Chickens in Coops
and Ferry Boatmen

The business that developed at the Fair Boat Landing south
of the State Street Bridge and west of downtown Belvidere
was roughly equivalent to watching a one-man marching
band. The enterprising establishment had more businesses
in operation than there were businesses in need in Belvidere
at the turn of the century. This mercantile operation was one
that today we could examine and celebrate as an economic
creation that could have accomplished more than the
February Stimulus package enacted by Congress. But by
examining the photograph we might conclude, the business
was, at best, a two-man operation.
The business thrived on the banks of the Kishwaukee
River for years late in the 1800s and was a favorite spot for
local wives in town to frequent when they had a taste for
a whole fryer chicken for Sunday dinner. Those were the
days before supermarkets that appeared across the nation in
the 1940s and 1950s.
When it was time to stock the larder at home one would
walk to visit the bakery and then hitch the team to go to
the farmers’ market to buy fresh vegetables for the dinner
table for that day and that which would be canned for winter
dinners. One would also walk to the dairy or creamery
for butter and cheese and milk or visit a local butcher for
salt pork for winter eating or a roast or some of that spiced
sausage and hickory-smoked bacon that was so good any
time of the year.
But if poultry was on the menu, one could not go
wrong by going down to the river and to visit the Fair Boat
Landing. In addition to chickens and eggs, they also sold
fat and tasty pigeon. If people today will eat pheasant and
quail, they could learn to enjoy fresh-roasted pigeon, the
bird some call a “flying rat” that some considered a favored
unique delicacy.
There is an argument that thrives today in science
laboratories and even among hunters across the nation. One
group suggests that pigeons are creatures as valuable to the
planet as rabbits and deer. The other side of the argument
attests that pigeons are nothing more than flying rodents
whose future is better ascribed to become extinct. The
argument is rhetorical in nature and there is no resolution or
agreement between those that fervently hold to their views.
However, fat-breasted pigeons that were corn-fed and
cared for in surroundings similar to what was found in the
photograph were certain to be moist and flavorful, as much
as a small roaster chicken. But chicken, eggs, and pigeons
were not the only enterprises that thrived at this emporium
along the river, the Fair Boat Landing.
The mercantile wizards of the Kishwaukee River also
provided ferry crossings for idle lovers who wanted to slowly
paddle along the river on those long summer evenings. The
proprietors also offered valued services for those who were
below and did not want to climb up to the street and cross the
State Street Bridge. One should not laugh, there were some
that lived in those distant earlier days that did not believe it
wise to cross the river walking or riding over a bridge. After
all, just look at the Brooklyn Bridge or the Golden Gate
Bridge, those were flimsy structures supported by wires, not
many would trust that thing to withstand troops marching to
their garrison or wagons laden with luggage.
It is uncertain if those that did not believe in crossing a
river over a bridge worried the bridge could not hold them or
that the path was not properly anchored on either side of the
river. Some succumbed to arcane superstitions that addled
their mind so that they would not believe that a bridge could
properly be used to convey them from one bank to another
bank of a river. Regardless of the reasoning and, perhaps
some that held this aversion did not have any reason they
could articulate, there were those a century ago who refused
to cross the river via a bridge and would insist on riding the
ferry if they needed to get to the other side.
Of course, the concern of the few was never manifested
in any actual collapse or even a spasm of uncertainty
regardless of how many horses, people and wagons or later,
how many trucks or cars crossed the conveyance at any one
time. But the question of whether the span could support the
weight of the freight had nothing to do with the concern held
by those that refused to cross.
Maybe the unwillingness of some to cross the State Street
Bridge had to do with a deeper concern or superstition.
Maybe that concern had to do with an unwarranted and
unsupportable superstition that had sustained for decades if
not a century or more. That superstition was manifest in an
unwillingness of some to say goodbye to a loved one or a
distant acquaintance while they both stood on a bridge. As
odd as that might sound to some, this is an actual superstition
that some hold, barring them from crossing a bridge.
The superstition recites, “Saying goodbye to anyone
on a bridge means you will never meet again.” That is a
superstition that echoes for some with a strong chord of
finality. There can be little doubt in the conclusion of the
superstition than what is obvious, to say goodbye on a
bridge means the couple will never meet again.
Certainly that is no distinguishable or similar superstition
associated with taking a ferry boat across a river. But even
though the path across the bridge required no fee and the
ferry did carry a fee, for those that held the aforementioned
superstition might have justified, the expense of the ferry
was worth not having to worry about saying goodbye and
never seeing a friend ever again. We might wonder if the
same people that were hesitant to cross a bridge were also
uncertain about mirrors or even avoided letting black cats
cross their path.

The announcement came last Thursday in the form of an
email transmitted from Chrysler Group, LLC headquarters
in Auburn Hills, Michigan. From the moment the email
reached Belvidere United Auto Workers (UAW) local
headquarters that serves the Chrysler plant, the sigh of relief
was almost audible from Sycamore to Rockford and from
Loves Park to Beloit and all across Boone County resulting
from the news.

American Legion Day, September 16th, center of national
campaign. Rep. Deborah L. Halvorson, D-Ill., introduced
House Resolution 679 on July 24th, calling on the nation to
boserve American Legion Day on September 16, the date in
1919 when the organization received its federal charter. The
first American Legion Day will also trigger a three month
“Legiontown USA’’ campaign to recognize communities
where posts play an important role. “Every year, members
of the American Legion donate thousands of hours of
community service in veterans medical facilities and homes
to care for our nation’s heroes,’’ Halvorson said. “They
also sponsor many youth organizations, donate millions of
dollars in college scholarships, and provide a high level of
service to our nation’s youth.’’
Locally Juniors in high school have been sponsored to
Boys and Girls state. Money is also donated to Boy Scouts,
youth baseball and many other projects. When fish frys and

Social Security and Healthcare
Would be Enacted Today
The title of the Act was “The Old-Age Survivors
Disability Insurance” but as time advanced the name for
the legislation came to be commonly known as “The Social
Security Act of 1935.” The road to enactment was not
easy and a similar path is ahead for HR 3200, “America’s
Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.”
Because we have no bill passed by the House or the
Senate the matter remains in limbo and voters do not feel
secure in limbo regarding their healthcare. However, the
controversy that welcomed the Social Security Act into
law is mirrored, in part, in what we see today.
Some wonder if the Social Security Act were being
debated today, would it be enacted? America in 1935 was
different from the America of today with a federal budget
totaling $6.41 billion and an unemployment rate at 22
percent yet, legislators acted in 1935.
This summer Americans attended “Town-Hall”
meetings designed to provide voters an opportunity
to express their views to legislators on the healthcare
measure. However, for many, these events served as an
entertaining alternative to rerun TV programming.
Though 1935 was very different from 2009, some of
the same criticisms of Social Security have been aimed at
national healthcare. Some feared that Social Security would
increase taxes. Others feared the Act was an example of
Socialism. Still others criticized the Act because segments
of the population were excluded. The constitutionality of
the Act was challenged, but the Supreme Court sustained
the legality of the Act on two occasions.
Similar arguments have arisen regarding national
healthcare. Those supporting HR 3200 claim health
insurance problems are at crisis proportions demanding
that changes be made. Others fear HR 3200 is a means to
significantly expand government and wonder if the new
system proposed would inflate the national debt to crisis
proportions.
Some believe the current health insurance system must
be scrapped and a new system created that would be better
managed by the government. Others claim the problems
in the system can be resolved and those not insured now
could be brought into the existing system for much less
cost than what is needed to create a new system. Yet, there
remains the nagging question, would this society enact
Social Security today?
To answer that question we must plumb far below
mere politics to the core of the American system of
governance to determine if this society in 2009 would
enact a new means to manage a social problem. As with
all American legislation a compromised, negotiated result
of what was initially proposed is often less than what all

Staff Dwindles

With the upcoming resignation of a deputy, the Boone
County Sheriff’s Department will be down to 36 sworn
deputies on duty. Boone County Sheriff Duane Wirth
disclosed this information to county officials at the
September meeting of the Boone County Board Public
Safety Committee.
Wirth explained that due to budget concerns he has
refrained from filling the position of a retired deputy. In
addition, the department is minus other personnel due to
health problems and other reasons.
“I am not planning to hiring replacements,” said Wirth.
“I am doing my best to hold down the budget. I am also
losing a secretary. That’s another several thousand we will
save. Between the secretary and the deputy the savings will
be about $14,000 for the rest of the year.”
A recent accident involving a squad car was also
discussed.
“The vehicle was totaled out and as scrap could get
about $6,000,” Lt. Phil Beu said.
“The insurance company will pay for the extra
equipment,” said Wirth. But a new vehicle would be about
$17,000. That vehicle would require retrofitting with
specialized equipment from sirens and lights to reinforced
seats and other items.
County Board representative Marshall Newhouse
(District 1) asked the sheriff what the average mileage of the
fleet’s vehicles was. Beu replied that they have an average
of about 60,000 at this time.

Danny Anderson (District 1) asked about the insurance
coverage, since the accident was determined not to be the
fault of the deputy.
“So why is the county still on the hook for $20,000?”
Anderson asked.
Beu replied that the vehicle was a 1994 model and that
the insurance reimbursement was based on replacing it with
a similar year vehicle.
County board representative Cathy Ward (District
2) recalled speaking with one of the members of Crime
parties had initially wanted. Yet, because both sides must
compromise the law that results is often made better than
what the initial idea was when proposed.
For some the question has been diminished to mere
politics as one party seeks to overcome the other, but that
does a disservice to the people who need help. Yet, would
our society enact Social Security legislation today?
The resounding answer is “yes,” this society today is
little different from previous societies that were faced with
problems and found solutions. So much of governance
is housekeeping, with some important measures arising
for debate. But on occasion, supreme questions come
before legislators that require deliberative resolution.
The current situation with healthcare is an example of a
national concern that has now come to the fore.
If the national unemployment rate today were 22
percent, if 50 percent of the people in the nation today
were living in poverty and if there were no system in place
to provide help for those in need, Social Security would,
indeed, be enacted today.
The national healthcare system that will be enacted
will be different from what is written in HR 3200, but
this democratic system of governance in America was
created on the basis that debate and discussion provides
for better law. As the question stands now legislators have
HR 3200, the Baucus Proposal announced on Wednesday
and the plan President Obama issued later that night for a
national healthcare system.
Where is the problem if irregularities contained in any
of these suggested measures are amended, altered and
improved? No one has yet proven that any of these ideas
were divinely inspired. Amending irregularities should
not be motivated by politics but should occur to improve
the final law enacted. If that were the guiding approach,
then American voters would more likely benefit from a
truly bipartisan approach to the measure.
Those who lament the situation regarding HR 3200
should take heart, the national debate is being waged
and the willingness to act is evident in Washington, D.C.
After years ignoring these problems legislators are now
debating how the system can be improved and that is good
for every citizen.
The final measure enacted will not please all and
probably not please many, but it will be a step taken and
out of that step will emerge further steps to repair inequities
that Democrats and Republicans agree must be removed.
The Social Security Act passed in 1935 is significantly
improved today because it was debated, amended and
altered over the years and a similar end could await HR
3200.
Stoppers about the group having a lot of money that could
be used for various law enforcement needs. “Could any of
that money help with replacing the vehicle?” Ward asked.
Wirth and Beu explained that the Crime Stoppers fund
was reserved mainly for the tip program; however, once a
year, they distribute a grant to the sheriff’s department that
can be used as needed. “They have already distributed
money to the department for this year,” said Wirth. “To go
back and ask for more? I just don’t know.”
County board representative Karl Johnson (District 2)
asked how much the resignation of the deputy would free up.
Beu replied that it would be about $11,000 for the year.
Committee members were concerned with the aging
fleet and asked Wirth about the ever-increasing mileage on
the cars.
“I can’t tell you how many cars; probably at least six
with 100,000 to 150,000 miles on them,” said Wirth. “I
can’t tell you where I’d be if one of those breaks down. It’s
not a luxury. I’ve waited two years to buy a car. I don’t want
to put an officer in danger [because a car breaks down.] It
takes time to stripe and fit them for duty.”
Johnson asked if the department could pull a car off the
road to keep it from accruing mileage.
“That’s a decision for my department to make,” Wirth
said. Johnson recollected the sheriff’s statement that he had
not planned to buy any new cars in Fiscal Year 2010.
“That’s right,” said Wirth, “but I am still down two cars
right now. One car is not drivable.”
Beu noted that they have started stripping things from
the non-functional vehicle for other cars. “We are actually
taking the doors off one car and parting it out to fix other
cars.”
“It seems we’re borrowing from Peter to pay Paul,” said
Newhouse. “Not replacing two people to get a car? What
happens when we are down two people? Will it affect our
response time? What will it affect?”
Wirth said he must consider laying off two deputies just
to meet the latest budget guidelines.
After years of trying to build the number of deputies
the department needs, recent setbacks in the economy and
thus the county budget, take them back almost two years,
according to Beu.
“We are about at the levels we were two years ago,” Beu
said. He also explained that the number of driving under the
influence (DUI) arrests greatly contributes to the revenues

the department receives and can make a big difference in
the budget.
“Last month we had 30 DUI arrests,” Beu said. “Once
they go to court we get $30,000 (approximately $1,000 each
in fines to the department). That’s where the money comes
from. We do all the high schools, Edwards, local dances.
Where you’re going to see it is in the local production
numbers.”
Ward asked how helping those businesses and the
schools works. Beu responded that they pay the department
for the deputies.
A vote to purchase a new squad was passed by the
committee.
BELVIDERE TOWNSHIP PARK DISTRICT
NOTICE OF HEARING
The Belvidere Township Park District will hold a public
hearing on the 22nd day of September, 2009 at 5:00 pm.
The hearing will be held at the Baltic Mill Annex, 920
West Lincoln Avenue, Belvidere, Illinois. The purpose
of the hearing will be to receive public comments on the
proposal to sell bonds in the amount of $915,000.00 for the
purpose of the payment of land condemned or purchased
for parks, for the building, maintaining, improving and
protecting of the same, and for the payment of expenses
incident thereto.

Poplar Grove Could Form
Parks & Rec. Committee

When Poplar Grove Village President Brad Rightnowar was running for office earlier this year he talked about wanting
to enhance recreational opportunities for residents.
That wish is starting to take shape as the Administration Committee looks to form a parks and recreation advisory
committee.
As Rightnowar sees it, the new panel would be made up of four village residents, two members of the Poplar Grove
Lions Club, four members of the Planning Commission, the chairman of the Administration Committee, current Village
Trustee Kris Campbell, and the village president.
One of its projects would be identifying a bicycle path system and how to implement it. The committee also would look
at the positives and negatives of parks and recreation space the village has now.
“This is one of the biggest absences in the (new) comprehensive plan,’’ Administration Committee member Robert Fry
said during the August 24 meeting.
Campbell said the committee “obviously’’ will work with the Belvidere Park District, which takes in most of the village.
“But do we want to create our own?’’ he asked, adding, “We may want to think about this for a month.’’
The committee’s next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. September 28 at village hall.
In the meantime, Rightnowar suggested Poplar Grove officials talk with their counterparts in Caledonia and Capron for
their thoughts, as well as the school district and Knights of Columbus.
Campbell also wondered why the village president suggested the new parks and recreation committee, should it be
created, have four representatives of the planning commission.
“I thought they might be the best group to provide direction, but I’m not married to this,’’ Rightnowar answered. “I do
want to have a strong voice from the community saying, ‘This is what we want.’”
“Then there’s the matter of paying for it,’’ he added.
Beyond that, he said he would expect formation of a subcommittee to study a possible bicycle path, as well as what
should be done with existing parks and the downtown.

All of that brought up the question of community support.
Fry, one of the architects of the comprehensive plan, said there wasn’t much participation from residents during that
process.
Administration Committee member Judi Zangs said the same was true of the ongoing plan to have a sesquicentennial
celebration October 17-18.
Committee members hope more people will be involved in the leisure-time study and beyond, providing their expertise
rather than forcing the village to pay for such knowledge.
Also August 24, the Administration Committee looked briefly at the annexation process and how quite often the village
gets stuck paying extra costs that aren’t known at the outset.
Campbell wanted all of the costs to be known, with the developers footing those bills.
But Fry wondered how those costs could be determined ahead of time.
Rightnowar suggested Northern Illinois University or the University of Illinois could conduct a study of the impact of
development and come up with a formula to determine the costs. But he added quickly that such a study could cost up to
$20,000.
“We don’t have $20,000,’’

There will be a formal Poplar Grove Sesquicentennial
collector’s booklet but it won’t be available until after the
celebration, planned for October 17-18.
The booklet will include a reprint of the 1959 program,
along with information on the past 50 years. It also is hoped
to have photographs from this year’s party.
Meanwhile, there will be a smaller events program, with
advertising, which includes a schedule of activities planned

A wildly fun time can be had on Saturday, September
12 when the Big Hat Rodeo returns to the Boone County
Fairgrounds for two performances, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Hosted by the Tebala Shrine Horse Patrol world-champion
horses and cowboy athletes will show their stuff, all set to
exciting background music.
The Big Hat Rodeo is a full rodeo bonanza, with
bareback riding, team roping, classic saddle bronc riding,
tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing and steer wrestling.
Bareback riders will earn points for how well they ride, and
their horses will be given points for how well they buck.
Teams of two ropers will work together at team roping
as they put their ropes around the saddle horn and hind leg
of a steer. Classic saddle bronc horses “Miss Rodeo” and
“The Avenger,” among others will show their strength as
the riders try to break their will not to be ridden, a task any
good cow hand should how to master. Tie-down roping is
one that developed out of every day ranch work where a
rider on horseback catches a calf with a rope and ties its
three legs together.
Steer wrestling sounds like a dangerous time, but very
thrilling. The rider must jump from the back of a horse at
more than 30 mph and onto a 500-pound (or more) steer’s
back and subsequently wrestle the huge animal to the
ground. Now that’s “wrastlin’.”
For the lighter-hearted attendee, professional rodeo
clowns will be there to perform skits and provide activities
for the kids, including the “boot toss” where the winner gets
a prize.
The annual event is a fund raiser for the Tebala Shrine
Horse Patrol for the upkeep of their animals and barns, plus
a portion of it goes to Shiners Hospital. Over the years,
Tebala has donated $60,000-$80,000 to the hospital from
the proceeds, their recorder Craig Sand said. Ticket price is
$10 and can be purchased at the Tebala Conference Center,
7910 Newburg Rd. in Rockford.

Radio Expo
Also occurring at the Boone County Fairgrounds this
weekend will be the Radio Expo 2009, presented by the
“Chicago FM Club (CFMC).” On Saturday, September 12
and Sunday, September 13, the CFMC will showcase radios,
computers and electronics at the indoor exhibit buildings
while also holding an outdoor flea market.
The Chicago Amateur Radio Club is a not-for-profit
group that holds all kinds of events throughout the year,
including “Hamfest,” “fox hunts,” and field days. Their
website says they are “Dedicated to technical improvement
and public service within our community.”
Check them out at www.chicagofmclub.org where there
is information about the club, membership and classes, and
it looks like the classes are free.
Anyone wishing to camp at the fairgrounds can do so
(without service). Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the

Blues Diva Shirley King in Concert
Down the road in Sycamore, the reigning king of the
blues’ baby girl, Shirley King will perform at the Good
Tymes Shelter at the Airport Road Sports Complex in
Sycamore on Sunday, September 13. This free concert will
begin at 5 p.m. and lawn chairs and snacks are recommended
for an extra good time.
Ms. King will bring some Chicago blues to DeKalb
County, just weeks after having to cancel her show at a
street dance in Elgin for health reasons. Luckily Dave Weld
and The Imperial Flames, also from Chicago, were able
to fill in for her. King performed in Sycamore two years
ago to a large crowd, and Sycamore Park District Program
Supervisor Bart Desch said he was glad to get her to come
back for 2009.
The concert series was originally Desch’s idea, and now
the rest of the park district staff pitches in to help make it
all happen. “It has been fun to do,” Desch said. “I started
one concert five years ago. I had to find all the funds to do
the concerts so that’s been a challenge, but people like the
concert series.”
With Shirley King, it is not just music or just the blues; it
is American history, an American success story and a fatherdaughter relationship that she brings to the stage along with
her own talents. She shows how that talent has developed
on her originals such as her own testament to being raised in
a musical family, “Daughter of the Blues,” where she says
“it’s my turn to do it right.”
She tells the story of how she uses the lessons her father
B.B. taught her to keep from letting her own grown-up blues
from get the best of her. Hopefully, she will share this easy,
laidback blues mix and the horn-driven fun song “Keep
Your Dog away from My Cat.” Cats and dogs often find
themselves in blues songs, and the lyrics can get raunchy.
Anyone not wanting to subject their kiddies to the
vulgarities of the blues might want to reconsider the event;
however, anyone wanting to expose their kids to authentic
culture, the daughter of a legend and a great Chicago blues
band might see the lyrics as no worse than what is on
TV every night. At least the meanings in blues songs are
disguised with metaphors, if only thinly veiled.
There is plenty of free parking at the event, and they will
sell pop and beer. People are encouraged to bring their own
food to munch on, or even grill if they like.

Camp Grant Day
Every fall the Rockford Park District (RPD) plans a
“Fabulous Fall Fun Day.” This year’s theme is “Report to
Duty at Camp Grant,” which will focus on the historical and
cultural value of (Seth B.) Atwood Park and the New Milford
Cemetery. It is all part of RPD’s 100-year anniversary
celebration and the tours and learning will take place form
12 noon to 4 p.m.
Atwood Park once was the destination of nearly every
sixth-grade class in Rockford Public School District, and
perhaps others. The Atwood Environmental Center would
be their home for two nights and two days and kids got the
chance to explore nature with guides and teachers and to
“rough it a bit.”
Before the kids roughed it there, the park was part of
Camp Grant, the station for the United States soldiers
and many prisoners of war. Patrons can tour the grounds
themselves to check out Burma Bridge, the Pump House
and the original target pit, bunkers and buildings erected by
the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) during the New Deal
era.
Re-enactors and interpreters will be on hand throughout
the day. From 2:15 to 3 p.m. audiences can listen to
presentations on life as a soldier during both world wars as
well as in 2009. At 2:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., cemetery tours
will be given. At 2 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. today’s
soldiers will lead marching drills. Craft time is 2-4 p.m. and
all will be accented with piped-in music from the era.
“Donut Dolly’s” concession stand will be open throughout
the day, selling donuts, coffee, roast beef sandwiches and
various beverages. The event is free, but donations will
be accepted. Atwood Park is located at 2685 New Milford

For those wanting to know even more about Camp Grant,
there will be a Friends of Camp Grant meeting at the Camp
Grant Museum on Thursday, September 17. The museum
is inside the Command Post Restaurant, 1004 Samuelson
Road in Rockford. It’s almost to New Milford, but definitely
worth the trek, both for the good food and the museum
artifacts, all housed on old Camp Grant territory where the
troops, and prisoners of war, actually lived. The meeting
begins at 7 p.m. and the restaurant will stay open until 7
p.m. for those who want to make it a complete experience.

North Boone-Still Unbeaten;
Bucs, Thunder Fall in NIC-10

North Boone High School is the county’s only undefeated
varsity football team after two weeks of action.
In their home opener the Vikings (2-0) raced to a 52-0 halftime
lead against outmatched St. Frances de Sales of Chicago on their
way to 58-6 non-conference victory.
So far this year North Boone has outscored its opponents, 8618, as it tries to improve on last year’s 3-6 record.
Meanwhile, Belvidere (1-1) tasted defeat in the NIC-10 for
the first time, losing 34-14 to Hononegah (2-0) at Funderburg
Stadium.
Belvidere North (0-2) traveled to Machesney Park where they
were defeated by the host, the Harlem Huskies, 31-12.
Belvidere
Hononegah played its accustomed smash-mouth brand
of football in running the ball 45 times for 303 yards and five
touchdowns.
The Bucs had their moments, though, and with a break here or
there could have put more than two touchdowns on the board.
They were down by just 7-0 late in the first quarter when Evan
DuBose recovered a fumble at the Indian 16. A holding penalty
slowed that scoring opportunity, however, and the Bucs finally ran
out of downs at the Hononegah 25.
Midway through the second quarter a 37-yard kickoff return
by Marcus Gooden set up Belvidere at midfield. Quarterback
James Johnson directed a threat that included a leaping 20-yard
pass reception by Kyle Harris at the 18.
But the drive stalled at that point and a 35-yard field goal
attempt at the 6:06 mark was wide right.
Hononegah was on top, 14-0, at halftime.
Belvidere had another chance early in the third quarter when
defensive end Brycen Johnson tipped a pass and it was intercepted
by Stephen Mead, who returned to the Hononegah 47. But the
Bucs could get no closer than the 38 and once again turned the
ball over on downs.
With Hononegah up 21-0, Belvidere scrambled back into the
game as Johnson fashioned a six-play, 65-yard drive to pay dirt.
His 38-yard scramble put the ball at the eight and two plays later
Brandon Gross scored from the three.
Dana Glasenapp kicked the extra point to slice the deficit to
21-7 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.
But Hononegah struck for two scores to increase the lead to
34-7 with 8:06 left in the game.
Belvidere followed the Indians’ second TD with its final
scoring drive of the game that covered 55 yards and featured a
27-yard screen pass from Johnson to Jacob Vincent.
Hononegah threatened to thwart that effort at the goal line
by stopping three consecutive runs from the one-yard line. Then
Gooden muscled his way into the end zone on a fourth-down play,
Glasenapp kicked the PAT and it was 34-14 with 3:18 to go.
Defensively, in addition to the fumble recovery and pass
interception, Belvidere made three tackles for losses and one
quarterback sack.
North Boone
The Vikings once again stepped up the offense as they rolled
past St. Frances de Sales for their second non-conference victory.
Junior quarterback Alex Albrecht accounted for seven
touchdowns. He carried the ball seven times for 97 yards and three
scores while completing 7-of-10 passes for 262 yards and four
TDs.
In two games Albrecht is 20-of-40 passing for 488 yards and
four touchdowns while amassing 800 all-purpose yards.
There were other contributors to the fireworks as well.
Josh Gvist ran the ball five times for 45 yards to help out on the
ground. Mitch Mischung carried twice for 33 yards; Steve Danhoff
ran four times for 30 yards.
The receiving corps included Christian Embry with two catches
for 42 yards; Tyler Nelson, two receptions for 72 yards; Brett
LaMere, one catch for 56 yards; Mitch Mischung, one reception
for 75 yards. Each scored one touchdown.
Jared Boehmke also caught one pass for 17 yards.
Defensively, North Boone held St. Francis to a lone touchdown
that came late in the game.
Belvidere North
Rockford Harlem edged ahead in the series with the visiting
Blue Thunder, 2-1, having lost by forfeit in 2007 and winning, 247, in 2008.
North was trailing 17-0 when it scored its first touchdown of
the game in the second quarter. That came on a 20-yard pass from
quarterback Keith Larson to running back Dylan Roberts.
The extra point attempt was blocked.
Harlem scored once more before halftime to lead at the break,
24-6.
It was 31-6 when the Blue Thunder scored for the second
time, on a spectacular 80-yard run by Zach Stinson. The two-point
conversion attempt failed, leaving the final score at 31-12.
Tonight’s Games
North Boone will entertain Rockford Lutheran (0-2), looking
to go to 3-0. Lutheran was hammered 57-7 last week by Elgin St.
Edward, which continued to feast on Big Northern teams. In the
season opener St. Edward routed Hampshire, 32-0.
The Vikings will have to be cautious and not look past Lutheran
to Sept. 18, when they travel to Genoa-Kingston (2-0) for their
fourth and final non-conference game of the fall.
Belvidere North (0-2) will travel to Guilford (1-1) to take on
the Vikings, who gave Boylan a fierce battle before succumbing to
two fourth-quarter touchdowns, 21-3.
“There are four perennial 7-A playoff teams … Hononegah,
Harlem, Guilford and Boylan,’’ said Blue Thunder Head Coach
Curt Tobin. “There’s a reason why that happens.’’
Each school, he said, has a “good solid program and very good
athletes.’’ Of Guilford, which likes to run, he said, “I expect a team
as good as Hononegah and Harlem,’’ which defeated North by
respective scores of 40-0 and 31-12.
To win tonight, Coach Tobin said his team “will have to put
together a full game. We gave Harlem a tough three quarters.’’
Belvidere (1-1) will be home for the second straight week,
entertaining a Harlem (1-1) team that can both run and pass the
ball.

Former Belvidere High School quarterback and punter
Matt Barr, along with the rest of the Western Illinois
University Leathernecks, will face the Northern Illinois
University Huskies in DeKalb, Ill. on Saturday, September
12, 2009.
Barr, a 2006 graduate of Belvidere High School, is a
junior and third-year starter for Western’s football team. As
a senior in 2005, Barr led the Bucs to the Class 7A State
Semifinals. He was an all-conference quarterback and punter
and the league’s 2005 offensive Most Valuable Player.

Belvidere High School’s cheering section made its way to
Belvidere North on Tuesday to show continuing support for the
Lady Bucs varsity volleyball team.
Enjoying the playoff atmosphere, the Lady Bucs broke into the
NIC-10 win column with 25-17 and 25-15 victories.
Seniors Heather Hyland and Ashley Brown sparked the success,
accounting for 21 of their team’s 50 points.
Hyland had a dozen kills to go with two service aces; Brown
had five kills and two blocks.
Amanda Stroud stepped up with five acres and two kills, while
April Ford had three kills.
“I love the Belvidere-Belvidere North series,’’ Lady Bucs Head
Coach Nik Butenhoff said afterward. “This is how the game should
be played, in a gym with a big crowd.’’
Some Belvidere girls played new positions in this game, in
particular Genna Frederick who from the libero spot came up with
12 digs.
Callie Davis and freshman Alyssa Oblinger had standout games
for the Lady Blue Thunder.
Three Stroud aces and two Hyland kills helped Belvidere jump
off to a 6-0 lead in the first game. North, which fell behind 15-6,
battled back to within a pair, 19-17, on Davis’ kill.
But five unforced errors and Brown’s kill cemented the Lady
Bucs win.
Belvidere went on a 7-0 run in the second game to stretch an
8-5 lead to 15-5. The rally was keyed by Hyland with three aces,
Brown with two blocks and a kill, and Ford with a kill.
North’s Davis spiked home two points to narrow the deficit to
20-12, but two unforced errors, two kills by Hyland and Stroud’s
service ace made it 24-12.
Katie Carroll, wearing No. 25, scored the Lady Bucs’ 25th
point with a kill.
Late last week Belvidere entertained powerhouse Rockford
Boylan and lost, 25-13, 25-11. Boylan had most of its players back
from last year’s team, which took second in the NIC-10 with a
15-1 record.
Sophomore Football
Two Belvidere High School football teams have made
statements for future success in the NIC-10.
First, the freshman squad knocked off perennial heavyweight
Hononegah, 28-14, on Sept. 3.
The following evening the sophomore team, playing some of
the same freshmen who were in the previous night’s game, gave
Hononegah plenty to think about before losing a close one, 26-24.
The Buc sophs used the running game to win their opener
against Auburn. But they went to the air against Hononegah, with
freshman quarterback Troy Vandenbroek completing 12 of 22
passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.
It didn’t start all that well with Hononegah, playing to
expectations, running the ball almost exclusively while taking a
12-0 with 45 seconds left in the first half.
But that’s when the Bucs began to build momentum.
Taking over at its own 32, Belvidere launched a four-play, 68yard touchdown drive to close the deficit to 12-6 at halftime.
Play No. 1 was a 19-yard pass across the middle from
Vandenbroek to Raheem Martin.
Play No. 2 was Martin’s spectacular over-the-shoulder catch of
a Vandenbroek pass at the Indian 22 with 11.3 seconds left.
Play No. 3 was Vandenbroek scrambling under pressure and
running to the visitor’s 18, with 3.9 seconds remaining.
Play No. 4 was the scoring pass with Martin leaping to catch
the Vandenbroek toss in the middle of three Hononegah defenders
as time expired. Actually, the ball was in the air when the halfending horn went off.
The two-point conversion failed, but the Bucs were on their
way back.
Continue to Score
What had been a tight defensive battle erupted into a scoring
free-for-all in the second half, with five touchdowns being put on
the board, three by Belvidere.
The Indians made a fundamental mistake by failing to cover
the kickoff to open the third quarter. Jake Mackeben fell on the ball
at the Hononegah 16.
Three plays later Vandenbroek found 6-foot-5-inch Ian Carlson
with a six-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 12-12 just 1:04 into
the quarter.
Hononegah bounced back almost immediately with a nineplay, 73-yard touchdown march, moving ahead 20-12 following
the two-point conversion.
But Belvidere scored the next two touchdowns on big plays
for a 24-20 edge.With the ball at their 25, Vandenbroek passed to
classmate Kane Steger in the left flat and when the Indian defender
fell down, Steger was off on a 75-yard scoring romp. The point
after touchdown (PAT) failed, leaving the difference at 20-18 with
3:50 left in the third period.
After a Hononegah punt, the Bucs started at their own 11 and
moved to the 34. There, Vandenbroek teamed with Martin on a
fly pattern down the left sideline, hitting the fleet running back in
stride for a 66-yard scoring strike.
That made it 24-20 Belvidere with 7:35 left in the game.
Hononegah came back one more time, however, fashioning a
59-yard scoring drive that was capped by a five-yard run with just
2:25 remaining. That PAT also failed, leaving the score at 26-24.
The Bucs managed to move from their 31 to the Hononegah 44
but ran out of downs as time expired.
Martin wound up being Vandenbroek’s favorite receiver,
catching six passes for 139 yards and the two touchdowns. Steger
caught five balls for 133 yards and one score, while Carlson had
two receptions for 11 yards and one TD.
On the ground, Vandenbroek carried six times for 24 yards;
Martin ran four times for 16 yards.
Defensively, Dalton Danielson had two tackles for losses,
while Max Hendrickson and Martin had one each. Luke Hearn
blocked one pass at the line of scrimmage.

Police Blotter
Belvidere Police Department
Gang-related graffiti was reported outside the United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offices at 211
North Appleton Road on September 4. Officers met with
an employee of the USDA who called in to report several
symbols sprayed on the building with black spray paint.
A report of shots fired was received by police on
September 5, at about 2:08 a.m. at Burger King. Two
employees told officers they were in the bathroom of the
restaurant when one heard a loud bang. After calling 911
the second employee noticed a bullet hole in a window
on the north side of the building. Neither of the women
saw anyone in the area before hearing the shots. Officers
spoke to an employee of another area business who said
he heard four-to-five shots. He ran outside the store where
he worked and saw a black older-model SUV, possibly a
Chevrolet traveling east and then turning north on Pearl
Street. He also observed three, or possibly, four males
wearing black “hoodies” and white t-shirts jogging toward
Union Avenue from the Burger King. The incident remains
under investigation.
Burglary from a motor vehicle was reported in the 800
block of Caswell Street on August 5. The complainant told
officers that someone had entered his locked 2003 Ford van
and stolen a Panasonic Toughbook laptop computer valued
at $1,100. The van was parked to the rear of the residence
near an alley. There were no signs of forced entry and no
evidence.
On August 5, burglary to a motor vehicle was reported
in the 1700 block of Seventh Avenue. The police met with
the victim who stated that his 2006 Pontiac was parked,
unlocked, in front of his residence overnight. A rented Acer
laptop computer was stolen from the back seat. There was
no sign of forced entry. The rental company was contacted
and advised of the report. Value of the laptop was placed
at $915.
Officers were sent to the area of Sixth and Pearl streets on
September 5 at 10 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian walking
in the street. Officers made contact with a black adult female
who said she did not want to walk on the sidewalk. The
police told her that she had to walk on the sidewalk or she
would receive a ticket. She was told that she would receive
a city ordinance violation. The woman became angry
and tried to leave after being told that she was not free to
leave. She tried to walk away and was later handcuffed and
arrested for obstructing a peace officer. She was mover to
the Boone County Jail, issued a criminal complaint and held
on a $1,000 bond.
Criminal damage to property was reported on September
5 at the N. State Street McDonald’s Restaurant. The
complainant told police that six subjects exited a red
Pontiac and began making threats to him at N. Main and
Perry streets. One subject, a black male approximately
18 years of age approached his vehicle and punched the
passenger side mirror, breaking the glass. The victim said
that he did not know who the subject was, but he and the
others had followed him from Rockford. The case remains
under investigation.
Police answered a report of a stolen vehicle on September
6 at the Applebee’s Restaurant in the Gateway Center Plaza.
Police met with the victim who said that she was hurrying
to get to work. At approximately 5 p.m. she parked her teal,
1995 Subaru Impreza in the south-side parking lot, unlocked,
leaving the keys on the passenger’s side seat. Around 7:40
p.m. three white males between 5-feet-ten-inches and 6-feet
tall, wearing brown baseball
caps were seen entering
the vehicle. One of the
men started the vehicle and
drove south on Genoa Road.
The victim said her car has

On September 6 officers
responded to an incident
of motor vehicle theft in
the 500 block of Poachers
Circle. The complainant told
police he had left his black
1992 Isuzu Rodeo parked
in front of his residence on
September 4 and let for a
trip out of state. Upon his
return he discovered the
vehicle was gone. He told
police that he had left the
vehicle unlocked and the
keys in the center console.
The car had 33-inch tires
and rust around the wheel
wells. The incident remains
under investigation.
Burglary to a motor

met with the victim who said

that she had parked her 2002 Ford Explorer in the driveway
of the residence and returned to find unknown person(s)
had attempted to remove the stereo from the vehicle. The
thieves had taken off the trim and broken the stereo free
from the dash, and the face plate was thrown on the floor.
No damage to the vehicle was reported.
Residential burglary was reported as occurring in
the 1400 block of Douglas Court on September 8. The
victim told officers that sometime between the morning
of September 4 and the evening of September 8, unknown
person(s) entered her residence and stole two televisions
and a Hewlett Packard computer. The keys to her 2002
Chevrolet Suburban were stolen along with the vehicle from
the parking lot. The incident remains under investigation.
Criminal damage to property was reported on September
8 in the 300 block of W. Eighth Street. The victim told
police that he had received a text message from a friend at
approximately 11:30 p.m. telling him not to go outside his
house. He was not home at the time but arrived there at
approximately 11:40 p.m. to find windows of two vehicles
parked in his driveway broken out. The incident remains
under investigation.

Boone County State’s Attorney
A Belvidere man was given 10-year sentence for
burglary and possession of stolen vehicle.
A press release received from Boone County State’s
Attorney Michelle Courier, announced the conviction
of Matthew O’Howell, 29, of Belvidere. O’Howell was
sentenced August 27 to 10 years in prison for residential
burglary and unlawful possession of a stolen motor
vehicle.
The court determined that O’Howell had entered into a
Belvidere home through an unlocked back door and stolen
the owner’s checkbook and proceeded to a detached garage
where stole the owner’s Dodge Caliber.

The Roads and Capital Improvements Committee recessed their September 1 meeting
until Wednesday, September 16 at 5:45 p.m. and will meet in the Lower Level Conference
Room in the Boone County Courthouse, 601 N. Main St., Belvidere, Ill.
Help a local 16-year-old boy with a rare brain disorder obtain a service dog by attending
a spaghetti dinner hosted and presented by Monroe Center Community Church on Friday,
September 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Monroe Center Firefighters Hall, 104 West Street, Monroe
Center, Ill. Sixteen-year-old Eric House, who a freshman at Belvidere North High School,
attends special education classes and communicates through sign language. Eric was born
with Lissencephaly, a rare brain malformation that causes seizures, severe psychomotor
retardation and other symptoms, which can be create life-threatening falls. The Monroe
Center Community Church voted to purchase a dog for Eric from Amazing Tails, a not-forprofit 501 (c) (3) organization in Oxford, Pennsylvania, that trains rescue dogs for people
with physical disabilities. A service dog that is specifically trained to alert that there is an
impending seizure can save his life. Checks may be made to The Monroe Center Community

Racing for RAMP finals during Rockford Speedway’s Whelen Engineering Championship
on Saturday, September 12 at the Rockford Speedway! There will be an awards ceremony
in the VIP tent following the racing. RAMP empowers people with disabilities to realize
that there are no limits to what they can do. To support this vision, Racing for Ramp was
started four years ago to allow people the opportunity to achieve their need for speed by
allowing them to ride with a race car driver around the track at the Rockford Speedway. For

Each year, countless high school girls find it hard to afford the increasingly high cost of
attending formal dances. Becca’s Closet donates new and gently worn formal dresses free
of charge to high school girls who would be unable to afford to attend their homecomings,
proms and military balls without their help. The distribution site in Boone County is at
Belvidere High School in Room 233. Girls must present a current high school identification
or proof of enrollment at the time of their appointments. Becca’s Closet works on the honor
system and does not require formal proof of financial need. There are more than 200 dresses
in stock from which to choose. Becca’s Closet will be open Monday-Friday, 3-3:30 p.m.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford will host a College Classics
car show on Sunday, September 13 at the Parkview Campus in Rockford. Proceeds from the

Volunteers Sought for
H1N1 Immunization

Assistant administrator of the Boone County Health Department, Stephanie Seaworth
appeared at the Thursday meeting of the Boone County Board Health and Human Services
Committee with a plea for help. She was accompanied by several members of the Boone
County Board of Public Health who also presented their requested budget to the Boone
County Board Finance Committee.
“There have been 11 cases of confirmed H1N1 influenza in the county,” said Seaworth.
“The incidents are no longer being reported unless the person is hospitalized.” She told
the committee that she intends to use volunteers as much as possible but that if they are
overwhelmed or unable to find enough, the county may have to consider hiring temporary
healthcare personnel.
Those afflicted thus far with the H1N1 virus are a middle-age female, an infant, and
school-age children.
“Regular influenza kills thousands of people a year,” said Seaworth. “If it hits we’ve got
to be ready. The county, the health department, the schools, have to be vaccinated.” She
noted that the vaccine seems to be on track, and according to Seaworth, the H1N1 strain
has not been as dangerous to the population as the ordinary seasonal strain of flu to date.
Seaworth strongly urges people to get their annual flu shot. She also noted that the county
protocol would be for special-risk groups to be vaccinated first.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) notes on their website, “Flu activity is increasing
in parts of the United States. So far, most flu is 2009 H1N1 (sometimes called “swine flu.”)
The CDC is preparing for an early flu season and expects 2009 H1N1 flu and seasonal flu to
cause illness, hospital stays and deaths.
County board representative Cathy Ward (District 2) asked for details on the groups at
greatest risk from the H1N1 strain.
On September 9, the CDC met to develop recommendations on who should receive the
vaccine against novel influenza A (H1N1) when it becomes available.
According to the website, they also determined which groups of the population should
be prioritized if the vaccine is initially available in extremely limited quantities.
From the CDC website: “The committee recommended the vaccination efforts focus on
five key populations. The key populations include those who are at higher risk of disease
or complications, those who are likely to come in contact with novel H1N1, and those who
could infect young infants.
When the vaccine is first available, the committee recommends that programs and
providers try to vaccinate those at greatest risk, especially pregnant women; people who live
with or care for children younger than 6 months; healthcare and emergency medical services
personnel; persons between the ages of 6 months through 24 years of age; and people from
ages 25 through 64 years who are at higher risk for novel H1N1 because of chronic health
disorders or compromised immune systems. The groups listed total approximately 159
million people in the United States.
Also according to the CDC, both immunizations can be given on the same day.
County board representative Marshall Newhouse (District 1) noted that he had attended
a meeting with Department on Aging officials. “At the meeting, did I understand from any
source that once we get into the thick of things, there could be an increase by three-fold
daily?” asked Newhouse.
According to Seaworth, there’s the opinion of the media and the CDC and then there’s
what happens locally. “There is no predictability as to what is happening in South America,”
Seaworth said. “What is not predictable is the virulence of the strain.”
“The number of confirmed cases is not a true picture,” Seaworth said. “There are cases of
people with influenza-type cases. They are saying it is influenza-like... we can’t really go by
the number of confirmed cases because they are only testing people who are hospitalized.”
The H1N1 will not be shipped to us until October, Seaworth told the committee. “The
health department intends to vaccinate the at-risk populations as identified before,” she
said.
Ward asked if there is a way to know the difference between H1N1 and a cold or regular
flu.
“You don’t,” said Seaworth. “If I see a case and the person is not that sick, I am not
going to go through the process because it’s not cost-efficient. There are many different
viruses out there that have similar symptoms.”
Seaworth did tell the group that H1N1 has a rapid onset with regular flu-like symptoms.
“The main issue is fever,” she said. “Currently the virus is not killing as many people as the
regular flu.”

Flu clinics are for children 6 months of age through adult. Flu shots are also available
at the health department walk-in clinics on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. The

Bucs Homecoming Plans
Belvidere High School is gearing up for Homecoming, with a variety of activities
planned starting September 17.
The powder puff football game, featuring male cheerleaders performing at halftime, will
kick off at 5:30 p.m. September 23 at Funderburg Stadium.
Admission is $2 per person.
The annual Homecoming parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. September 24, starting at the
Community building with fireworks to follow.
Belvidere’s Bucs will take on Freeport the evening of September 25, with the sophomore
game at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow at about 7:15 p.m. The 2009 Homecoming Court
will be unveiled at halftime of the sophomore game, with the coronation of the king and
queen.
The highlight of the Homecoming celebration will be the annual Homecoming dance
from 8 until 11 p.m. in the main gym at the high school.
Students will have special days at school throughout Homecoming week, dressing up for
different occasions, such as:
September 17, Stoplight Day. Those having a date wear red, those who aren’t sure wear
yellow, and those who are available wear green.
September 18, Clash/Mismatch Day. That means wearing clothes that normally would
not be worn together.
September 21, Class Color Day, seniors wear green; juniors, orange; sophomores, blue;
freshmen, red; and faculty, white.
September 22, Neon Day, all will get decked out in neon colors.
September 23, Super Hero Day. Students dress as their favorite hero.
September 24, International Day. Students wear attire from their favorite country.
September 25 is Purple and Gold Day, to show that Buc spirit!
