INDOCHINA:
COUNTRY OVERVIEW
Vietnam:
a country with a rich, centuries-deep history, with grand colonial buildings,
vibrant markets, temples and pagodas, deserted sandy beaches, glorious mountain scenery
which is home to many ethnic minority people, and vast brilliant green rice fields, delicious
cuisine and luxurious hotel and resorts. The Northern capital, Hanoi, is known as the artistic
and cultural centre of the country, with Hoan Kiem Lake at heart of the city. In the Old Quarter,
at the Temple of Literature and in the museums the past comes alive. Ho Chi Minh City
(Saigon), in the South, is the commercial powerhouse of the country, with International hotels,
shiny new shopping malls, old markets, museums, China Town, and café-life. The city is truly
multi-cultural.
The country has seven UNESCO World Heritage sites which stand testament to its history. The
Lunar New Year festival ‘’Tet’’ is the most important public holiday and falls on the first day of
the first month of the Lunar calendar. This event is celebrated by Vietnamese everywhere.
Laos: one of the last remaining peaceful countries on earth. Endowed with stunning
natural beauty, from the remote mountainous North, to the fertile Southern region.
Vientiane is the ‘’laid-back’’ capital city of Laos, on the banks of the Mekong river, close to
the border with Thailand. Wat Si Saket is the oldest temple, and Pha That Luang is the most
important religious monument in Laos and the national symbol. Luang Prabang sits at the
confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, and is a UNESCO designated site. The quiet
town has many monasteries and temples including the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong, Wat
Ho Pha Bang, Wat Wisunarat and Ham Kham the Royal Palace complex. It is a treasure trove of
Buddhist culture.
Further North lies the enigmatic Plain of Jars, and to the south of the country are the cities
of Pakse, Champasak, and Savannakhet, and the verdant Bolaven Plateau. Known for its rich
coffee, dramatic waterfalls, remote hill tribes and National parks, is an adventure-in-waiting.
The hospitable Laos people celebrate many festivals throughout the year, and one of the most
important is ‘’New Year’’ which occurs in mid April, when everything closes down.
Cambodia: bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, and by the Gulf of Thailand. The
population is 90% Khmer, and their rich culture is shaped around the beliefs and teaching of
Buddhism. Cambodia is well known for the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat which lies 5.5
km from Siem Reap. Construction started in 1125 and it is the largest religious complex in the
world. Not far from Siem Reap is The Tonle Sap, a combined lake and river system of major
importance to Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in S.E.Asia, and is of major ecological
importance.
Phnom Penh is the capital city, located on the confluence of the Mekong river, the Bassac
and the Tonle Sap. The city is developing with new cafes, restaurants and hotels, but much of
the colonial past has disappeared. The Royal Palace has two magnificent pagodas, the Silver
Pagoda, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The National Museum houses an excellent
collection of art from Cambodia’s ‘’golden-age’’ of Angkor. The Khmer people enjoy all their
festivals and the Khmer New Year is the most important. It is celebrated in mid-April, when
everything closes down.
Myanmar: mystical Myanmar (previously Burma) is rich in ancient customs and
traditions. Emerging from years of isolation, tourists now have the opportunity to see this
fascinating country. It is a country of vast alluvial planes, golden temples, pagodas, monasteries,
deep jungles, and 1,200 miles of pristine coast. It is also rich in precious stones, timber, oil and
natural gas. The old capital city, Yangon (now transferred to Naypyidaw) is still known for its
colonial architecture, but in particular for the stunning golden Schewedagon Pagoda which
is the most sacred and impressive Buddhist site for all the people. Further North is the ancient
city of Bagan, home to the largest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, and stupas
in the world. A truly sensational sight. Mandalay is the economic and cultural centre of the
country. From Mandalay Hill there is a magnificent panoramic view over the vast Irrawaddy
plain. The beautiful Inle Lake is located in the heart of the Shan plateau, and is known for the
leg rowing Intha people. Myanmar celebrates New Year Water Festival in mid April, similar to
the Laos, Cambodian and Thai People. This is the most important festival of the year.

3,260 km north to south.
The Lunar New Year known as ‘’TET’’ is the
most important festival of the year, and is
celebrated by all Vietnamese whether at

vaccinations to-date. Please discuss with your
GP. It is not advisable to drink the tap water.
Only bottled water should be used.
Climate
The seasons vary from the north to the south.
Generally, the dry season in the north lasts
from November to April, and during this time
the weather can be quite cold and damp.
A good time to visit is between May and
October. In the south, the rainy season starts
around May and can extend to November
and sometimes into December. However, it
doesn’t rain all the time. During these months
the land becomes fresh and bright with the
rice fields turning emerald green. The warm
sunny days return in December and usually
last until the onset of the rains in May.
People
Approximately 85% of the population are
Viet Kinh. The remainder are ethnic Chinese,
Chams or members of the ethnic minority
people who live in the central highlands and
in the mountainous northern regions close to
the border with China.
Language
Vietnamese is tonal language that uses the
Roman alphabet, and can be quite difficult
for foreigners to master. Nowadays, English
is widely understood and used especially in
tourist areas and hotels.
Religion
Buddhism is the most common religion
in Vietnam. About 8% of the population is
Catholic.

Visa
A visa should be obtained from the Vietnamese
Embassy in your country of origin prior to
departure. Your passport should be valid for
at least 6 months after your departure from
Vietnam. You should also be in possession
of a return flight ticket. A tourist visa will be
valid for 30 days. If you are intending to visit
other countries, and exit and enter Vietnam
again, you will need to apply for a ‘’Multiple
Entry Visa’’. It is now possible to obtain a ‘’Visa
on arrival’’ which may result in some delays at
the airport due to high demand. If this is your
preference, please contact:
ASIA DESTINATIONS for advice
Note, always check with the Embassy first, as
conditions for entry can always change.
Money
The national currency is the Vietnamese
DONG (VND), which is non-convertible
outside the country. There are now many
ATMs in the major cities throughout the
country. USD is also accepted in many outlets.
Telecommunications
and power
The main power outlets are 220V, but in some
areas 110V is still in use (Power adaptors
are always useful). There is an abundance
of Internet Cafes, and the service is usually
reliable. There is a good mobile phone
network throughout the country and SIM
cards are readily available.
Driving
Driving in Vietnam is extremely challenging
and the chaotic traffic is quite daunting.
Vehicles generally drive on the left side, but
motorcycles are a law unto themselves! Non
Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to
drive if they are in possession of a Temporary
Vietnamese Driving License and an
International Driving License. Please consult
your travel agent or enquire when you arrive
in the country.
Arrival and Departure
There are three International airports, at
Hochiminh City, Hanoi, and Danang.
THIS INFORMATION IS OFFERED AS A GENERAL GUIDE AND IS
SUBJECT TO CHANGE. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR ANY FURTHER
DETAILS YOU MAY REQUIRE.
