The Canyon
“Heaven is under our feet
as well as over our heads.”
-Henry David Thoreau
More than any other feature, Arizona is defined by
canyons. All across the state, these great gorges in the
landscape harbor scenery and secrets. Besides the Grand,
an array of other unforgettable canyons invites exploration and one of the most spectacular is Verde Canyon.
Take a moment to imagine Sedona and its world-famous
landscape without the development. Imagine the same
towering red rock buttes and haunting formations but
with no roads or resorts, no homes or hotels. You’ve just
conjured up an image of Verde Canyon.
Carved by the Verde River, Verde Canyon is a verdant
ribbon through unrepentant desert. High cliff walls
adorned with cactus and agave overlook this splashy
oasis, while graceful cottonwoods and sycamores canopy
the water. Such collision of ecosystems lures a variety
of wildlife, a fur and feather roster that makes Verde
Canyon Railroad the envy of other excursion trains
and adventure tours.
This bewitching scenery forms an unforgettable
backdrop for the slow-rolling journey of Verde
Canyon Railroad.
“Everybody needs beauty as well as
bread, places to play in and pray
in, where nature may heal and
give strength to body and soul.”

The Eagles
“The Eagle, he was Lord above.”
-William Wordsworth
Eagles are the most majestic of birds and among the
shyest. The American bald eagle is extremely sensitive to
human activity and chooses nesting sites where it cannot
be easily observed by people ... with one notable exception.
They get along just fine with the passengers and crew of
Verde Canyon Railroad.
Each winter migrating bald and golden eagles return
to Verde Canyon, joining the year-round resident pairs.
The rocky red cliffs of the pristine river canyon form
a dramatic backdrop for dazzling aerial acrobatics.
Eagles plunge from staggering heights into the river to
snatch fish from the crystal green waters. They can be
seen soaring overhead on gentle thermals, their six-foot
wingspans etched against a piercingly blue sky.
Passengers of Verde Canyon Railroad are granted the
rare privilege of witnessing these magnificent creatures
up close and undisturbed. Verde Canyon is a protected
breeding area closed to the public. Only Verde Canyon
Railroad provides the unique opportunity to view these
extraordinary animals in their natural habitat. Having
cohabited with the Railroad for generations, the eagles
pay no mind as the slow rolling train clickety-clacks its
way to Perkinsville and back.
As an added treat, resident pairs produce offspring almost
yearly, giving passengers a chance to watch eaglets fledge
the nest and dip their downy wings into the sky.
Eagle Facts
• Arizona is home to the entire
known population of desert
nesting bald eagles in the
United States.
• During courtship bald eagles
engage in elaborate flight
displays that include swoops,
chases and cartwheels. They
often lock talons at great
heights then free fall,
separating just before hitting
the ground.
• The bald eagle is the only
eagle unique to North America.
• The nest of a bald eagle can
weigh as much as 2,000 pounds.
• The bald eagle is the
national symbol of the United
States and is found on the
presidential seal, money and
stamps.

The Adventure
“Life is either a great adventure or nothing.”
-Helen Keller
During the past two decades, over a million passengers have
ventured into the untamed heart of the great American
West riding Verde Canyon Railroad.
The three and one-half hour journey aboard this classic and
elegant train curls deep into one of Arizona’s most dramatic
canyons, a riparian corridor tucked between two national
forests and adjacent to a wilderness area. With high rock
walls cradling a glistening river, Verde Canyon provides a
sanctuary for wildlife and frazzled humans looking to experience the kind of place they didn’t think still existed.
Along the way the train rumbles past ancient Sinagua Indian
cliff dwellings, past the nests of bald eagles perched on high
rock escarpments and through a 680-foot tunnel blasted
from the mountainside. The sprawling panoramas of the
varied landscapes, timeless; the unmatched comfort and service of the train, priceless.
A handful of excursion trains still
crisscross the country and provide
pleasant diversions. Verde
Canyon Railroad delivers the
frontier, the Wild West, the scenic
West and the West of legend
which flows slowly past the train.
Passengers relax in grand comfort
as the train rumbles into terrain
where eagles swoop from windgnawed cliffs, wildlife graze at the
edge of the cottonwood trees and
fierce sunsets streak the sky.
It has always been about the
journey, not the destination.

The History
“Railroad iron is a magician’s rod,
in its power to evoke the sleeping
energies of land and water.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
It was the mines that lured them but it was the
railroad that brought them.
The railroads of north central Arizona were built
to support the booming copper mines of Jerome.
Despite an inaccessible location, mining in Jerome
grew into large scale operations soon after the first
claim was staked in 1876. Men and equipment were
needed and large quantities of ore had to be shipped.
The railroads conquered the unforgiving landscape
and fed Jerome, Clarkdale and the communities of
the Verde Valley. In 1911 William Andrews Clark
financed construction of the Verde Valley Railroad,
a 38-mile standard gauge line from Clarkdale to
Drake. It took 250 men using picks, shovels and
DuPont black powder one year to complete the task.
An astonishing feat, especially considering that the
line includes a 680-foot tunnel carved through a
mountain and a trestle spanning a 175-foot gorge,
aptly named S.O.B. Canyon. For years the
railroad was known as the “Verde Mix” because
it carried such a variety of freight, livestock,
passengers and ore.
In 1988 Dave Durbano purchased the
Verde Valley line sight unseen, based just
on freight figures alone. After his first
ride through the unspoiled wilderness, he
knew that this was a treasure, both scenic
and historic that must be shared. Verde
Canyon Railroad was born.
The first excursion train of Verde
Canyon Railroad rolled out of the
Clarkdale depot on November 23, 1990.
It carried neither freight nor ore, only
people. They came to bask in the beauty
of a wild canyon where eagles nest
among high cliffs and the wind makes
music in the cottonwoods.
It is the scenery that lures them but it is
the railroad that brings them.

The Food
“I am not a glutton—I am an explorer of food.”
-Erma Bombeck
In railroad jargon it’s known as “going to beans” or
“putting on the nosebag,” but most people just call it eating
lunch. For Verde Canyon Railroad passengers it’s as easy
as walking up to the counter at the Copper Spike Cafe
located in the depot.
Individual Purchases
The Copper Spike dishes up burgers and hot dogs fresh
off the grill. Burly sandwiches and overstuffed wraps are
prepared fresh daily along with crispy salads and tempting desserts. Gourmet coffees, teas and bottled drinks will
whet your train whistle. Passengers who prefer to dine
prior to departure can grab a table on the shady veranda
with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, or a
picnic-style lunch can be prepared to take on the train.
First-class Amenities
On board, passengers riding in first-class or on the
caboose enjoy a lavish spread of appetizers, Champagne
upon boarding and a cash bar. Coach passengers have
access to a well-stocked snack bar.
Group Purchases
The culinary wizards at the Copper Spike Cafe can handle
any group request with a little advance notice. Pre-ordered
lunches can be made available upon arrival with several
options from which to choose. For any lunch order of 20
or more, the driver and escort will each receive a
complimentary lunch.
After the Train Ride
For groups looking to extend their outing into the evening,
the staff at Verde Canyon Railroad can book a package
with the nearby Blazin’ M Ranch Wild West Adventure.
After the train chugs into the depot, we invite you to enjoy
the best chicken and ribs in Arizona followed by a professional Western stage show. Ask your representative about
special rates.
“When the waitress asked if
I wanted my pizza cut in four
or eight slices I said, ‘Four. I
don’t think I can eat eight.’”

R a i l r o a d
Where
The train departs from the historic
town of Clarkdale in the Verde Valley. Nestled at the base of Cleopatra
Hill, Clarkdale occupies an ideally
centralized location for any exploration.
Clarkdale is only three miles from the
Blazin’ M Ranch in Cottonwood, four
miles from the former mining camp
turned artist colony of Jerome and 25
miles from the scenic red rock splendor
of Sedona.
What
Two FP7 locomotives, two of only 10
remaining in North America, provide
the muscle that pulls the renovated
vintage cars. First-class accommodations offer spacious living room-style
seating, beverages for toasting upon
boarding, complementary appetizers
and service at your seat. Coach service
includes classic Pullman-style seats
and a convenient snack bar. All cars
have access to open-air viewing cars
offering dramatic 360-degree views
and photo opportunities. The exclusive
caboose is designed for one private
party of no more than six adults and
features oversized chairs, sumptuous
appetizers, a personal valet and two
private viewing platforms.
Who
Your group of course; your family and
friends, your coworkers, your employees, your special guests. Anyone who
is important to you is important to us.
Even after 20 years, the Verde Canyon
Railroad still prizes passenger comfort
as an essential part of the journey.

The Towns
Jerome teeters a mile in the air, spackled
into the seams of Mingus Mountain, overlooking the red rocks of Sedona and lush
Verde Valley. The vertical burg established
boomtown credentials back when the copper
mines churned out a billion dollars worth of
the gaudy ore. World War II marked the last
copper boomlet as Jerome fell into disrepair.
When the mines closed in 1953, the citizens
scattered except for a few dozen hearty souls
who stayed put. They formed a historical society and began patching the scars and knitting
the bones of this tumbledown town. During the 1960s, Jerome experienced a
counterculture renaissance as people
discovered the hillside town with remnants
of Victorian architecture. They snapped up
real estate, opened shops, restaurants, art
galleries and injected Jerome with the
relaxed, carefree vibe still prevalent. Today,
vistors prowl the slanted streets discovering
a bonanza of original artwork.
Clarkdale - named after William A.
Clark - was Arizona’s first company town and
designed with precision planning and technological advancements far from the norm in the
early 1900s. The community of sturdy brick
homes in varying architectural styles included
modern conveniences such as electricity, sewer
and copper water piping.
A century after being built, Clarkdale seems
to exist in a time warp. It exudes a small-town
Mayberry-like charm rarely found anymore.
The quaint downtown houses restaurants,
shops, museum and two-acre park with a
gazebo that serves as the site of festivals,
celebrations and other community events.
Nearby Attractions
Tuzigoot National Monument – an
800-year-old Sinagua Indian pueblo

Montezuma Castle National Monument –
one of the most well-preserved ancient
cliff dwellings in North America located in Camp Verde.
Sedona and the surrounding red rock
country, named by USA Today as the most
beautiful place in America, is a half

Planning Guide
Now that you’ve caught the train what are you
going to do with it? With a little advance planning, your group - whether family and friends,
employees or VIP guests - can do pretty much
anything they want.
Thanks to the high level of customer service
provided by Verde Canyon Railroad, you can
create the type of event perfect for your group.
Want a lunch catered on board or on the depot
patio before departure? No problem. Maybe you’d
prefer a barbecue on the patio after the train ride.
We can do that too. If you’re ordering lunches at
the depot, we can print “Welcome (Group Name)”
menus and are happy to set up a courtesy table
with a welcome sign. Special party menus for
birthdays, weddings and corporate functions can
be tailored to any event.
If your group is arriving by bus, we’ll have
someone there to welcome them. Passengers will
be given details on the boarding procedure, what
they might see that day (depending on the season)
and some history and fun facts about the train.
If you’d like specialty beverages served, such
as margaritas, microbrews or wines, just let
us know.
If you’d like cakes, flowers or other special
touches stowed on board prior to your group
boarding, consider it done. We’ll also send
out photos of your group’s visit via CD
or email.
If you’re looking for specialty logo souvenirs
and other group gift items, they can be preordered from the gift shop at discounted prices.
And that’s just the beginning. If there’s something else we can do to make your group’s
experience a memorable one, all you have to
do is ask. Anything short of letting you drive
the train, we can probably make happen.

Wedding
Fun Facts
The expression “tying the
knot” dates to Roman times,
when the bride wore a girdle
that was tied in knots—which
the groom then had the fun
of untying.
Legend says that if the
younger of two sisters
marries first, the older
sister must dance barefoot
at the wedding or risk never
finding a husband.
The longest train for a
wedding dress was made in
Germany and measured
515 feet.

The Train
Not many adults long for the days of the stagecoach,
steamship and blimp. But mention “trains” and eyes
light up. Unlike some historical eras that seem far
removed from modern lives, the casual grace of train
travel never goes out of style. The rarer it becomes,
the more precious it becomes.
Vintage FP7 diesel locomotives provide the power for
17 cars that travel Verde Canyon Railroad’s standard
gauge rails. Engines 1510 and 1512 were built in 1953
for Alaska Railroad. Today, painted with eye-catching
eagle designs, they are only two of 10 remaining in
service in North America.
All cars are non-smoking, climate-controlled,
have restrooms and at least one attendant per car.
Music and narration are an integral part of the
trip. Two coach-class cars feature the classic
Pullman-style padded seating on each side of a center
aisle with panoramic windows and a snack bar. Eight
first-class cars offer a rich living room-style
arrangement nestled against panoramic windows, with
Champagne upon boarding, premium liquors from a
cash bar and complimentary appetizers reflecting the
Southwestern region. All cars provide access to
open-air viewing cars with high-backed
wooden benches. (Don’t be surprised if that’s where
you spend most of the ride.)
The eye-catching red caboose at the
end of the rolling stock line-up has been
converted into a luxurious parlor car.
The caboose is limited to no more than
six adults of one party. These fortunate
passengers will enjoy elegant seating,
panoramic windows, a personal valet,
sumptuous appetizers and Champagne
upon boarding. They also have access to
two private outdoor viewing platforms
and two cupola seats above.
“If God had meant for us to fly,
he wouldn’t have given us
the railways.”
