Wilson’s Wisdoms
On opening day:
"They’re excited for the opportunity to play someone
different after beating up on
each other two or three times
per week. It gets old."
On invigorating a program:
"New uniforms don’t make
you play better. We have to
compete in everything we do
and outhustle people on both
sides of the ball."
On Uche Osadebe’s move to
offensive line:
"He’s challenging the guys
ahead of him. I wouldn't be
surprised to see him crack
back into the starting lineup."
On Fordham:
"They’re young in the secondary from what I've seen. We
need to pressure them. We
have to create space when we
run the ball. We cannot force
the issue or turn the ball over.
Fordham runs the ball pretty
well. I think we did a great job
against the run [in the scrimmage] against Harvard, but
they didn't use their starting
tailback."
On Columbia’s Depth:
"Our twos and threes are
predominantly freshmen and
sophomores."

NOTES
We Serve New Radio
Columbia Athletics announced September 5 that all ten Lions football
games during the 2006 season will
be broadcast live on WSNR, 620 AM,
the Sporting News Radio affiliate in
the Metropolitan New York City area.
WFAN sports anchor Jerry Recco
has been named as the play-by-play
announcer for all broadcasts. Recco,
who has been a mainstay of WFAN
for ten years, is also a familiar voice
to Sirius Satellite Radio fans, where
he has hosted the “Between the
Hashmarks” college football show
and last year was the Update Anchor
for Sirius’ NFL Radio coverage.
Rick Mantz, who was President of
the New Jersey Football Coaches Association and head football coach at
Hillsborough High School, will serve
as color commentator.
All 10 football games will be simulcast online at gocolumbialions.
com. Visitors to gocolumbialions.com
will also be able to see an enhanced
video webcast featuring the WSNR
audio feed via the SideLION Pass feature.
WKCR 88.9 FM will also continue
to broadcast Columbia football. John
Painting will provide play-by-play,
with Howard Klein doing color.
Captains
Seniors Matt Barsamian, Adam Brekke
and Uche Osadebe have been elected
captains for the 2006 campaign. It
marks the fourth straight season the
Lions have had three or more captains
in a season and just the 13th time in
the program’s history, including two
seasons in which the Lions had game
captains.
Barsamian, an economics major
from Rochester Hills, Mich., is one of
the Lions’ top offensive linemen.
Brekke is a neuroscience and behavior
major from Houston. A teammate said
of the middle linebacker, “In a way,
Adam has been like a captain since
he joined the team as a freshman.”
Also hailing from the Houston area,
Osadebe was honorable mention AllIvy League on the defensive line last
season and was moved to guard this
fall. He is majoring in psychology.
Give Me Liberty
Today marks the fifth contest for
the Liberty Cup, which was created
in 2001 to recognize the events of
September 11.
The Lions look to defend the cup
following last year’s 23-17 victory
last September in the Bronx. In that
game, Jeff Oke had a sack, forced a
fumble and recovered another and
Jon Rocholl booted three field goals.
Craig Hormann completed 22 of 33
passes for 215 yards as the Lions
rallied from a 10-3 halftime deficit in
a game that was delayed 65 minutes
due to lightning in the area. The Rams’
James Prydatko rushed 22 times for
165 yards and two touchdowns.
The Liberty Cup series is now tied,
2-2. The Lions also won the inaugural
game in the cup series, 13-11, in
2002.
This is the 15th-ever meeting
between the Lions and Fordham in a
series dating back to 1890. Columbia
leads the all-time series, 10-4. The
teams have met in each of the last six
years; each school has won three of
those meetings.
Columbia is 4-2 on opening day
vs. the Rams.
The Liberty Cup was instituted to
commemorate the victims of Sept.
11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks.
The Mane Gets a Makeover
In addition to a new coaching staff,
Columbia will be sporting new
uniforms and helmets for today’s
contest. The white helmets will
feature the tertiary logo of Columbia
Athletics, the block ‘C’.
Husky Voices
Norries Wilson and Tom Masella
missed coaching together at UConn
by one season. Masella was secondary
coach in 1998 and Wilson was
offensive line coach the following
season. Columbia's first two games
will feature opposing coaches in their
first season as head coaches.
Who Owns New York?
Columbia is now 22-7-1 all-time
vs. New York City institutions of
higher learning, including 10-4 vs.
Fordham.
Ram Tough
Columbia has 29 tackles for a loss in
the last two meetings with Fordham
Static Statistics
Columbia's 2005 statistical leaders in
rushing, passing, scoring, tackles, punting,
punt returns, sacks and interceptions
return to the team this fall.
The Old 96er
Columbia is ranked 96th of 120 teams in
the I-AA.org power rankings. The Lions
were also picked eighth in the Ivy League
pre-season media poll.
He Shall Break You
Andy Shalbrack (Doylestown, Pa.)
had a sack and an interception in the
Lions' scrimmage with Harvard. The
first-year is slated to start at spur vs.
Fordham.
Have You Ever Been Experienced?
Eight of Columbia's 11 projected
starters on offense are juniors or
seniors, compared to five last season.
That number may increase to nine
as captain Uche Osadebe gains
experience on the offensive line.
LIONS IN THE PROS
For a time this summer, Columbia
had as many former players on
National Football League rosters
as any Ivy League school with
five. Marcellus Wiley ‘97CC of the
Jacksonville Jaguars is now in his 10th
NFL season and Michael Quarshie
‘05CC will spend the season on the
Oakland Raiders’ injured reserve
list. After recovering a fumble in the
Hall of Fame Game vs. Philadelphia
and recording a sack that took the
Minnesota Vikings out of field goal
range to preserve an Oakland victory
in a nationally televised Monday
Night Game, Quarshie suffered a
2006 COLUMBIA FOOTBALL
season-ending injury in practice prior
to the Oakland’s fourth preseason
game against Detroit.
Steve Cargile ‘04CC (Buccaneers),
Wade Fletcher ‘05CC (Giants) and
Jeff Otis ‘05CC (Cardinals) were each
released following camp.
Lions Fall to Harvard in
Scrimmage
Nineteen minutes into the first half of
its scrimmage vs. Harvard September
8, Columbia had posted more points
that it had against the Crimson in
the previous two seasons combined.
Additionally, the Lions had more to
show on their side of the scoreboard
than they did against all but two of
their league opponents in 2005.
Excitement might be tempered by the
fact that the 19-minute total was 10
points and Columbia fell, 37-17 to
Harvard here at Lawrence A. Wien
Stadium. However, the Crimson are
the pre-season favorites to win the
Ivy League and Columbia went deep
into its roster in the scrimmage; the
Lions had their third quarterback
in the game late in the third quarter
before Harvard replaced its starting
quarterback. Five Lion quarterbacks
took snaps in the game.
The Lions held two leads in the
contest and looked strong against the
run.
Against the pass, Harvard was
dominant, as Crimson receivers
appeared to pull in every pass thrown
at them.
Jon Rocholl had a 49-yard field
goal and a 62-yard punt – all in the
air – in the contest.
The Lions took their second and
final lead when sophomore running
back Jordan Davis took a pitch for
a one-yard touchdown four minutes
into the second quarter, capping a
seven-minute drive. On the drive,
Craig Hormann hit Jamal Russell with
a 21-yard completion, and Davis
with a 12-yard pass. Hormann found
James Besselman for a 17-yard gain to
the Crimson 28 and connected with
Russell for another 15-yarder, then an
eight-yard completion to Besselman
moved the ball to the one, setting up
Davis’ score.
Both of the Lions’ top two
2006 COLUMBIA FOOTBALL
quarterbacks looked sharp. Chris
Allison had the better statistical
afternoon, completing 5-of-6 passes
for 62 yards. He showed excellent
quickness on several plays, in one
case getting whistled down on a play
he appeared set to break free (QBs
were protected by quick-whistle rule
in the scrimmage). On another, he
scrambled 17 yards to the Harvard
23 following a 22-yard completion to
Jason Pyles, who played quarterback,
receiver and special teams during the
course of the day.
The Lions’ other touchdown was
from James Cobb, who rushed for a
nine-yard score in the fourth quarter,
bouncing off defenders in what has
become his trademark.
Defensively, Justin Nunez had
seven tackles and Eli Waltz made six.
First-year Andy Shalbrack had a sack
and an interception.
Just a Tad Better
Tad Crawford (Burlington, Ont.) had
111 tackles last season, which led
the Ivy League and was Columbia’s
highest season total since Paul Roland
'99 had 119 in 1997. Crawford was
the first Lion to have more than 100
tackles in a season since Chris Carey
’04 had 102 in 2002.
Crawford had 19 tackles vs. Princeton,
the Lions’ highest single-game total since
Carey had 19 in 2002.
For Those About to Rocholl
Sophomore Jon Rocholl (Fort Wayne,
Ind.) had what would have been a
career-long 49-yard field goal in the
Lions’ scrimmage vs. Harvard Sept.
8. Last fall, he nailed a season-long
47-yard field goal at Princeton to set
a school record for consecutive made
field goals in a season with seven.
Four of those seven were 41 yards or
longer.
Also Columbia’s punter, Rocholl
booted one 62 yards (with no roll) in
the Harvard scrimmage. He had a 74yard punt vs. Duquesne, three yards
short of a Columbia record, in 2005.
Stormin’ Hormann
Junior Craig Hormann (Indianapolis,
Ind.) has 164 career completions. Should
he duplicate his total of 145 last season,
it would leave him just four short of the
Lions’ all-time top-five career list; Archie
Roberts '65 had 313 for fifth.
If Only It Were a Best-of-Three
Season
In 2005, Columbia started 2-0 for the
first time since 1996 (that team started
6-0 before falling to Princeton, 14-11)
and for the second time since 1978.
Prior to 1978, the Lions had not won
their first two games since 1951.
A Fraction of the Infractions
Columbia finished fourth in the nation
(I-AA) in fewest yards penalized per
game (35.50 yards per game) last
year. The Lions were penalized 38
times for 355 yards in 2005. The
Lions were well-behaved in 2004 as
well, with 401 yards in penalties to
opponents’ 547.
Norries Wilson head coach
Norries Wilson, one of the top assistant
coaches in the nation while at the University
of Connecticut, became Columbia’s 18th
head coach in December 2005.
Wilson, who served as offensive
coordinator at UConn for the past four
seasons, was one of five finalists for the
Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top
assistant coach in 2004, a season in which
the Huskies led the Big East in both total and
scoring offense. In 2003, he guided UConn’s
offense that posted 477.5 yards per game,
which ranked eighth in the nation.

Prior to the 2004 season, Wilson was one of 12 coaches
selected to participate in the NCAA Expert Coaching Program.
The program is designed to teach and reinforce various aspects of
securing, managing and excelling in NCAA head coaching positions
at the Division I-A level.
Before UConn, Wilson spent four seasons at Bucknell. He
was the Bisons’ offensive line coach in 1995 and 1996 before a
promotion to offensive coordinator in 1997 and 1998. He was also
defensive coordinator at Livingstone College (1993), offensive line/
tight ends coach at North Carolina Central (1991-92) and graduate
assistant at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota (1989-90).
Wilson was a captain and two-year starter for the Gophers.
In 1985, the team defeated Clemson to win the Independence
Bowl and competed in the Liberty Bowl vs. Tennessee the
following year. He was a three-year letterwinner in football, and
earned two letters and qualified for the NCAA Championships
as a heavyweight in wrestling. He graduated from Minnesota in
1989 with a degree in psychology.
In addition to his college coaching experience, Wilson
has served minority coaching fellowships in the NFL with the
Kansas City Chiefs (1992), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and
the Indianapolis Colts (2000).
A native of Markham Ill., where he attended Thornwood
High School, Wilson is married to the former Brenda Marquis,
who played forward on UConn’s first women’s basketball national
championship team. The couple had their first son, Cecil, on
February 17, 2005.
“Columbia University has made an outstanding
choice in hiring Norries. Not only is he the type of
person who will be able to succeed as a head coach,
but he is also an outstanding football coach who
knows the game well. From our experiences here
- building UConn essentially from the ground up he knows what it will take to build Columbia into a
winner.” -- Randy Edsall
