We are not average we all have specific
memories and specific events. We know exactly
what kind of dress we have worn or which
perfume. We can remember the smallest things.
And most of all, we love to keep them. We love to
keep stories we tell them on special occasion, but
sometimes we don‘t have the chance.

„The last will, as a tool to organise the legacy is not enough
... it‘s not all about the money!“
77% of finnish people rated
“values and life lessons” as the most
important legacy they could
receive or leave.
„People don‘t want to be forgotten“
Through our initiative literature as well as
qualitative research we found out several very
useful information, that led us to the conclusion
of a problem with the existing last will. It takes
care of just a small part of peoples lifes. But it
ignores the emotional side completely. Practical
information and rational legacies have to be
done, but we were wondering why there is a lack
of emotional contribution.
Florina Trost, Joakim Eriksson, Shengjun Shi, Tatu Vienamo
Initial research
We got the chance to talk to a day care nurse as
well to a hobby- specialist nurse at Villa Breda
in Kauniainen. The interviews we have made in
Kauniainen have been very insightful and
opened up new design opportunities.
In order to understand the holistic picture of
dying and the end of life we also spoked to the
priest of Kauniainen as well as to a funeral
service center in Helsinki.

Workshop
On Friday’s workshop we used a deck of cards
as a tool to help the participants talk. Two
elderly ladies and one nurse
joined our table, maybe our topic is not the most
welcomed one so just a few people have chosen to
join us... Although the workshop did not went on
as planned, we still get valuable info from
participants. The workshop eliminated our
stereotypes toward old people - one lady said
she’s not depended, she doesn’t consider
herself “old” and she’s actively learning new
things - she talked about her plan to buy a new
Mac and learn to use it. The workshop makes it
a fruitful week. But still we were not clear about
the exact approach, but we are sure
the direction is right.

For the workshop we decided to come up with
some materials which did support our
ideation afterwards. We created a few small
design games also helped our participants to
understand and validate our direction. On the
next slides you can see the different kinds of
small tools we used to get in touch with the
people at the workshop.

Point / Purpose / Potential
The interviews we had taken and as well as the workshop made clear, that
there are two different kind of problems. One, the challenge to speak openly and
fearless about death and the bygone days of everyone of us , the other problem
we noticed is to take care of the legacy. This can be a very stressful and difficult
experience. Organising, planning and clearing out the things left behind, is very
difficult and in addition the traditional last will is lacking the
emotional aspects and real life memories. So it‘s getting even harder to devide
between valuable objects and things of the beloved passed away person.

For the concepts we generated quite a few ideas. It‘s like an
iteration. First we had the idea of sticker notes on the
personal beloved objects. Florina told a sweet story of her
banana plant. When she was leaving for Tokyo, she had her
roomy to take care of it. She left a post-it on it saying her
roomy can have it (by any chance) she can‘t make it back.
We were inspired by this story. We shifted our direction
from death to memory. What if we try blur the boundary of
memory and physical world? Or the physical world and
cyber world? The first idea presents an index book and
some number stickers. It‘s easy to use for the elders. They
can tag the objects(and the memories of the objects) they
want to pass to their descendants.

The tagged objects and the person‘s life and memories are connected by the index book. Then we
thought this might be a little excessive to realize.
The idea of black light came into our minds. The
memories could be written directly on the objects.
Though we may face the problem of identify the
ones with memories and a crime-scene-like room.
The ultimate ideal solution is taking full advantage of the fast developing mobile computing
devices. The memories can be separated and permanently preserved into the cloud and meanwhile
connected to the real world by using QR codes,
NFC or augmented reality technology.
The concept Memo occured out of almost 5 weeks of deep
and insightful research, co-creation workshops as well as ideation.
We put together the best ideas and combined it to one holistic concept.

Service / Product / Practice
Memo is service concept divided in two areas. The modern part and
the low-tec part. We got to know that the current target group at
Villa Breda is not very familar with modern technology, their family
members and relatives in contrast are using contemporary
technology in their every day lifes. Memo brings together generations
trough combining those two parts. We now get the chance to address
all the members in a family.

In order to use the service you have to tag
certain objects you would like to talk about.
You can stick the QR-Code stickers on every
object you like. This can be a picture,
a cup, a book or something else, that is
valuable for you and worth writing about.
The tag is making the things you want to
leave behind visible for your relatives and
family members.

Overview 4D Framework
Service / Product / Practice
Memo is a service that helps
people to organise, pass on and
share memories as well as a tool
that can bring back forgotten
memories.
Point / Purpose / Potential
Process / Principle / Platform
To take care of the legacy of a
beloved person can be a very
stressful and difficult experience.
You have difficulties to organise the
things left behind. The traditional
last will is lacking the emotional
aspects and real life memories.
connecting
emotional
remembering
peace of mind
Passion / Philsophy / Point of View
Offering a service that keeps memories of the
most valuebale objects/ places/people in one
digital place. Memo will change your
experience and perception of life and death.
Florina Trost, Joakim Eriksson, Shengjun Shi, Tatu Vienamo
Benefits
The benefits for people using the service is mainly passing
on memories, stories and values for their relatives and
family members. Memo will enhance the wellbeing of
your remaining days and it will protect you from being
alone. You have the chance to go through all your
memories and stories as well as experiences. It is
proven and healthy to sort things out before you die.
There shouldn‘t be any regrets left, everything should be
said or in this case written down.
Florina Trost, Joakim Eriksson, Shengjun Shi, Tatu Vienamo
Benefits
The experience for people receiving the memories and stories of
the person who passed away, will be very special, emotional and
personal. Memo is a platformable service which means that it
can be easily continued by all family members. You can continue
using the book as well as using the website for more
detailed links and combination of serveral family legacies.
Building up holistic familiy trees as well as creating
generation-spanning legacies is something even children in
future generation can benefit from. Organising, planning and
clearing out flats will be less stressful and more a valuable
experience. You get to know your beloved person much better
and you always be able to recapture memories and
stories of past times.
Florina Trost, Joakim Eriksson, Shengjun Shi, Tatu Vienamo
Benefits
Building up emotional history in Kauniainen is one of the most
benefitial parts of the service for the city of Kauniainen.
Memo is more seen as a very personal, remaining and
most of all connecting service. If the person is willing to make their
emotional legacy public, Kauniainen can use the information for
their own purpose. Stories, true memories of real places in
Kauniainen can be used for building a big systematic picture of the
city; its history, inhabitants and their emotional wellbeing.
Florina Trost, Joakim Eriksson, Shengjun Shi, Tatu Vienamo
Future of Memo
In future we see Memo as a standard
and more contemporary last will in
order to take care of the legacy. We
think, that in future health care will be
much more connected and cross-linked
to the internet and mordern devices.
Health care will take place much more
at home, where normal devices will be
transformed to health measuring
instruments. E-books, tablets and
laptop will be more present then ever.
In future there won‘t be a book, the
whole concept would be digital and
even more easy and pleasent to use!
Scanning in your favourite object,
writing about it, linking it to some
Youtube videos soundcloud
applications, can be a solution.
QR-Codes will be invisible and just
seen through augmented reality apps.
