JICNY has demonstrated significant growth in just a few years.
Young Jews who move to the City are attracted to our distinctive and relevant programs,
helping them explore their identity within a familiar context. All of our programming is
grassroots driven and led by committed leadership and volunteers from all over the world.
It might be a big event but it will also be a personal experience. We imbed in our programs
a unified “home away from home” family atmosphere, connecting and helping a community of individuals and young couples with no local infrastructure to:

Dear JICNY community,
Welcome, esteemed guests,
to JICNY’s ninth Annual JICNY Gala, featuring an international musical festival that will
interweave the sounds, sights, smells, and tastes of cultures across the globe into tonight’s celebration. Tonight’s gala is the embodiment of what JICNY is all about: celebrating Judaism
together through the lenses of cultures around the world.
JICNY began nearly 13 years ago around a Shabbat table in New York. The humble group of
Australian and South African Jews who came together that first night has grown to encompass
over 10,000 people hailing from over 40 countries. While Shabbat dinners remain a staple
of JICNY’s calendar, other activities range from Torah classes in multiple languages, to a
film club, to wine and cheese events, to an Israel advocacy program, to cooking classes, to
networking with fellow Jews, to name a few. In fact we run over 200 events a year. We are
proud to have celebrated 94 couples who have met and married through us.
JICNY’s mission is to foster Jewish identity among young Jews through diverse and inspiring
Jewish experiences through:
•
•
•
•
Jewish educational, cultural, and Shabbat/holiday experiences
Professional and social networking opportunities
Couples and parenting programs
Israel advocacy programs
Tonight, we invite you to help us achieve our mission by enjoying the ninth annual gala to the
fullest.
Thank you for joining us, for being instrumental to our success, and we hope that you will
continue to support our mission.
Jodi & Gavin Samuels, Steve Eisenberg
Welcome to our ninth Annual JICNY Gala, a truly international
musical celebration reelecting the united community of so many
connected cultures that makes JICNY such a hit!
With more than 10,000 international Jews from more than 40
countries including Great Britain, Mexico, Iran, Singapore, and
South Africa attending our events and classes, we are truly a
world-class organization.
The Pew Research Center released a major survey this month which sought to paint a portrait of what
it means to be Jewish in America. The report offered some positive news, such as the fact that 85% of
Jews say they have “a strong sense of belonging to the Jewish people.” And despite the biased coverage
about Israel in the media, a strong majority of Jews maintain an emotional attachment to Israel.
However the survey also offers some sobering statistics that should concern all of us. While 93% of
older Jews “identify as Jewish on the basis of religion, only 68% of younger “millennials” say the same.
Experts are warning that based on demographic trends, this troublesome slide is likely to continue, at
an increasingly faster pace.
But there’s hope. The study points to some things that can be done to put us on a better trajectory. The
survey documents the facts that those who identify culturally or religiously as Jewish, (regardless of
level of observance), are most likely to remain affiliated, as are their offspring, especially if they marry
other Jews.
Sounds simple enough, but fostering those connections to being Jewish requires some effort, for both
American-born Jews, as well as for Jews from around the world who leave their home country, not for
Israel, but for the melting pot that is New York.
If the Pew survey were to offer concrete suggestions, or a blueprint, to improve our future, it would
look a lot like JICNY’s 2013 calendar of events — just not as detailed, and probably with a lot less wine!
From torah classes that teach the weekly portion, to cooking classes that offer tasty portions, JICNY’s
vast educational programming offers something Jewish for everyone. From drinks on a rooftop, rafting
on a river, or a road trip to DC, we are the home for fun activities that bring together Jews from dozens
of countries. But some of our best events aren’t just for fun. We encourage and sponsor volunteerism,
bringing together people with diverse backgrounds for a unifying cause. JICNY volunteers serve meals
to needy senior citizens, study and engage in pro-Israel activism, and ... some of our volunteers may
have even called you at home earlier this month to remind you to join us tonight.
The people who participate in our events, and those of you who are here to support us, are the answer
to a strengthened Jewish people going forward. We didn’t need a survey to tell us that, we’ve been
doing it for nearly a decade.
Tonight we celebrate our accomplishments together with the optimism that with your generosity, we
can continue to advance the vision of JICNY’s founders, Jodi and Gavin Samuels, and Steve Eisenberg.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire JICNY community, I thank you for joining us, and
for being a part of our growing success.

Meet the JICNY 2013 Honorees
Berel Fischler, Dedication to Jewish Life Award
Berel was born in New York and raised in suburban
Chicago. After an extended yeshiva education he
returned to Chicago to follow his passion for food in
culinary school at Triton College. Upon graduating Berel
took his talents to New York where he joined Prestige
Caterers. Seventeen years later he is still with Prestige
as Director of Sales and Creative Development.
Berel has become synonymous with upscale kosher
catering and event planning throughout the tri-state area. It is in this capacity
that Berel has developed strong personal ties with countless Jewish
organizations including AIPAC, AJHS, American Friends of Migdal Ohr, American
Friends of Shalva, Center for Jewish History, CAMERA, Chabad, FIDF, Gift of
Life Bone Marrow Foundation, Jewish Center of Manhattan, JFNA, JNF, MJE,
National Folksbiene Yiddish Theater, One Israel Fund, Solomon Schechter, UJA,
YIVO and of course JICNY.
Berel continues to be a generous participant and supporter of several charitable
causes. Observing his parents donating their time, effort and finances
anonymously as a child highlighted the value of such contributions. With these
instilled values, in addition to his experience as an event planner, Berel is
accustomed to his role behind the scenes, a role which he prefers. Berel is both
humbled and enthusiastic about his first foray into the philanthropic limelight.
Feliks Frenkel, Tower of Light Award
Feliks Frenkel was born in Kiev, Ukraine. He studied civil
engineering at the Siberian Automobile and Road Institute
in Omsk (University of Siberia). He immigrated to the
United States in 1977 with his family. He is a graduate of
University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business
and Stern Business School. Feliks initiated his professional
career as a research analyst at Bear, Stearns & Co. He
then joined OTA Limited Partnership where he became the
Senior Managing General Partner of risk arbitrage
department. Currently Feliks is Founding Partner and CFO of Money PRO Express.
Based on his family tradition Feliks has played an important role in raising
significant funds for charity causes. He says it best: "I feel that it is my moral
obligation to help others. Then, once I start doing so, I find that giving is addictive,
that the joy of giving is immeasurable." Mr. Frenkel was the first President and
current Board Chairman of the Council of Jewish Émigré Community
Organizations (COJECO). He is a former member of the executive committee of
the UJA-Federation of New York, a current Vice Chairman of the National
Folksbiene Yiddish Theater, and a Board member of FEGS, Metropolitan Council
of Jewish Poverty, Shorefront Y and several other Jewish organizations.
Meet the JICNY 2013 Honorees
Lev Grzhonko, Tower of Light Award
Lev was born in Moscow and moved to the United States
in 1990. He graduated from UC Berkeley and followed his
education with a successful career on Wall Street working
with equity and fixed income derivatives. He was a partner
and a founder of two quantitative hedge funds. In 2007
Lev cofounded the digital advertising technology company
AdoTube, which from the humble beginnings grew to 200
employees in 10 countries and 20 offices. The company
was sold in 2011 to Exponential. Currently Lev helps with
integration and guidance of the combined business. Lev is involved in multiple
technology companies as an investor and board member. He enjoys art collecting,
filmmaking and assisting charity organizations.
Sivan Hadari, Young Leadership Award
Sivan is an Israeli-American actress, singer, publicist,
producer and writer. Born in Brooklyn and raised in
Israel, Sivan comes from a rich Jewish and Israeli
cultural background with a mother who was born in
Tunisia and fled the country at the age of 5 and a father
with a Persian background who founded the first theatre
program in Israel that reflected the struggles of the new
Israeli community of that time. Sivan made Aliya at the
age of 12 with her family and has traveled back and forth
from New York to Tel Aviv ever since. She is a graduate of the prestigious Alon
High School for Performing Arts, The Bet Tzvi Conservatory and was a member
of The Masach Rishon Israeli Theatre Company for five years. Sivan also
attended HB Studios and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
In 2009 she founded a grassroots, fiscally sponsored non-profit organization,
ISRAMERICA, with the mission of supporting young Israeli and Jewish American
artists that project a positive image of Israel though art. She was inspired to do so
after she suffered an anti-Semitic occurrence within the confines of one of the
schools she attended. In 2010, Sivan produced the shows NO EXIT, SABRA, A
Daughter of Israel, J-SLAM: Jewish Storytelling and ISRAFEST with Israeli
Superstar Rami Kleinstein. Her one woman show, The Emancipation of the Sassy
Jewish Woman, where she plays 16 different characters won the award for BEST
SOLO DEBUT at The United Solo Festival at Theatre Row and was featured in
numerous theatre festivals across the U.S.
Sivan has served as on site reporter for ShalomTV, reporting on the Jewish
Cultural scene in New York and has been the co-producer for The Sephardic
Music Festival for the past three years. In 2011, her theatrical project; '1,934
Days', inspired by the story of then captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit debuted at
the Times Square International Theatre Festival to rave reviews.
Sivan is proud and honored to be receiving the JICNY Young Leadership Award
and would like to dedicate this award to her family who has always loved and
supported her.

The story of Shilana & Timor
On June 17, 2011, a beautiful and warm sunny day in New York, I was planning to head to the city to attend a JICNY event- an International Shabbaton.
An event that takes place a few times a year. I decided to sign up for this event
about a week or two before, thinking spaces are limited so I should really hurry,
I might miss my opportunity; who knew what was to unfold, only the Almighty,
of course. The interesting story behind this is that, I just recently returned from a
most fascinating and life changing trip from Israel, studying at Neve in Jerusalem for four months. This experience gave me a newfound love and respect for
my faith. So when I returned to New York, I was looking for organizations that
would help me continue this path. Hence, I came across JICNY, upon the recommendation of my Rabbi.
This brings me to the story of how I met Big T, or Timor. On that night, while
heading to the city on the train to the Samuels for the Shabbaton event, I pondered upon the idea, which most girls who go to these events ponder upon, maybe I will meet a nice, handsome mensch of a man who will charm me and whisk
me off my feet! That is sort of what happened. So the night was going well, I
had a great meditative prayer before the meal and dank delicious wine, and I
met some amazing people at my table. The end of the night was approaching
and we all got up from the table to head to the most exciting part of the night,
dessert. That is where it all changed. When I leaned over to grab some pastries,
I could feel someone staring at me, and before I knew it, I met my match. We
looked at each other and the first question that came out of Timor’s mouth was,
“You’re Russian?” I just stood there and thought to myself, “who is this guy?”.
I waited a few seconds before answering, “Yes, how did you know?” .
The rest is history: we kept in touch, he found me on Facebook, we went out every week, and we did not touch each other - not even holding hands for the first
month. (In Judaism it’s called Shomer Negiah. It worked out well, because we
got to really know each other without being blinded by the physicality.) About
four months later, we were engaged and then married on October 24, 2011. Now
we have begun our lives together. So this is a very short version of how we met,
with the stars truly aligned that night.

One summer afternoon of many moons past
Little Berel’s mother called him aside and asked,
“Would you like to make dinner for the family,
Something delicious and yummy?”
“Of course, he replied
I will surely fill your tummies.”
To compete with his sister who had the same task
Berel cut, Berel chopped, Berel’s hands moved so fast
After soup and a salad, here came the entrée
In classic Berel fashion, Chicken flambé!
What began as a passion
Grew into a career
‘Little’ no more
To Berel none can compare
Via the stomach en route to their hearts
Giving, connecting to Jews from all different parts
Fiercely dedicated, creative, and reliable
Nobody works harder than our brother Berel
Your proud siblings,
Rifky and Moti

Shmona, Israel and came to NYC to attend Circle in the Square
theater school on Broadway. In the IDF, he served as a singer
and the commander of the Navy band. He starred in musicals
around Israel, Canada and the United States and won the
second place in the prestigious Israel Song Festival competition.
Following that, he had performed in numerous countries such
as South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany,
Austria, Sweden, in over 23 American States and many more. In
2011 he performed at the Presidents house in Jerusalem, at the
Kenesset in front of the Prime Minister and was the Emcee and
featured soloist at the opening and closing ceremonies of the
JCC Maccabi Games held in Israel. This year he was the host of
the Maccabiah in Israel and sang in Shimon Peres 90th birthday,
together with Barbra Streisand, Shlomo Artzi and Bill Clinton.
Jay is a Beatbox Artist and was a Hollywood Week Finalist on
American Idol. He has continued his Jewish leadership not only
by sitting on the executive committee of PresenTense, but also
through his art - beat-boxing in his Hebrew prayer rap duo, Bagels
n’ Box. The duo’s goal is to make traditional Jewish songs and
Hebrew prayers more accessible to the younger generation. Jay
is the vocal percussionist for a cappella group NYC Sharp and
collaborator with several ensembles around New York City. He
heads up Digital Strategy at Bottlenose, the only real-time trend
detection and social intelligence platform. Jay is an MBA graduate and was a Harvey Beker Scholar of the NYU Stern School of
Business, a 2013 NYC Fellow of Startup Leadesrhip Program and

the contributions of many incredible NY musicians on any given
performance including Gary Gonzalez on drums, John Mistretta
on electric & acoustic guitar & mandolin, Marty Kersich and
Dan Cipriano on sax, Rich Forman, Steve Belfer and Phil Greco
on keyboards, Elana Hayden on background vocals, and Mike
