Chairman’s Report
In many respects, 2012 was a landmark year for the
Charles Allis and Villa Terrace Art Museums (CAVT).
Yes, high quality exhibitions attracted many individuals to
openings and viewing throughout the runs. Yes, the Movie
Time series continued at the Allis and Café at the Villa.
Noteworthy special events at each museum were held, too
numerous to list here.
And programming for veterans continued. During the past
year, 34 veterans participated in the programs, which were
filled to capacity. A booklet was created at the conclusion of each veterans’ workshop
showcasing their artwork, including photographs and commentaries by the veterans who
produced them. It was compelling reading. CAVT remains committed to the continuation of
such programming in the future.
But also, a number of new initiatives were undertaken, including – but not limited to –
the following:
• The American Roots Music series at the Allis in May
• Theater presentations at the Villa
• “A Chair to Remember” fundraising event at the Villa on June 20 (watch for a repeat
of this event in 2013) and
• The initiation of the “Museum Mile” in conjunction with the Jewish Museum
Milwaukee, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, and the North Point Lighthouse. A highly
successful inaugural event was held on a rainy May 6.
Two new members of the CAVT Board were elected: Leann Mester and Leslie Cooley.
They and the balance of the Board and management staff participated in a retreat on
October 13. Led by an outside facilitator, this event allowed the Board to focus on the future
of the organization.
Perhaps the largest reason for why this was a landmark year was the incorporation of
CAVT. Encouraged by the War Memorial Corporation Board to explore this route, formal
Articles of Incorporation were filed with the state. By-Laws were developed. And 501(c)3
status was sought and received. Financial management procedures were put in place, and
other issues were addressed (such as insurance coverage).
With these changes and more on the way, CAVT is poised to position itself for the future.
Many thanks are due, beginning with the numerous contributions and support from the
Friends of Villa Terrace and the Friends of Charles Allis. To Executive Director Maria
Costello and her management team, a huge thank you. To the members of the CAVT
Board and to all of those who support and contribute to the work of the museums, thank
you.
We look forward to 2013 with anticipation. I would encourage you to attend our events and
support our work.
Thank you.
Gary Buerstatte
Chairman of the Board
letter from the director
Whew – 2012 blew right by me! During my four
years as Executive Director, this past year was by
far the busiest. We started the year by filing for our
own nonprofit status, a much more involved process
than I thought it would be. Between January and
August when we received our 501(c)(3) designation,
there were meetings to get the application going,
meetings with our insurance agents to change
things, meetings with payroll specialists, meetings to
schedule meetings (okay, maybe that is a bit of a stretch, but you get the gist!).
I feel as though we discussed the importance of our own nonprofit status until I
was blue in the face. The biggest positive to come from this giant step forward
will be in our fundraising efforts. After many discussions with the Board and the
Executive Committee we are making the move to hire a development director in
early 2013. The staff continues to do a wonderful job of turning over every rock
for ways to increase our revenue and cut costs, but to really get us to the next
level we need to have a professional who can help get us there.
We started a “Legacy Fund” in 2011 for long-range projects and support of our
mission. We are about half way to our goal of a million dollars by 2015. It’s a
big goal, but doable with a “pro” who will focus on both short term and long term
sustainability.
The museums need to craft a long-range financial plan as the Milwaukee County
Board of Supervisors, and, in particular, the Finance Committee, told all county
entities this year, that our tax levy funding will continue to shrink and possibly
disappear altogether. Our board and staff are being very proactive to keep the
museums financially healthy.
Many of you have been very generous and every dollar counts! We
accomplished a lot this year. Some of the highlights included: mounting six
critically acclaimed exhibitions of local, regional and international artists,
continuing our arts programming with Veterans, restoring the Villa Terrace’s
Terrace d’Luna, increasing our community engagement as an inaugural
member of the Milwaukee Museum Mile, and holding our first annual A Chair to
Remember fundraising event in June. Without your financial support we could not
maintain and grow our programs, events and exhibits! Please know that every
contribution is appreciated and recognized. Starting with this annual report we
plan on listing every donation as an added “Thank You”.
Here’s hoping for a fabulous 2013!

curatorial
The Curatorial Department brought both new and old concepts to bear on our
exhibition schedule in 2012. At the Charles Allis Art Museum we mounted our
biannual Forward: A Survey of Wisconsin Art Now juried exhibition, receiving
over 250 entries from artists all over the state, and awarding $3,000 in prizes to
seven of them. We introduced the new series, Wisconsin’s Own, showcasing the
work of contemporary Wisconsin artists. It is meant to be a counterpoint to our
Wisconsin Masters series that returns in 2013. The first two installments of this
new series featured work by artists Lenny Nagler and Aaron Boyd.
In partnership with the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin
Milwaukee, we hosted an international jewelry exhibition, The Decorative
Impulse, at the Villa Terrace. The show featured work by six artists from around
the United States, the Netherlands, and Israel, including Madison’s own Amelia
Toelke. This exhibition helped shine new light on the Villa Terrace through
multiple outstanding reviews and academic lectures.
The Curatorial Department went through a major change in March when the
Museum’s Curatorial Committee decided to use guest curators for our changing
art shows. This brought new, exciting and diverse exhibitions to each museum.
Our first guest curator, Jane Brite, brought us Our Gardens Inside and Out
at the Charles Allis Art Museum. This group exhibition of over 100 paintings
and sculptures by Wisconsin artists was highly successful, being the most
visited exhibition at the Charles Allis last year. Two other shows rounded out
our exhibition season. To Become Day featured Michael Velliquette’s threedimensional paper constructions and Joey Fauerso’s works on wallpaper. The
group show Garden of Curious Delights displayed a variety of original work by
seven artists working with oil paints, installation, fiber arts, and ceramics. Both
shows were held at the Villa Terrace and were well received by both critics and
members alike.
A very special thank you to our many curatorial interns whose hard work and
dedication over the past year was invaluable. Their many contributions, from
completing the annual inventory, conducting research on the collection, and
helping with all aspects of installing and de-installing exhibitions, was imperative
to the Museums’ success and had a positive impact on our community. We wish
them the very best in their future endeavors.

events
Private rentals and events continued their upward trend in 2012. Despite some
structural and scheduling conflicts, we exceeded our revenue goals for the third
consecutive year, with 2012 being the best rental year we ever had. In January
a pipe burst knocking out phone and internet service at the Villa Terrace causing
a temporary relocation of the events office to the Charles Allis Art Museum
and an impromptu communication plan with clients via email. The renovation
of the terrace at the Villa Terrace was a race against the clock in order to meet
the deadline for our first weddings in April. We are pleased to report that it
was finished just in time and that our renters were delighted with the outcome.
Managing an event venue overlooking the Lake on Milwaukee’s East Side
comes with its fair share of scheduling conflicts. This year the Wisconsin Breast
Cancer Showhouse was held across the street and the Milwaukee Air Show
returned in August. Both impacted events at the Villa Terrace, but with advanced
communication and planning, their effect was minimal and our clients left happy.
A rebranding of the museums’ printed materials brought a new streamlined and
visually appealing rental brochure to the department. We hosted a wedding
style-photo shoot in September at the Villa Terrace put together by photographer
Jenna Leigh. You can see the video she created on the rental page of the Villa
Terrace website. Events Manager Katie Shorts also met with writers of the
blog Married in Milwaukee that featured the Villa Terrace in September and the
Charles Allis in October.
We would not have been able to do all that we did in 2012 without the hard
work and dedication of our event staff and volunteers. Thank you all for another
great year!

programming & events
Arts programming for Veterans continued in 2012 in partnership with the
Veterans Administration. Three Mixed-Media Sculpture Workshops were held
at the Charles Allis Art Museum in June, July and November as part of the VA’s
work with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The workshops culminated with
group exhibitions of Veterans’ work. Opening receptions announcing each show
were held for participating Vets and their guests. Our Art in the Garden Program
celebrated its ninth year of working with MPS art teachers and students in 2012.
This annual program hosts teachers and students at the Villa Terrace Decorative
Arts Museum for a day of reflection and critical thinking around disciplines
such as botany, architecture, and history. The experience is built upon in the
classroom where works of art are created, and then displayed back at the Villa
Terrace in November and December.
Annual and first-time events that engaged the community through, decorative
arts and crafts, music, theater, writing, and food, raised additional revenues and
were attended by over one thousand visitors.

marketing
The museum extended its reach through a number
of new community collaborations in 2012. Marketing
agreements with Wisconsin Public Radio, WMSE 91.7,
the Fine Furnishings Show, Visit Milwaukee, and the
Milwaukee Film Festival exposed us to new audiences.
We have also leveraged our valuable marketing dollars
through the creation of the Milwaukee Museum Mile with fellow East Side arts
and culture organizations. This new consortium with the North Point Lighthouse,
Museum of Wisconsin Art at Saint John’s On The Lake, and the Jewish Museum
Milwaukee held an inaugural event in May that drew over 400 people from
southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to the museums. The consortium
also participated in two group tour sales missions with Visit Milwaukee, which
each of us would not have been able to do on our own.
The museums also made a splash citywide with our Home Is Where the Art Is
campaign with the Milwaukee County Transit System. Four buses carried the
slogan, accompanied by artwork from the Charles Allis art collection throughout
the city for ten months exposing neighborhoods and residents to the museums
for the first time.
A rebranding of our printed materials echoed in this annual report was achieved
through participation in our membership committee. The updated look can now
be seen in our membership materials, exhibition postcards and gallery guides
and quarterly newsletter.

our friends groups
A special thanks to the museums’ two friends groups for helping
support the museums’ mission through financial contributions,
capital projects, volunteers and fundraising events.
The Friends of Charles Allis
The Friends of Charles Allis (FOCA) was the major underwriter
for this year’s revamped Allis After Hours American Roots Music
Series. They also contributed financially to help maintain operations
of the Charles Allis Art Museum and decorated the mansion for
the holidays. Two successful fundraisers: the annual Who Dunnit?
Murder mystery dinner and their inaugural wine, cheese, and
chocolate tasting party were a great success.
The Friends of Villa Terrace
The Friends of Villa Terrace (FOVT) contributed to many initiatives
in 2012. Their financial contribution to the restoration of the Villa’s
Terrace d’Luna was instrumental in seeing the project through
in time for the April wedding season. They also funded the
reinstallation of the Villa’s original shutters on the east side of the
mansion. FOVT held their spring garden lecture series again in
2012, staged an exhibition of Japanese bronzes, and celebrated the
10th anniversary of the Renaissance Garden they restored in 2002.
