VOLUME 14 Issue 2
Join us at BasketBALL 2014!
Nothing says spring like the annual NCAA Tournament
AND the National Parkinson Foundation Heartland’s
annual BasketBALL event!
Led by Honorary Chair Michael Coleman, Sports Director
for KCTV 5, this year’s event will celebrate the 14th
Annual BasketBALL on Saturday, March 29th, from 5
– 11 p.m. at the College Basketball Experience adjacent
to the Sprint Center. This unique event –which sold out
last year with 500 people in attendance -- will be held
in conjunction with the NCAA Elite 8 Men’s Basketball
tournament.
Enjoy watching the games streaming live on giant
screens on two floors of entertainment that will
include: contests, food, drink and casino style games
you can play for fun or to win a variety of raffle
prizes. Between games attendees will gather on the
main court to bid on one-of-a-kind silent and live
auctions. And best of all: 100% of the funds
raised at this event stay in our community!

From the President
Friends & Family,
It may still be winter with snow
on the ground but the board and
staff of NPFH are in the middle of
spring with their programming,
fundraising and marketing efforts.
Our signature annual BasketBALL
fundraising event will take place
on Saturday, March 29th from 5
– 11 p.m. at the College Basketball
Experience adjacent to the
Sprint Center. This year we will be featuring the NCAA Elite 8 Men’s
Tournament instead of the Final Four to change things up a bit. For
those of you looking for an exciting and fun alternative to attending the
live event, AND a way to contribute to a worthy cause, this will be the
event for you. Our special thanks to Michael Coleman, Sports Director
for KCTV 5, for leading this year’s event one again as our Honorary
Chair.
April is Parkinson Awareness Month and in celebration we will be
hosting our annual educational and outreach Parkinson Symposium
in Wichita, KS. Held annually in eastern Kansas, but west of Kansas
City, this symposium will feature keynote presenter Stuart Isaacson,
M.D., P.A., Director of the Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders
Center of Boca Raton. For registration details please see the related
article on Page 5 of our newsletter.
Although our annual Moving Day Walk is not until June, teams have
already started registering on our website! This early response
combined with increased planning time and volunteer recruitment
has the potential for drawing the largest crowd to date with 1,000
participants expected. Scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 8 – 11
a.m., the walk will be at Liberty Memorial this year – a new venue
for this event. Besides raising money for our Heartland Chapter, our
Moving Day Walk has two other important goals: to get EVERYONE
moving for good health and to raise awareness of Parkinson’s which
affects over 1M people across the U.S. and thousands within our service
area of the state of Kansas and western Missouri.
And finally, we are excited to be a part of the National Parkinson
Foundation (NFP) campaign to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and
to empower people affected by the disease to make positive choices
for their health and well-being. It’s called: Whatever It Takes to
Beat Parkinson’s. For those of you with Parkinson’s and for those
of you caring for someone with Parkinson’s, we encourage you to
take advantage of all the programs and resources our Foundation
has to offer and to spread the word to others. National Parkinson
Foundation Heartland IS committed to doing: Whatever It Takes to Beat
Parkinson’s.
Warm Regards,
Kirk Gutekunst

WHATEVER IT TAKES
to Beat Parkinson’s
®
NPF Heartland is excited to join communities across America in
support of the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) Whatever
It Takes to Beat Parkinson’s campaign, a national movement
to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease and to empower people
affected by Parkinson’s to make positive choices for their health
and well being.
“Every person with Parkinson’s should know that they can
help fight the impact of the disease,” stated Joyce Oberdorf,
NPF’s President and CEO. “No one is too old or too sick to see
improvements in their daily life. This campaign brings to light the
many ways that anyone can take action, and arms them with the resources they need to live their best life with
Parkinson’s. It speaks to the core of our mission to improve care, and improve lives.”
The centerpiece of the Whatever It Takes to Beat Parkinson’s campaign is a graphic mosaic of NPF’s
blue ribbon “P” for Parkinson’s, made up of more than 100 unique icons. Each icon represents a means to beat
Parkinson’s— from yoga, to keeping a balanced diet, to staying positive and seeking out the right treatments.
The graphic is being introduced as the national symbol for living well with Parkinson’s disease.
“
You can learn more about the campaign and request flyers, posters and other materials by linking to the
interactive webpage at www.parkinson.org/whateverittakes.
“
Every person with Parkinson’s should know that
they can help fight the impact of the disease.
--- Joyce Oberdorf, NPF’s President & CEO
ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
TAKE FREQUENT WALKS
Establishing a daily routine
helps keep you on track with
medications and exercise
regiments. It can also help with
sleep and digestion issues,
which can affect people with
Parkinson’s.
Several studies have shown that
there is an immediate effect from
walking, including a faster walking speed, longer stride length
and improved balance – as early
as after one walking session!
NUTRITION
MUSICAL THERAPY
Parkinson’s patients need to
stay away from a high-fat diet.
Eating Mediterranean style may
protect brain cells, slow degeneration and ensure a longer,
healthier life.
4
www.parkinsonheartland.org
Music therapy helps patients
cognitively, and physically by
using their voices and moving
their bodies. New research shows
that exercise, social stimulation
and singing can help postpone
Parkinson’s symptoms.
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
A huge thank you to both Teva &
Park Meadows Senior Living for
volunteering to sponsor lunch for
the Wellness Class/Caregiver’s
Support Group. Teva provided lunch
on January 9, and Park Meadows
provided lunch on February 11.

Classy, Sassy Art Glass Classes
Bearden’s Stained Glass, 7600 Metcalf, Overland Park :: 913-268-5018, Susan Wiens
1st & 2nd Wednesday of the month (Mar. 5 & 12, Apr. 2 & 9)
Darcy Bearden, owner of Beardens Stained Glass, and Susan Wiens, a glass
artist living with Parkinsons, have created an art glass class for people with
PD.
Ever think you could work with colored art glass to produce lively, colorful projects--with a sense of “YES I
CAN!” Well, we are going to teach you how! Learn how to cut the glass into your own designs, attach it, use of a
kiln (oven)--all aspects of the “How’s and Why’s of Glass.” Each class will have a project, usually completed in
one session--a fish, a nightlite, keyrings, a votive holder, a frame, etc. There will be a small fee associated with
the project usually in the $10-15 range. Call Susan at 913-268-5018 to register as space is limited to 10. Come
to our next class and see how much fun we can have!

A Special Thank You..
When Mary Beth Simpson’s mom (also known
as Nanny) was diagnosed 5 years ago with
Parkinson’s disease, she and her family decided
to do something about it.
They decided to create the annual Treadmill
Challenge which encourages people “to run
and walk miles and miles” in honor of their
loved ones and in support of ALL those who
have Parkinson’s. So every year, Mary Beth
invites family, friends and past participants to
participate via email, and pledges to donate
$10 per every mile walked by the participants.
This year, Nanny died in October losing her
battle against Parkinson’s. But Mary Beth
encouraged participants to be strong and carry
on, just as Nanny had all her life. And, boy
did they, raising a total of $7,523 for NPFH.
Thank you Mary Beth, the Simpson Family and
all Treadmill Challenge participants for your
amazing support!

Moving Day is June 14 - Form Your Team Today!
The Moving Day® Walk for Parkinson’s is a collaborative effort of the National
Parkinson Foundation (NPF) and the National Parkinson Foundation Heartland
Chapter. This event is a day of joining together and raising awareness of
Parkinson’s disease. In 2013, over 650 participants, including people with
Parkinson’s disease, family, friends, co-workers, healthcare providers, corporate
leaders and corporate teams, joined together to exercise while raising funds in
support of the Foundation’s mission. It is a day to move, a day that will move you
and a day to move others.
In addition to a fundraising walk, this is a celebration of movement, with a
special Movement Pavilion featuring various types of exercise including seated
exercise, yoga, dance and the “Parkinson’s Experience” which allows people to
experience what it is like to have Parkinson’s disease. The pavilion will be open
when registration begins through the end of the walk. For those who prefer not
to walk, there will plenty of wonderful activities, entertainment and information
to enjoy.
Although registration to walk at Moving Day ® is free, we do hope you will
fundraise on behalf of NPF Heartland. For more information on how to do that,
or to start a team in honor of your loved one, just go to
