Catalonia is one of the main tourism
destinations in southern Europe. An ever
increasing number of tourists decide each

Our spas are fruits of the Roman tradition

The main characteristic of spas, also known as ‘thermal

What’s more, it offers a wide variety of therapies that improve

Given Catalan society’s interest in hydrotherapy, the end of the
xix century witnessed the emergence of establishments
conceived exclusively as body care centres and as places for
recreation and relaxation. Many are still fully operational,
outstanding examples being the Hotel Balneari Termes
Orion —in Santa Coloma de Farners— and the Hotel Balneari Vichy Catalan —in Caldes de Malavella. Other
establishments have maintained the spirit and the essence of
that period while making it compatible with modern services.
Examples would be the Balneari Estació Termal de Caldes
de Boí, the Hotel Balneari Font Vella —in Sant Hilari
Sacalm— and the Balneari Titus —in Arenys de Mar.

‘Wellness centres’ include thalassotherapy
establishments, spas and recreationalthermal centres, all of which use water
—both fresh and salt— as the basis
for their treatments, although invariably
supplemented by other techniques,
therapies and services.
Thalassotherapy centres provide preventive and healing
therapies that focus on aesthetics and health through the
application of seawater and the climate of wellbeing it creates.
The essence of thalassotherapy may be found at centres like
the Ra Beach Hotel & Spa in El Vendrell —housed in a former
sanatorium— and the modern Hotel Colon in Caldes d’Estrac.

Wellness and spa
Spas are all those establishments that use running water for
treatments, therapies and relaxation systems in the form of
swimming pools, jacuzzis and saunas. Some also offer physical
exercise facilities, beauty centres and alternative activities like
yoga, meditation and ayurveda.
Recreational-thermal centres provide facilities and services
similar to those of spas, and there are those that have thermal
and medicinal-mineral waters declared of public utility.

Wellness Tourism Club, affiliated to the Catalan Tourist Board, is
responsible for promoting Catalonia as a health tourism destination
through firms, entities and organisations linked to this sector. The Wellness
Tourism Club encompasses spas, hotel-spas, wellness centres, medical
centres, associations and tourist boards. On the following pages you will

We offer a two-hour thermal circuit in which the client is given the personal
assessment of a therapist. The circuit includes a pediluvium, a therapy pool, a Turkish

Medicinal waters in the spring of El Vendrell
In El Vendrell, which has been a spa town since 2004, it is quite normal to see people
of all ages bathing in the spring of Coma-ruga to take advantage of its medicinal
properties. This spring rises in the Bonastre massif and wells up spontaneously on
the beach. The shallowness and constant temperature —between 18ºC and 21ºC—
of the water make the spring the ideal place for young and old alike to engage
entirely safely in hydrotherapy all year round.
