Pu
raise Jah! For the third
straight year WTUL is puting on Reggae Night at
Tipitina 's as part of the anual
Rock-On Survival Marathon. This
year's 18th annual Marathon
boasts the most promising line-up
yet, featuring The Killer Bees, Chinafrica and Culture, the headliner.
Reggae has gained great popularity in the
nightclubs and
record stores,
despite the
neglect it
receives from
commercial
radio. Its fans
are diehard, buying records and
keeping WTUL's Reggae and Roots
Show (Mondays from 8 p.m. 'til 11
p.m.), one of the most popular
shows on the air. The show is
hosted by Shepard Samuels,
rumored to have the 2nd longestrunning tenure of Reggae jocks in
the world.
With Shepard's help, WTUL has
lured Culture, one of the world's
foremost Reggae acts, to Marathon.
Culture has received acclaim and
recognition by fellow reggae musicians, most notably the late Bob
Marley. Famous c ritic Robert Cristgan gave Culture's LP "T wo Sevens Clash" a grade A-plus.
Culture's style is created by the
rhythmic sound of traditional roots
reggae and the superlative talents
of the three vocalists who combine
to c reate magical harmonies that
could only come from Jamaica, the
home of the members of Culture
and the birthplace of Reggae.
The back-up band for Culture on
thei r U.S. tour goes by the name of
Chinafrica (Chin-uh Free-kuh) and
will perform an hour-l ong set before
the headliner. Chinafrica stages a
highly theatrical performance to
dramatize worldwide issues as
seen in the eyes of Rastafarian
consciousness .
The Killer Bees, originally formed
in Shreveport, La., has emerged as
the premiere American Reggae
band. But because the Bees are
from America doesn't mean they
can't play; they were the only
American band invited to perform in
last year's Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash, and the first to do so in six
years. Take my word for it, they're
hot.
So start your weekend off inna
ru bba dub style on Friday, March
28th, and come down to WTUL's
Reggae Night for the best reggae
you'll be likely to find on this continent anytime soon.

A
n unfortunate fact about
the music scene in New
Orleans is that more local
artists don't get the recognition they
deserve. In a city with a rich musical heritage like ours, we often take
for granted exceptional entertainment that other cities would cherish. Few local fans realize that the
now revered James Booker once
appeared weekly at the Maple Leaf
Bar (or, more accurately, was supposed to appear weekly) . Anyway.
you get the point.
On Saturday, March 26 at Jimmy's club , WTUL is proud to sponsor a New Orleans blues night featuring three local artists who've
been keeping the blues scene hot
for quite some time.
Starting things off will be a collection of blues afficionados known
collectively at the New Orleans
Blues Department, or simply
NOBD. Though not active as a single band, the members of NOBD
are all seasoned veterans of the
New Orleans music scene.

WTUL broadcasts its own blues
shows, featuring the very best in
blues from such classic performers
as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters
and Howlin Wolf, all the way to
modern heirs like Robert Cray,
Roomful! of Blues and Stevie Ray
Vaughn . In addition to these artists,
New Orleans legends Professor
Longhair, Johnny Adams and
James Booker are frequently

n the early 70's a new musical
term was invented. The term
Heavy Metal was applied to
such bands as Black Sabbath,
Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin,
among others. Their sound was
built around a heavily distorted guitar mixed with pounding bass and
drums, screeching loud vocals, and
song lyrics from the bowels of hell.
But you knew all that.
In the early

bands like Def

metalheads, though, this just wasn 't
good enough
Mixing the speed of hard core
with the power and precision of
heavy metal, the results were mind
blowing. They called it Speed
Metal.
At the forefront of this movement
is a band called Megadeth. Formed
by ex-Metallica guitarist Dave Mustane, Megadeth's unique version of
the speed metal sound quickly
established them as one of the very
best bands in this quickly growing
field .
Their second album, "Peace
Sells," was also the second album
by a speed metal band to break the

metal, and the video fa1red surprisingly well on MTV.
Now Megadeth has a new album,
"So Far, So Good, So What," and
are preparing to embark on a headlining tour to support it. The tour,
believe it or not, will begin on
March 28th as Metal Night for
WTUL's Annual Rock On Survival
Marathon. The new album has
been long awaited and well worth
the anticipation. It includes a cover
of the Sex Pistol's classic " Anarchy
1n the U.K. ," (sure to be an amusing
highlight of the live show), along
with many other hard hittmg metal
tunes to help you in relentlessly
throwing your head around.

been stolen or damaged. For this Marathon, we are ask1ng listeners to help us replace these precious vinyl gems. Many are hard to find
or out of print, and each LP has its merits. We're sure you can find one
of your favorites here. Think of us in our time of need-get us a new
copy and drop it off during Marathon.
To show you exactly how muc h we appreciate it, on top of the quality
tunes you'll be hearing year 'round, we'll give you a copy of any one of
the albums we happen to have lying around our executive offices in
return for your good deed. In the meantime, enjoy the 18th Marathon!
