Flip Cup
Maintaining good hand-eye coordination is very important
as we grow older. Different activities can help develop a
variety of motor skills. Flip cup was a challenge and a blast
as we attempted to flip the cup on end. Laughter filled
the lobby and many came to check out the excitement.
They soon joined and beginners luck took over.

Let’s Play Bean Bag Toss!
“The ground is still frozen” claimed one Community
Member! “I want to play horseshoes. What can you do
about that?” We’ve got the solution — bean bags! It is
basically a horseshoes game without the horseshoes! We
can play anytime and virtually anywhere! Talk to your
Lifestyles Manager today about setting up a game.
Put a Spring in Your Step!
“Spring is nature’s way of saying, let’s party!” -Robin Williams
Spring is here! We had a long winter and are looking forward to warmth, sunshine,
fresh air, and tulips blooming. It’s time to put a smile on your face and go for
an outdoor walk, a trip to the park, or start planting in the gardens. April is
shaping up to be yet another busy month for both Community Members and
Team Members at V!VA Thornhill Woods, and we welcome everybody to join
fun activities in our community. Plant a flower, participate in a V!VAfit class, try a
new program from the April calendar, and more! Let’s celebrate spring together!

Beating the Winter Blues!
Aloha! Since we can’t, or simply don’t want to go outside due to cold
temperatures, we brought the fun and sun inside! The scene was
set with palm trees, umbrellas, coconut treats and punch. We “E
Komo Mai” (welcomed) a wonderful musician and Hawaiian dancer
to entertain us for the day. The ukulele sounds filled the air and
the singer took us straight to the islands of Hawaii. Community
Members were mesmerized by the hula dancer as she gracefully
swayed her hips and told stories with her hands. Upon entering our
island getaway we were greeted with Hawaiian leis and really got into
the spirit of their culture!

Crossword!
Travel Tips for Older Adults
Take a break and relax with this travel
themed crossword puzzle. Fill in the
blanks with the clues below!
Are you tired of the ice and snow and thinking about a trip down south? Are you ready to hop on a plane and get away
from it all? As the summer approaches and ticket prices drop, there are a few things you should consider before booking a
trip. Going on vacation can be a much more enjoyable experience with a little advance planning to make sure that everyone
stays safe and healthy.
The best time to travel
Don’t forget your medications
One of the nice things about retirement living is that you
can travel whenever you want! But for older adults it’s
smart to aim for “shoulder season” (April through midJune, or September and October). This allows you to avoid
the most exhausting parts about travel like crowds and
extreme heat.
Before you leave, check if you need refills of any
medications.
Most pharmacies will accommodate
flexible refills when they know you will be travelling
away from home. Also, carry a list of your current
medications, their doses, and the time of day you take
them. And remember, you won’t find V!VAlicious quality
meals everywhere you go so it’s always a good idea to
pack Gravol or Imodium — just in case.
Lighten the load
Packing light is especially important for older adults.
To lighten your load, take fewer clothing items and
try to fit it all in a roll-aboard suitcase. Figure out
ways to smoothly carry your luggage, so you’re not
wrestling with several bulky items. For example, if you
bring a second bag, make it a small one that stacks
neatly (or even attaches) on top of your wheeled bag.
Accommodations
What to bring
Take care of yourself
Carry an extra pair of eyeglasses if you wear them, and
bring along a magnifying glass if it’ll help you read detailed
maps and small-print schedules. A notebook is handy for
jotting down facts and reminders, such as your hotelroom number or tour guide information. Doing so will
lessen your anxiety about forgetting these details, keeping
your mind focused on sightseeing.
If you’re travelling far, allow a day to recover from jet lag.
If you are unsure of the water supply, drink bottled water.
To reduce the risk of food poisoning, avoid undercooked
meats, peeled and raw fruits and vegetables, and
unpasteurized dairy products. Finally, arrange for plenty
of rest breaks, particularly in hot weather.
If stairs are a problem, request a ground-floor room. No
matter where you stay, ask about your accommodation’s
accessibility quirks before you book. Find out whether it’s
at the top of a steep hill, has an elevator or stairs to upper
floors, walking distance to the beach, and so on.
And most importantly, leave your worries at home (knowing we’re keeping your suite and belongings safe and sound) and
have fun! Life is all about experiences. Bring a camera, take lots of pictures, and explore new places you’ve never seen before!
Bon Voyage!
