______________________________
I hope all our hard working mums
enjoyed a little spoiling on Sunday!
It was lovely
to hear the
children
explaining
why their
mum was
special and
seeing the care with which they
selected their gifts. I’d like to thank
our dedicated band of PAFA mums
for organising the Mother’s Day
raffle, stall and gifts for the children;
besides raising money for school
amenities, they brought a lot of joy
into our homes on Sunday – well
done!

Wayang Kulit Day
Last Thursday, students in Years 3-6
experienced the traditional
Indonesian art of Wayang Kulit
(Shadow Puppet Performance),
thanks to a Victorian Government
Languages Immersion Grant.
Students watched various
traditional Indonesian tales being
performed on the shadow screen
and had an opportunity to ask the
puppeteer (Dalang) questions.
Students were then involved in a
puppet making workshop where
they constructed their own puppet
from the story of Kancil and the
Crocodile, a
tale that the
students are
learning in
Indonesian.
Following this
workshop, the
students will
be fully
immersed in the Indonesian
language, having opportunities to
read, watch, listen to, write and
perform their own shadow puppet
plays in the target language. What
an exciting
way to explore
a new
language and
culture!
I would like to congratulate Bu
Kranz for gaining the grant and for
her outstanding organisation of the
Wayang Kulit experience. I can’t
wait to see the childrens’ puppet
plays!
Mossgiel Park Open Night
Sensational Science
Excitement is
building as we
prepare to
celebrate
Science Week 2016! During our
Education/Science week we will
explore many new concepts and
discover exciting facts and ideas as
we work with visiting scientists and
engineers. Our cross-age activity
morning sounds exciting and I can’t
wait to see the technology
challenge – how far will your plane
fly?
I hope you can all come along to the
family night to enjoy the science
challenges, games and activities
with your children and to perhaps
learn a little more about science in
schools. Mark Tuesday, May the
17th in your diary now to keep the
evening free. If you know any
families with young children
perhaps you could remind them
that we’re open and encourage
them to come
along and see for
themselves what
makes Mossgiel
Park such a great
school! See you
next week!
NAPLAN Testing
This week, our Years 3 and 5
students completed the NAPLAN
(The National Assessment Program
– Literacy and Numeracy)
assessment tasks over a number of
sessions. The tests assessed a
number of student skills in reading,
writing, language conventions
(spelling, punctuation and
grammar) and numeracy. The
writing task this year involved using
a narrative style of writing; there
were some very creative responses
to this year’s topic – ask your child
about their piece of writing!
Later in the year you will receive a
report showing your child’s results
in each of these tests.
These results will
add to the
knowledge you
have of your
child’s skills and progress. I am very
proud of the calm, thoughtful way
the children approached the tests –
well done Year 3 and Year 5!
Thank you for
your support,
Jenny Scott

PARENTING ISSUES
Helping Kids to be Positively
Optimistic
Optimists do better academically,
socially and have better health than
pessimists so it makes sense to
promote the skills of optimistic
thinking to children. Optimists look
at the flip side of negative events
for some good, some hope and
some reason to be positive.
The basis for optimism is in the way
that a person thinks about causes of
events, which is reflected in the way
he or she explains events. Research
indicates that children learn
optimism or pessimism from their
experiences of success and through
their interactions with
parents, teachers and
other significant
adults.
Parents and teachers
model optimism and pessimism for
children. Adults model an optimistic
or pessimistic attitude by the way
they react to both adverse or
positive events that happen in their
lives.
Optimists explain adverse events in
the following ways:
• Adverse events are temporary. ‘It
takes time to find a friend’ rather
than ‘No one likes me’.
• Situations or causes are specific,
not global. ‘I am not so good at
soccer’ rather than ‘I am hopeless at
sport’.
• Blame is rationalised rather than
personalised. ‘I was grounded
because I hit my sister’ rather than
‘I was grounded because I am a bad
kid.’
Adults can also encourage children
to use positive self-talk. An ‘I can do
it’ attitude begins with the
messages that they repeat to
themselves. This positive
way of thinking is the basis
for optimism as it tends to
become a self-fulfilling
prophecy.

House Athletics
Carnival
Last week almost all of our middle
and senior school students
attended our annual athletics
carnival at Knox Athletics track. The
students in their age groups took
part in High Jump, Long Jump, Shot
Put, Discus, Hurdles, 100m Sprint,
200m Sprint and Shuttle Relay. All
students had a great day and came
back to school with ribbons. I would
like to thank the following parents
for their assistance at
the athletics as it would
be very difficult to run
this event without
them. You are very much
appreciated by staff and students:
Mrs Rahmani, Mrs Man, Mr Inveen,
Mr Mostert, Mrs Dervishi, Mrs
Djuric, Mrs Valenzuela, Ms Calabria,
Ms Donaldson and Mrs Hach.
The final results are: 4th place Park,
3rd place Endeavour, 2nd place
Churchill and 1st place Lodge.

presented with a medal at assembly

Shravani Jaikumar
From the 26th of April to the 5th
of May, 19 lucky students and 1
happy teacher from Mossgiel
Park went to Somers Camp.
What an amazing experience!
They aimed at archery, flung
down the flying fox, rowed up a
river, rocked at rock-climbing
and danced like divas at the
disco.

Friendship
On camp, I learnt not to be
afraid of talking to new people
and making new friends. It was
nice to have someone new to
talk to. Andrew 5KW
A Challenge
It was so nerve-racking standing
at the top of the abseiling wall. I
was terrified taking my first step
down. When I reached the

Living with Others
It was a bit weird at the start
living with students from other
schools. After a while it started
to feel normal and they became
like my camp family.

the best part of being in my
