Lucia Devine
Everybody at NPW is very sorry to hear of the passing of Lucia (Loo) Devine who has passed away after a short
illness. She will be missed by all those she worked with in NPW, schools and elsewhere in Newham. Our thoughts
and sympathies are with her family and friends.
Ranelagh pupils hit the right note
Newham School receives the Music Mark
Congratulations to Ranelagh
Primary School for becoming a
member of Music Mark, the
National Association for Music
Education.
This prestigious award means that
Ranelagh has been recognised for
valuing music education as part of a
broad, balanced curriculum and the
staff demonstrate a willingness to
develop and improve music
provision for all children. William
Woodhouse accepted the accolade
saying: "Music has a prominent
place at the heart of the curriculum
at Ranelagh, where we aim to
inspire a future generation of
creative, dedicated and skilled
musicians."

One of the exciting benefits of this
membership is Music Mark's 'Peerto-Peer Network' which is a
supportive online space for sharing

Ranelagh is also pleased to take
part in the Newham Mayor's
initiative, 'Every Child a Musician'
programme (ECaM), which ensures
that all year 5 children in the
borough have access to free
instruments and regular term time
tuition. Anas, year 6, said: "I love
ECaM as it has given me and the
other children at school the
opportunity to discover music and
learn something that I wouldn't
have even thought about before."
The pupils’ sessions include musical
instruction, how to read music and
the history of their chosen
instrument. Children are also
permitted to take their instruments
home to practise and they are

Ranelagh School curriculum and we
provide a specialist music room,
with a fantastic array of traditional
and modern musical instruments,
and tuition. The concentration,
motor skills and creativity the
children develop boosts their ability
to learn in other areas of the
curriculum."
Music at Ranelagh
At the end of the Summer term
Ranelagh pupils performed a Queen
-inspired rock extravaganza at the
Stratford Circus, where they
brought the house down, and
earlier in the year they took part in
the Queen's Birthday Celebrations
at the Tower of London. Another
important event in the Ranelagh
Summer calendar is The Festival of
Voices and this year the children
performed, with other Newham
Primary school choirs, at the
Hackney Empire. All of these
experiences are a great opportunity
for the pupils involved to develop
their skills in the performing arts.
Tedy, year 6, added: "ECaM is
amazing, it was hard at first but I
was determined to stick with it and
now I absolutely love it. It has
given me the confidence in music to
audition for the school choir and
school show, both of which I am
involved in now. I love how we are
given the chance to do lots of music
at school."

Eastlea elections
The democratic process is alive and well in the Eastlea Student Council elections
The democratic process for
electing the members of the
student council creates a real
buzz at Eastlea.
Eastlea votes
Students stand for election and
have to compete against each other
at a ‘hustings’ session in front of
their year group where they do a
three minute speech to try and
persuade their peers to vote for
them. Elections follow, with a secret
ballot and First Past the Post
system to decide the new Student
Council reps and their deputies.
Ansa Edem was appointed Student
Council Representative for Lea Year
11 and said: “I feel honoured that I
am going to be able to make a
difference to my year group and
school and I hope that I will be a
2
good listener and take on board
what the students here want”.
This system was created to ensure
that the student voice is a
meaningful concept at Eastlea. The
experience of voting generates real
excitement at the school. Staff hope
that by getting into habits such as
voting early on, young people will
grow into citizens who inherently
understand the importance of
participating in democratic systems.
Feedback from Eastlea students
demonstrates how important this
process is and why it really works:
“I think it is really important that
students have a say in who their
representatives are,” said Sade
Raphael, year 8.
Nicole Mutoro, year 9 said: “It felt
scary to stand up in front of my
whole year group and do my
speech but I wanted to push myself
to try and do something new. I am
disappointed that I didn’t win but I
really enjoyed the experience and I
am definitely going to try again
next year”.

Gold Awards for Maryland Primary School garden

Head teacher, Lorna Jackson, and

award winners to the prize-giving
event at London’s Guildhall on
Thursday 8th October. At the event
Alan Titchmarsh expressed
appreciation at how much work the

nature and promised a visit. He was
also intrigued that Maryland Primary

Nature’s Garden area for children to
enjoy in the summer months.
In July when the Chairman, Tony

the entry, he commented: “I’ve
never seen anything like this. I’m
really impressed with the different
parts of the garden you have and
that you include not just the
children, but the community as
