Kinderszenen & Waldszenen
Marc-André Hamelin
Marc-André presents a fascinating juxtaposition of two composers who are not obviously
musically related, but who are proved on this album to be a felicitous combination.
CDA68030
A French Baroque Diva
Arias for Marie Fel
Carolyn Sampson
Ex Cathedra, Jeffrey Skidmore
A welcome return of Carolyn Sampson and Ex Cathedra to Hyperion, performing the rich, fulsome
music of the French Baroque. Their recording of love songs from Rameau’s operas (Hyperion
CDA67447) was hugely acclaimed for Sampson’s stylish, fluid, seductive performances, and ten years
later her artistry is even more dazzling.

Songs for the Habsburg Court
Cinquecento
A new departure for the wonderful all-male vocal ensemble Cinquecento. They turn to the secular music—
generally much less well-known—of the Renaissance masters Philippe de Monte, Jacobus Vaet and Jacob
Regnart whose sacred music they have explored so successfully in previous recordings for Hyperion. Also
included are six chansons by Jean Guyot de Châtelet. This collection is both historically fascinating and
stunningly performed.
CDA68053

Les saisons Op. 37b
Six morceaux Op. 19
Pavel Kolesnikov
Pavel Kolesnikov became Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano in 2012 and gave his Wigmore Hall
debut at the beginning of 2013. In his five-star review for The Daily Telegraph, John Allison praised
the Russian-born, London-based artist for his recital’s ‘intelligent programming and outstanding
pianism … one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed’.

CDA67969
Lawrence Power is Britain’s greatest living viola player, the true successor to Lionel Tertis and
William Primrose. Part of his mission is to perform and record music premiered by those masters
of the previous century, including works by York Bowen, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Dale,
William Walton and, here, Arthur Benjamin.

the world’s leading clarinetists.

Jorge GRUNDMAN
A Mortuis Resurgere
The Resurrection of Christ
Susana Cordón, Brodsky Quartet
Jorge Grundman uses his unique compositional voice to create music which communicates with
remarkable directness. The simplicity and strength of his artistic vision, intended to reach the widest

Jean SIBELIUS
Lemminkäinen Suite Op. 22; The Wood-Nymph Op. 15
Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä
The source of the Lemminkäinen Suite is the Finnish national epic Kalevala, and its four movements
tell of the adventures of the young hero Lamminkäinen. The Wood-Nymph had its first complete
performance in 1996. This was given by the performers on this disc, a team which has become
synonymous with top-flight idiomatic Sibelius performances.
BIS1745

Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op. 115; Six Songs for clarinet and piano; Clarinet Trio in A minor Op. 114

Janine Jansen, Boris Brovtsyn, Maxim Rysanov, Torleif Thedéen, Roland Pöntinen
Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet is core repertoire, not just for clarinettists but also in the entire chamber music
genre. Once again, (BIS1893), Fröst gathers exceptional artists in their own right for this recording.

The young British pianist, Clare Hammond, is greatly involved in events for the Panufnik Centenary in
2014 and has devised the present disc as her debut release on BIS. She has chosen to include two works

Excelsior! Symphonic overture Op. 13; Mellanspel ur Sången Op. 44; Serenade in F major Op. 31
Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Christian Lindberg
The symphonic overture Excelsior!, written for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1896, was
composed only four years after Stenhammar made his début as a composer. Stenhammar had not
yet entirely found his own voice, but the work displays an infectious exuberance and enthusiasm,
contrasting with the more reflective ‘Interlude’ from the composer’s final large-scale work, the cantata
Sången from 1921.

These three early piano works – two of them receiving their first-ever recordings – reveal Shapero’s superb
craftsmanship and his ready wit, in music which embraces the past instead of rejecting it. The result is an
extraordinary fusion between the Viennese classics – not least late Beethoven – and contemporary America.

The Oriental Song-Cycles
Michael Halliwell
David Miller
Her song-cycle Four Indian Love Lyrics of 1902 contains the ‘Kashmiri Song’ (it begins ‘Pale hands I loved beside
the Shalimar’) that became a runaway success in its own day. Her five other ‘oriental’ song-cycles, which have
long since fallen from favour and are revived here for the first time, contain plenty of honest sentiment, good
tunes and splashes of local colour.

The Complete Vianna da Motta Transcriptions
Vincenzo Maltempo
Emanuele Delucchi
The Portuguese piano virtuoso and composer José Vianna da Motta (1868–1948) understood the importance
of Alkan’s music long before its current rise to prominence. He made a number of transcriptions to foster its
performance, arranging eight of the organ Prières for solo piano and some of the music for pédalier – the obsolete
pedal-piano – for piano duo and duet.

Thomas Hardy
Virginia WOOLF
The Woodlanders (Unabridged)
The Waves (Unabridged)
Read by Stephen Thorne
Read by Frances Jeater
The Woodlanders revolves around
the young woman Grace Melbury,
who returns to the leafy world
of Little Hintock and soon finds
herself at the centre of a

number of tragic events. In
penetrating and beautiful
prose, Hardy tells a moving tale of unrequited love and the
thwarted happiness of our heroine.
The Waves traces the lives of
six friends from childhood to
old age. It was written when
Virginia Woolf
was at the

height of her
experimental
powers, and she allows each character to tell their
own story through powerful, poetic monologues.

His music betrays the same spirit of contrariness that inspired his numerous feature articles, papers and novels.

The music of late-Romantic composer Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) – though quite well known in her
time – fell into near-total neglect after she stopped composing in 1919. Delos now offer her beautifully crafted
and appealing choral music, in the hope of restoring Lang to her rightful place among America’s most remarkable
composers.

during his thirteen years with the orchestra he explored a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque
