Chip & Pin Cards in the U.S.
The recent data breaches at Target,
Michaels, Home Depot and Neiman
Marcus proved just how vulnerable
old-school magnetic stripe cards can
be. Could the more-secure EMV chip
technology that’s become the standard
internationally be the answer?
How EMV Works
EMV cards thwart some of the most
common ways thieves clone cards
and steal data. They come equipped
with a microprocessor chip that encodes the information transferred to the
merchant, such as account numbers,
differently with each transaction. So,
even if thieves manage to get data from
a merchant it’s like stealing an expired
password - it’s useless. EMV chips are
also tougher to clone than magnetic
stripes.
While EMV technology won’t make
data theft disappear, it does up the
ante for thieves, making their job harder when it comes to card-present fraud.
Instead of swiping a magnetic stripe,
consumers insert their EMV card into a
payment terminal until the transaction
is completed. This reduces the risk of
fraud for in-person transactions. EMV
cards also require a second authentication factor: the customer’s personal
identification number. This means that
an attacker who just steals the card or
the card number can’t use it unless he
manages to get the PIN as well.
However, EMV technology doesn’t do
anything about online fraud. If your
card information is stored in an online
shopping account or other website and
that information gets compromised via
a bug like Heartbleed or a colossal
hack, the little chip on your card won’t
protect you. The only thing you can do
is not store your credit card information
in these data bases or have hard-toguess passwords that change often (at
least 4 times per year).

“THE BONE SHAKER”
NuVista employee Faith Kail had some exciting news
to share in November of last year…. Her 7 year old
son, Kaston ‘The Bone Shaker’ Kail, made his way into
national BMX ranks.

The Kail family traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma in late
November where Kaston won a nationwide event for
youth BMX riders, the Race of Champions. He also
placed second in the grand Nationals race, a two-day
event in Tulsa.
