from them the
geometric designs required for Gothic architecture. These
designs proved to be critically important in the magnificent
creation of Chartres Cathedral, among the first of the
Gothic cathedrals, and thereby helped to launch a new
era in European history.
The mystery school was established in 1006 by Fulbert,
a prominent mystic and builder of his time, who became
Bishop of Chartres and founded the school out of a
profound intention of enabling his students to express the
highest reaches of the divine human through adoration
of the Divine Feminine.
Each year the Druids
would gather at this ancient
site worshipping a Black
Madonna giving birth to
the Divine Child, engaging
with the earth’s energies in an
alchemy of awakening.
Fulbert was building on an ancient tradition at
Chartres that had already existed there for millennia.
A thousand years before the time of Christ, Druids
throughout Europe recognized the mound at Chartres as
a locus of powerful earth energies, and consecrated the
site as a center for ritual healing. Each year the Druids
would gather at this ancient site worshipping a Black
Madonna giving birth to the Divine Child, engaging
with the earth’s energies in an alchemy of awakening.
Fulbert’s mystery school at Chartres was based on an
initiatory teaching of the Seven Liberal Arts, which had
formed the cornerstone of learning since the ancient
civilizations of Egypt and Greece. Expressed through the
subtleties of alchemy, astrology and sacred art, known as the
“erotic sciences,” the study of the Seven Liberal Arts helped to
cultivate personal and social transformation. The Chartres
School attracted philosophers and visionaries from all over
Europe as well as the East, including Druidic, Jewish, Sufi
and, according to some scholars, Hindu masters.
New Chartres School
Wisdom University is honored to present
the New Chartres School, a remembering and
a reinterpretation of the original Chartres
School and the visionaries who gathered there.
New Chartres School is designed as an initiation into
the wellspring of wisdom developed by the wise
ones of civilizations long past, as well as a gateway
to an encounter with the mysteries of Creation.
Studying the deeper mysteries is of particular
importance at a time such as ours when our world
is clearly in crisis, and only a deep and creative
reconnection with universal truths will suffice to
catalyze the solutions we all seek.
New Chartres School will be comprised of seven
seven-day intensives over the course of 7 years
offering an initiatory exploration of the Seven
Liberal Arts of Grammatica, Dialectica, Rhetorica,
Musica, Arthmetica, Geometrica, and Astronomica, as
refracted through the portals of alchemy, astrology
and sacred art.

is of particular importance at
a time such as ours when our
world is clearly in crisis
Following the original mystery school, each
intensive will have one of the Liberal Arts as its
focus, including a historical representative of that
art, a guiding planet, and an immersion into one
of the world’s wisdom traditions. New Chartres
School will be supported and led by a team of core
faculty, all of whom are keenly aware of the gravity
of the current world situation and are immersed
in the Chartres tradition, including:
Angeles Arrien • Lauren Artress • Lynn Bell
Apela Colorado • Karuna Erickson • Alex Grey
Jean Houston • Andrew Harvey • Barbara Marx Hubbard
Caroline Myss • Colette van Praag • Gabrielle Roth
Rupert Sheldrake
Additional faculty will be invited who represent the best minds and visionary hearts of our times,
dedicated to the development of more potent vehicles for personal and social transformation.
Intensive I—The Mystery of the Birth of the Divine Human, July 2-8, 2006
Intensive II—The State of the World: Wisdom and the Apocalypse, July 7-13, 2007
Intensive III—Reimagining the World: The Perennial Wisdom and the Poetry of Beauty, July 6-12, 2008
This intensive will be in partnership with Veriditas.
Intensive IV—Awakening Divine Creativity: The Arts of Healing and Ecstasy, July 5-11, 2009
Intensive V— Sacred Number - The Matrix of the Universe - July 4-10, 2010
Intensive VI—The Mysteries of the Divine Feminine, July 3-9, 2011
Intensive VII—Sacred Activism: Birthing the New World, July 1-7, 2012
All intensives will be held in Chartres, France, at the seminary adjacent to the
Cathedral where the original Chartres School stood. Anyone with a deep commitment
to the mysteries is invited. The cost for each intensive is $1000, or $1600 if taken
for credit toward a Masters Degree in Wisdom Spirituality or a Doctor of Ministry
Degree at Wisdom University.
Our challenge today is whether we can come together with such a dedication
to the sacred, that we, like the old Masters of Chartres, transform our
lives into building blocks for the betterment of humanity, fi lled with beauty,
holiness, wisdom and light.
If we do, we can transform the world.
