Here is a true story of a colleague from his travels. One
morning in his travels he went to a Synagogue Minyan. He arrived at
9 a.m. and sat down in the pews to wait for the Minyan. Soon
someone entered the Chapel, walked right over without a “Welcome”
or “Hello” and said: “You’re in my seat.” Looking around at the
empty seats and the three people who were present at the moment my
colleague moved with apologies although my colleague and the local
Rabbi were there on time. This scenario was repeated five times by the
time minyan started leading my colleague to move six times.
Our Oral Torah Teaching known as the Talmud recognizes
people’s attachments to their particular place to sit at home, work and
Synagogue. The Jewish concept is “Makom Kavua – designated seat.”
I experienced this as a student in Talmud class when I arrived
once late and my usual chair was occupied. Feelings, memories and
other associations can accumulate with our designated seats at home
and elsewhere. My Talmud Professor asked me fewer questions that
class because he explained I would not be at my best not sitting in my
“makom kavua.”
What is the origin of this concept? The Talmud in Brachot (6a)
attributes it to Abraham. Abraham is credited with establishing the
morning prayer service, as per Genesis 19:27, “And Abraham got up
early in the morning…” The end of that verse teaches us the concept of
a makom kavua: “…to the place where he had stood before G-d.” We
see from this that Abraham was careful to pray in the same place. But
how far should we carry this?
Whether at home, work, the Synagogue or elsewhere people
develop increasing comfort occupying their regular place. It is good to
respect people’s places of comfort, especially when there is time and
living experience invested in that seat or place. Our Tradition tells us
that sitting in one’s seat is helpful but it does not override being nice to
people. Judaism requires caring and support for one another.
In addition to our seats, we become accustomed to habits and
many repeated behaviours. “Makom Kavua” focuses on how such
repeated acts can contribute to our comfort and meaning.. Isn’t it great
for example, that one establishes a place associated with them at the
Synagogue? Attending Minyan regularly influences our character and
benefits others significantly. This usually demonstrates appreciation of
Jews, Jewish life and our cherished values.
As we begin a new secular year, 2016, may we take to heart the
heart of the concept “makom kavua.’ Specifically, whatever physical
space we occupy, G-d and G-d’s influence must be there with us. In
Judaism one of G-d’s names is ‘MAKOM – place”. Thus the spiritual
meaning of “Makom Kavua” is that when G-d is a fixture, always a
Guide in our lives (through Torah and Mitzvot and the spirit of our
forebears) the humanity and sanctity of our lives and character
improve.
May life with G-d’s help, be purposeful and blessed for all.

for their son. Amid his family's debate over whether to invite an estranged grandfather, the youth
solves the problem by arranging for Grandpa to arrive two weeks early. Starring Garry Marshall.

SISTERHOOD
Happy New Year from our house to your house with all the best for this new year of 2016. Where have all the years gone?
That old adage of live each day as it comes is the way to go, because yesterday is done and over and who knows what tomorrow
will bring. I try to live up to that as much as possible. Time is too fleeting and difficult to keep from slipping away. Why then do I
keep digging into the past? I think one of the reasons is to know that it existed and at the same time, memories keep us enjoying
the past. Make sense? I’m not sure, but in keeping with these thoughts, I had to drive out to Fowler Center last week to pick up a
hand crafted present for Diane for Chanukah. On the way out and back I passed the Youngstown Airport. I don’t remember the
last time I passed the airport and it brought back a lot of memories of time spent there. I remember when you could drive up to the
airport and park in the lot and walk into the terminal without all the security that you need today. The kids thought that the drive to
the airport was a long trip. Those were the days when we used the Youngstown terminal almost exclusively when we wanted to
travel by air. If I remember correctly, you could fly almost anywhere out of this airport. All you had to do was purchase your
ticket and when the plane arrived you would walk out onto the tarmac and board. Someone could walk you out to the steps of the
plane and watch you board. We used to stand outside on the tarmac and watch the planes take off. It did become a little more of a
challenge when the jets came because they could blow you off your feet. We also would drive out with the kids and go the top of
the airport just for fun to watch the planes come and go. I remember when they remodeled and enlarged the terminal. I also
remember sitting for hours waiting for planes to arrive or take off, either as a passenger or picking up or delivering the travelers. I
think for a while they also had a snack bar. Now, sadly, they have so many fences, security and rules, I don’t believe you can get
into the terminal unless you are a passenger. I know there is one airline using the airport for public transportation, but I don’t
believe it is very often. Now the Air Force base utilizes the airport to some extent. Those were the days, my friends, those were the
simpler days.

Also a big thank you to
everyone who bought them!
The December meeting and lunch was a lot of fun. We had a delicious lunch prepared by Kravitz
Deli and served so nicely by Patty and Cheryl. Thank you for the good food and company. We had the raffle
drawing at the meeting and the winners were: Fleece blanket- Rob Berk; “Cruising Down Belmont”- Toby
Brenner; Hand knitted hat & scarf- Alice Franklin; Lovely necklace designed and created by Sandy MillerEllen Weiss; My bread- Howard Sniderman and $100 GE gift certificate- Phyllis Friedman. We played bingo
and the winners there were Sandi Altman, Toby Brenner, Holly Small and yours truly. It was a lot of fun.
By the way, we tried an experiment with Leagrams by raising them to $2.00 each. Sadly, that
experiment failed somewhere along the way and we will be going back to the old way of $1.00 each in April.
Sometimes the old is still the best, if you know what I mean. As long as we are talking money, I just wanted
you to know Women’s League has been gradually increasing cost per member for the last few years. Due to
their increases we will, regrettably, have to increase our dues from $25.00 to $30.00 this year. This change
will become effective July of 2016.
Our thanks to our Honorable Mensches for the month of December, Debbi Grinstein, Phyllis
Friedman and Ronna Marlin for donating money to help underwrite Sisterhood’s wonderful lunches. We
really appreciate all that they do for our Sisterhood.
Our next meeting will be February 9, 2016. It is an Open Board meeting which means that you don’t
have to be on the Board, any Sisterhood member is invited. Wishing you all a healthy Happy New Year.
