Spicer Hallfield portraiture based product sales in 2007 were up 23% from 2006.
21st-century family no longer wants straight, formal shots.
Instead, they want real-life reportage of every day activities,
capturing personality and mood at a moment in time, to be
remembered forever.
It’s a desire that’s seen more demand for the capture of more
specific moments in time - events, parties, prom nights and
graduations all offer new creative opportunities for portrait
photographers. Even the humble school photo has a new lease of
creative life.
Portrait photography has strayed into the world of fashion with the
yen for professional model shoots, extending to boudoir
photography as gifts for loved ones.
Photographers have responded in kind to the demand for highly
professional and creative portraiture. The art has moved onto the
High Street through chain and franchise studios – welcoming the
‘Toni & Guy’ of the portraiture market. Portraiture has become
‘trendy’ in a way we’ve never seen before, affordable to the youth
market and lower income families. Today, pretty much anybody can

records, I’ve become a ‘cool’ dad.

Whatever has happened to tradition?
This is the dawning of the new Age of
Aquarius, isn’t it? And we are evolving into a
race of free thinkers, aren’t we? That’s what
today’s bridal fashions would have us
believe. Strange in a way, as fashion itself
has traditionally been victim to the old
adage, ‘what goes around comes around’.
That might ring true if you’re enjoying the
flares and hot pants revolution, but the
wedding dress has finally eloped from all
things traditional.

Wherever they are conceived, trends travel.
In true globetrotting fashion, all over the world the wedding gown has gone
glam, coloured with its own personality and style as we throw tradition out
the window in gay abandon of the need to conform – in welcome of
globalization and acceptance of all cultures.
Brides are so over white orchids. Black is back. Sarah Jessica Parker said ‘I do’ in a black
meringue years ago – and look, she’s still wed. But it’s not just black, it’s every hue of the
rainbow - or whatever else takes your fancy. And it‘s not just the dress, it’s the whole
shebang, from eco weddings to magical woodland fantasies. Anything goes. From making
a decorous grand entrance, riding in on the shoulders of a loved one in sequinned
Moroccan regalia. To taking a leaf out of Liz Hurley’s register by stretching the affair
over miles of intricately sewn Indian silks and satins…days, venues.
The whole point to it all is that one little word filled with so much
meaning – choice.
Chances are, it won’t be all white on the night for the typical 2008 wedding.
Not while hot colour is set to be the latest trend. Brides can choose to
carouse in crimson, pay homage to purple – and their North American
