A question most of you probably get on a regular basis is how long will
my convertible top last? When you look at the different manufacturer’s
warranties you see from 1 yr. to 8 yrs. Depending on who made the
top. Kee offers an 8 yr. warranty.
It is important to educate your customers by letting them know that the care of
the top is the life of the top. Two examples come to mind, most recently we had
a customer tell us about an installation they were doing on a Nissan 350Z that
had frame damage. When the shop asked the car owner how he had been taking
care of the top he told the shop owner he took it to a car wash that had barrell
brushes so it would easily clean his top. Overload on the roof structure can cause
the frame to bend. When this happens the top frame will not function properly
when it goes up and down. This is especially true with some of the newer and
smaller cars and top frames. We understand the convenience of going to a car
wash vs. hand washing your top/car, but we suggest a touchless car wash that
doesn’t use barrell brushes to clean when hand washing is not an option.
The next example is another installer asked what he should recommend that his
customers use to preserve their vinyl top. He had been recommending baby oil.
Much to his suprise when one of his customers came back after a year of using baby
oil on their vinyl top to show him how much the top had yellowed, cracked, and
peeled. Baby oil, wax, dressing or any type of harsh cleaner are the worst things
you can put on a vinyl or convertible top. They not only ruin the top, but void the
manufacturer’s warranty.
Keep in mind Kee uses materials from the OEM mills and send cleaning and care instructions with
each top we manufacture. Kee sells a cleaner and protectant that is designed specifically for convertible and vinyl tops. It is very important to share this information with the car owner to help ensure a
satisfied customer.
