Marketing Opportunity
for Your Business
Your Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce is accepting vendor registrations for “Where Business Meets
the Outdoors,” a new outdoor and business expo to be held October 5 & 6, 2012 at the Nez Perce Country
Fairgrounds. “Where Business Meets the Outdoors” incorporates the concepts of the Chamber’s former ATK
Inland Northwest Outdoor Show, Valley Business Showcase, and Taste of the Valley, while adding several new
unique elements to enhance the experience for vendors and show attendees. Some of the new features include a
pre-scheduled, face to face appointment session between vendors and potential clients, complimentary childcare
(provided by a licensed childcare provider) for vendors and attendees, and a live radio remote broadcast with
at least one announcement from each vendor. The new expo will also feature interactive, educational seminars
and activities for both business owners and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
“From fishing guides to loan officers, ski instructors to insurance salespersons, caterers to auto body repairmen,
and everything in between, we all work together to make the Lewis Clark Valley and surrounding area such a
great place to live. This new expo will showcase all the incredible industries and recreational opportunities that
our region has to offer, with no exceptions,” said Kristin Kemak, President/CEO of the LC Valley Chamber. “We
feel it is extremely important to offer equal benefits and marketing opportunities to all of our members, and
have combined these events to place all of the businesses that we represent in front of the largest audience of
potential customers that we can.”
The cost of a 10’ x 10’ vendor booth is $175.00, and larger sizes are available if needed, both inside and
outside the fair pavilion. Registration forms are available at the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce
office, at 502 Bridge Street in Clarkston, or online at www.lcvalleychamber.org/expo or more information,
register as a vendor, or if you would like to present a seminar, please e-mail [email protected],

Taking Time to Enjoy Our Valley
I’ve finally accepted the fact that time goes by faster the older I get. I remember summer days when I was a
kid and they seemed to last forever! Now, I blink and it’s August! I long for those lazy summer days and
I’m determined to enjoy at least a few of them before the summer is gone.
SHERRI SKALICKY
Chairman, Lewis Clark
Valley Chamber
Sattler Insurance Agency
It makes me sad when I see myself and everyone around me hustle so much that they forget to stop
and remember WHY they are working so hard. Yes, we have jobs, families and other commitments
that demand our focus, but that doesn’t mean we can’t slow down once in a while and smell the
flowers. I think the best thing we did as a family was purchase a jet boat a few years ago. At the
time, we were too busy to take a real vacation in the summer, so we hoped that a boat would at
least get us together on the river for a few hours at a time. My two daughters are now 18 and
14 and they both have said that their favorite memories of us as a family have been on that boat.
When I’m up river lounging on one of the sandy beaches, it’s about the only time I’m truly relaxed
and can enjoy just being alive. We all need some kind of outlet to decompress and remind us of
how good life really is.
This valley and surrounding area is truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. It’s taken
time and maturity to realize this, but I no longer feel that there is somewhere better out there. But
to see this, we all have to slow down and really look around us. So please take the time to walk our
levees, boat and fish our rivers, hike our mountains, and get involved in our community events. Take the
time and really enjoy our valley and the people in it, you won’t be sorry.

Board of Directors
Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for the Lewis
Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors. Terms of office officially begin January
2012. It is a gracious honor to nominate someone or
yourself to serve on our Board of Directors. It is also
a very important role, with many obligations to fulfill,
but well worth the time and effort. Nomination forms
will be e-mailed to all members in good standing on
Wednesday, August 1st, and must be returned to the
Chamber office by Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended the Lunch Exchange on
July 11th, sponsored by Family Home Care and Hospice. They have
been providing in-home health care services to residents of Eastern
Washington and Northern Idaho in their homes for nearly 40 years,
by highly qualified medical professionals. They introduced their staff
and reminded attendees how important it is to think about in-home
care before it’s actually needed. Networking and many of the everimportant face to face business connections were also made during
this quarter’s Biz Buzz. A big thank you to the Ambassadors that
helped also!

Being a Leader
I recently was asking myself, “What kind of manager are you?” and I realized, I don’t think of myself
as a manager; that is too task oriented, too pointed and too uncomfortable. It makes me think of a
giant checklist with assignments I must hand out to the people paid to work for me.
KRISTIN KEMAK
How does that make you feel when you read that last sentence? Are you saying “Amen!” or
“Duh, that’s how you get stuff done?” Management is not a bad thing, it’s just not my thing, by
that I mean micro-management, looking over everyone’s shoulder, checking, double-checking…
not trusting people to do what they were hired to do because if they fail, I fail. Nope, if they “fail”,
they learn, they should do better next time and we can work together to find out what we need to do
to make it better next time.
President/CEO,
Lewis Clark Valley Chamber
This “What kind of manger are you??” thinking caused me to review my job description and to lift my
head from my computer to reflect on one of the values of the chamber that are hanging on my wall –
Leadership. It is in my job description and one of our core values. Ahha! There is a difference between
management and leadership, yes, they often overlap but I realized, I want people to want to work with me, to help
me meet our chamber’s mission and vision. I want them to do it because they have been inspired to do so, not because they have
been told it is on their “to-do list.” I want people to be excited about what they do, be excited about what we do. A leader will get in
the trenches with their people, make them feel valued, supported and guided. A leader is willing to give up authority and let others
lead, succeed and sometimes fail. A leader will forge a new path in an effort to do better, create better, live better, and be better.
Be a leader with vision, passion and excitement.

Natural Resource Committee
MEETING MINUTES FROM JULY 17TH, 2012
The July meeting of the NRC was attended by:
Jerry Klemm, Kristin Kemak, Tony Snodderly, Art Seamans, Wanda
Keefer, Todd Blamires, Mike Tatko, Neil Toothaker, Will Godfrey and
Carole Asbury.
After a short association/background introduction by each
participating member, the group began discussing how it should
best proceed to meet the needs of the community within the greater
Chamber organization. Based on this input, the following mission
statement and key issues were identified.
The Natural Resource Committee supports, promotes and protects the
values and treasures of the Lewis Clark Valley by providing natural
resource issue awareness and education to the business community.
The next meeting will focus on filling the open Committee Co-Chair
and Program Chair positions, and setting the agenda for the key
issues and speakers for the balance of 2012.
Neil Toothaker will be taking care of reservations for us at the Quality
Inn for the next NRC meeting on August 21 at noon. All interested
chamber members are encouraged to join the committee for the
August luncheon meeting.
Submitted by:
Carole Asbury
Recording Secretary
Key Issues of the Natural Resource Committee:
(Not necessarily in order of importance)
• Public Land Access
• Maintaining Navigable River System
• Supporting Multi-use Access for Recreational Activities
• Protecting Our Dams
• Stormwater Issues
• Government and Tribal Relationship

PERSONAL CHEFS AND A TRIP TO IRELAND
The Lewis Clark Young Professionals enjoyed an elegant dinner at Seasons
Bistro hosted by their personal chef for the evening, Tina Poe. It was a
great way to enjoy wonderful food and company in a nice setting. After a
round of introductions and a fun ice-breaker, Tiffany Bambacigno and Kara
Aiken (both of AAA), gave a brief overview of the Chamber trip to Ireland
over St. Patrick’s Day 2013. The LCYP likes to mix things up. One month
may be oysters and wine at a downtown Bistro, and the next month might
be beer and popcorn at a local brewery. For our August gathering, there
will be a change-up from the typical 3rd Wednesday of the month meeting,
since Eric (LCYP Chair) will be out that week. Tentative plans are to get
together on Aug 22 instead. Stay tuned for location.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories offers a complete range of
solutions that improve how electric power is delivered. Our mission is
simple—make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical.

The group is open to anyone ages 21 – 40. If you are a young
professional interested in being part of this dynamic group, contact Eric

of each month at varying locations. Find their page on Facebook:

Establish Sensible Credit and Collection Policies
Providing quality goods and services requires a significant
investment of time, cash, and expertise, and without an effective
credit and collection policy, a reasonable return on that
investment may prove elusive. By extending credit to customers
who don't pay, companies all too often provide products and
services for free. Yet if businesses tighten credit requirements
too much, good customers may take their business elsewhere.
Although owners and managers may be reluctant to pump
scarce resources into collecting bad debts, if receivables aren't
adequately controlled, a company may find itself without the
cash needed to cover ongoing expenses.
SYSTEMATIC COLLECTION PROCEDURES.
You'll want to document
when and how delinquent customers should be contacted. The
policy and procedures manual might include phone scripts,
sample collection letters, and a discussion about turning over
delinquent accounts to third-party agencies. Some surveys show
that the probability of collecting past-due accounts drops to
50% after six months and 25% after a year. Accordingly, your
policy should also discuss the write-off of uncollectible accounts.
This article contributed by:
Su Brown & Associates, PLLC
All things considered, developing and maintaining a strong
credit and collection policy is a balancing act. Nevertheless,
every policy should include certain key elements.
A MISSION STATEMENT AND GOALS. Will you be liberal on credit and
conservative on collections, or vice versa? How much risk are
you willing to accept? How will you measure the effectiveness
of your policies? To track goals, some companies use various
metrics — the percentage of current receivables to sales is one
measure — to determine how well their credit and collection
policies are working. A strong policy will spell out these goals
and metrics.

DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES. The policy should define specific
roles and levels of authority for credit and collections staff. It
should delineate who is responsible for collecting required
customer documentation and who has the authority to establish
and revise credit limits. The policy also should discuss the chain
of command and specify who has the final word when conflicts
arise.
CREDIT EVALUATION AND APPROVAL PROCESSES. A strong policy will
lay out procedures for extending credit, such as stating that
customers with credit limits below $5,000 will not be scored for
new orders, but those with limits between $5,000 and $10,000
will require a current credit report. The policy also might require
that orders exceeding certain limits be accompanied by a
current set of financial statements.

St. Joseph keeps Level III Designations
FOR ADULT AND PEDIATRIC TRAUMA SERVICE
St. Joseph Regional Medical Center has earned Level III Adult
Trauma Service and Level III Pediatric Trauma Service designations
from the Washington State Department of Health, DOH officials have
announced.
The designations help St. Joseph continue to give the highest standard
of trauma care to the region it serves.
Washington State Department of Health guidelines state a trauma
system is a predetermined and organized response to managing
and improving the care of severely injured people. It also provides a
foundation for disaster preparedness and response.
The department designates five levels of adult acute care trauma
services and three levels of pediatric acute care trauma services.
Every three years, hospitals can apply and compete for trauma service
designation. All applicants complete a written application. Levels I, II,
and III pediatric acute care applicants also receive a clinical on-site
survey. Based on an assessment of the written application and the
results of the clinical on-site survey, the department selects the most
qualified applicants.
throughout their stay for care. Trauma data is collected and entered
into a registry database for quality improvement and injury prevention
initiatives. St. Joseph continues to develop injury prevention programs
to help reduce trauma in the region. The Medical Center also works
with regional EMS personnel to develop regional educational
programs to improve their trauma care.
Dr. Gary Thorne serves as the chair of the St. Joseph Trauma
Committee, which oversees the application process for the Medical
Center. Circe Munson, Trauma Coordinator at St. Joseph, and Denise
Fehrenkamp, Trauma Registry Coordinator, both were instrumental
in working on the application process, which consisted of filling out
a 100-page application, a site-survey that consisted of reviewing 80
charts, a facilities tour, 1-on-1 interviews, and a review of St. Joseph
policy and procedures as compared to Washington State DOH
trauma standards.
Only nine hospitals received Pediatric Trauma Service designation
during the latest process and the designations began on July 1. St.
Joseph has received both trauma service designations since the 1990s.
The Level III designations verify that St. Joseph has the expertise and
resources to provide quality care to trauma patients. At St. Joseph,
trauma surgeons are available 24 hours a day to respond to trauma
emergencies, and nurse clinicians attend to each trauma patient
