President’s Notes
much your neighborhood needs your help.
Those of you who have talked to me or
emailed me or who know me, know that
every time I get an opportunity, I talk about
spending some time volunteering in your
neighborhood. The board and I certainly
don’t want to shy away from all of the very
important neighborhood issues that we have
in front of us but to me, there is nothing more
important than building the community of
Park Glen.
Hi Again,
Well the New Year is upon us, isn’t that
crazy? Maybe it’s my age but time just tends
to fly by these days. 2015 was a terrific year
and I hope 2016 is even better! I know there
are a lot of things that need to be addressed
and I’ll get to those in future issues. But this
month I want to focus on telling you how
I don’t want you to think that I don’t “get
it”, I really, really do. Like most other large
neighborhoods we have issues that need
to be addressed, and we will. But to be
absolutely candid, our neighborhood has so
many things we can do better if only we had
the volunteers to help plan, design, organize
and do. Think about it, we could help needy
families right where we live! We could make
a difference right on our own block! How
about Arcadia Park? It could use a great big

I also want to say, the neighborhood
association isn’t a click or a club or a secret
society that wants to keep you in the dark.
To the contrary, we are homeowners just like
you, who want you to know how much we
want you to join us in making Park Glen as
good as it can be! I’ve said it before and I’ll
keep saying it until you kick me out, Park
Glen is better with you than without. We
have so much potential and so much to do.

New Years Quotes. . .
• “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making
mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living,
pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things
you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something. So
that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes.
Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before.
Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect,
whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of
doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.” – By Neil Gaiman
• “For eleven months and maybe about twenty days each year, we concentrate
upon the shortcomings of others, but for a few days at the turn of New Year we look
at our own. It is a good habit.”
– By Arthur H. Sulzberger
• “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await
another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning”.
– By T.S. Eliot
• “Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things
you have always wanted to do but could not find the time. Call up a forgotten
friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not
to make a promise you do not think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You
will look 10 years younger. Do not be afraid to say, I love you. Say it again. They
are the sweetest words in the world”.
– By Ann Landers
• Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and
you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.

PARK GLEN SCOUTING
By Bob Kilburn
The past month was a very exciting month for
the Boys Scouts & Cub Scouts of Troop & Pack
205. Both the Pack and the Troop picked up and
delivered Boy Scout Popcorn that was ordered last
month. Thanks for your support.
We started off the month with a bang, celebrating
Veterans with a Red, White & Blue Tribute, a
community Flag Retirement, where dozens of US
Flags were retired in a ceremony honoring our local
Veterans/Heroes. A very busy month for Scouts,
the Troop participated in “Merit Badge Mania” at
Weatheford College @ Bridgeport. They camped at
Camp Tahuya and had fun times doing the Highland
Games in which they placed 1st in the Cambor
toss. They had a special outing to visit Southwest
Airlines Training & Operations Center to complete
their Weather Merit Badge. They toured the facility
and were taught about the weather by several
meteorologist, one of whom was former Television
Weather person Rebecca Miller.
At the monthly Cub Scout Pack meeting the
Cub Scout had a visit from the Fort Worth Fire
Department, they celebrated their success in
Popcorn sales by throwing a pie in the face of their
Adult leaders. The Scouts finished of the month
helping support the PGNA Turkey Trot, handing out
water to runners and helping with parking.

Our 11th Annual Turkey Trot
was a Success!
The rainy weather held off and it turned out to be a great morning for the Turkey Trot!! It was great to see so many folks out bright and early,
sharing their Thanksgiving morning with neighbors! We want to thank all of the sponsors! We had 23 local businesses supporting us this year!!
Our volunteers rocked it again this year! We had the Boy Scouts, and kids from Central High School and Haltom High School, folks from
Alliance United Methodist Church and Park Glen residents helping us out! We couldn’t have pulled it off without you and your help is very much
appreciated! It’s great having the church to partner up with again! Last but certainly not least, thank you to all the runners who participated! We
set a new record this year and had almost 700 runners! We hope it was a great experience for you and that you will come back and join us again next
year! Feel free to send any comments (good or bad….but hopefully not too bad!) so that we can get your feedback to help us plan for next year’s
run. You can send them to [email protected].

Flags and
Basketball Goals
If you think about it, our governing documents were written
as far back as 1989. Over the years, many things have become
popular items to have outside the home. As a family oriented
community, you could probably predict that two of those things
might be are flags and basketball goals. Let’s take a look at each
one.
Basketballs goals can be found all over our neighborhood, but
there are some things you need to know. The Deed Restrictions
for each Village were typically written specific to that Village
and guidelines for basketball was not originally included. They
were added later and are located in the Bulletins.
Some things you need to know before you install one. First,
they cannot be installed on your house or garage area. They
also require an ACC approval and there are provisions for the
newer, popular, portable goals as well. Some of the restrictions
are governed by Texas Law. For example, they cannot be in the
street or blocking the sidewalk. Just a note, the City of Ft. Worth
advises us that, it is not safe to set your goal where kids are
playing in the street. So, whichever you have or plan to get,
please check the restrictions and BE SAFE.

Also in the Bulletins you’ll find the ever so popular flag. There
are really two types, Decorative and Patriotic. Either of these
flags may be mounted on the house provided they are 4X6 or
less. They must be well maintained and the seasonal flags must
be removed when out of season. Now, the display of Patriotic
flags has been revised in recent years to comply with Texas Law.
An owner may display the American Flag, Texas Flag or the flag
of any branch of Military Service on a free standing flagpole
(not to exceed 20 feet high) or one that attaches to the dwelling
(that is harmony with the look of the home). Again, please refer
to the Bulletins and applicable Texas Law (Chapter 202 of the
Texas Property Code), for more information.
Please be aware that there are requirements that I haven’t
mentioned here. You can find all of the information on both
of these items and more at ParkGlen.org. Let’s make our
neighborhood look great!.

Do you know why black-eyed peas are lucky on New Year's
Day? As with most superstitions, there are several answers to
the question. Typically, the belief that black-eyed peas are a
lucky New Year's meal is especially popular in the south, so it
has to do with our history, right? Maybe….
Most Southerners will tell you that it dates back to the Civil
War. Black-eyed peas were considered animal food. The peas
were not worthy of General Sherman's Union troops. When
Union soldiers raided the Confederates food supplies, legend
says they took everything except the peas and salted pork. The
Confederates considered themselves lucky to be left with those
meager supplies, and survived the winter. In turn, the Black
Eyed Peas became symbolic of luck.
Directions
1. Pour the water into a slow cooker, add the bouillon cube, and stir
to dissolve. Combine the black-eyed peas, onion, garlic, bell pepper,
jalapeno pepper, ham, bacon, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper;
stir to blend. Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours
until the beans are tender.

How to Have a
Happy New Year
Many New Year customs that we take for
granted actually date from ancient times.
This year, ring out the old and ring in the
new with a New Year tradition—or two!
Make Some Noise
• In ancient Thailand, guns were fired to
frighten off demons.
• In China, firecrackers routed the forces
of darkness.
• In the early American colonies, the
sounds of pistol shots rang through the
air.
• Today, Italians let their church bells
peal, the Swiss beat drums, and the
North Americans sound sirens and
Eat Lucky Food
Many New Year’s traditions surround food.
Here are a few:
• In the southern US, black-eyed peas
and pork foretell good fortune. See our
recipe for Good Luck Hoppin’ John.
• Eating any ring-shaped treat (such as a
donut) symbolize “coming full circle” and
leads to good fortune. In Dutch homes,
fritters called olie bollen are served.
• The Irish enjoy pastries called bannocks.
• The tradition of eating 12 grapes at
midnight comes from Spain.
• In India and Pakistan, rice promises
prosperity.
• Apples dipped in honey are a Rosh
Hashanah tradition.
• In Swiss homes, dollops of whipped
cream, symbolizing the richness of the
year to come, are dropped on the floors
(and allowed to remain there!)
Drink a Beverage
Although the pop of a champagne cork
signals the arrival of the New Year around
the world, some countries have their own
traditions.
• Wassail, the Gaelic term for “good
health” is served in some parts of
England.
• Spiced “hot pot” is the Scottish version
of Wassail. It’s customary to drink a
glass or two at home before sharing
with neighbors.
• In Holland, toasts are made with hot,
spiced wine.
Give a Gift
New Year’s Day was once the time to swap
presents.
• Gifts of gilded nuts or coins marked the
start of the new year in Rome.
• Eggs, the symbol of fertility, were
exchanged by the Persians.
• Early Egyptians traded earthenware
flasks.
• In Scotland, coal, shortbread and
silverware are exchanged for good luck.
Put Your Best Foot Forward
In Scotland, the custom of first-footing
is an important part of the celebration of
Hogmanay, or New Year’s Eve Day.
This practice holds that the first foot to
cross a threshold after midnight will predict
the next year’s fortune. Although the
tradition varies, those deemed especially
fortunate as “first footers” are new brides,
new mothers, those who are tall and dark
(and handsome?) or anyone born on
January 1.
Turn Over a New Leaf
The dawn of a new year is an opportune
time to take stock of your life.
• Jews who observe Rosh Hashanah
make time for personal introspection
and prayer, as well as visiting graves.
• Christian churches hold “watch-night”
services, a custom that began in 1770
at Old St. Georges Methodist Church in
Philadelphia.
• The practice of making New Year’s
resolutions, said to have begun with the
Babylonians as early as 2600 B.C., is
another way to reflect on the past and
plan ahead.
New Year’s Folklore
Some customs and beliefs are simply
passed down through the ages. Here are
some of our favorite age-old sayings and
proverbs.
On New Year’s Eve, kiss the person you
hope to keep kissing.
If New Year’s Eve night wind blows south, It
betokeneth warmth and growth.
For abundance in the new year, fill your
pockets and cupboards today.
If the old year goes out like a lion, the new
year will come in like a lamb.
Begin the new year square with every man.
(i.e., pay your debts!) –Robert B. Thomas,
founder of The Old Farmer’s Almanac
So, whether we resolve to return borrowed
farm equipment (as did the Babylonians)
or drop a few pounds, we’re tapping into
an ancient and powerful longing for a fresh
start!

Learn About Life By Watching The Geese
Fact No. 1: As each bird flaps its wings, it creates
an uplift draft for the bird following. By flying in a
"V" formation, the whole flock adds a greater flying
range than if one bird flew alone.
Lesson No. 1: People who share a common
direction and sense of community can get where
they're going quicker and more easily because they
are traveling on the strength of one another.
Fact No. 2: Whenever a goose falls out of formation,
it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying
to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation
to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird
immediately in front.
We’re The
Top Mother/
Daughter Team
Lesson No. 2: If we have as much sense as geese,
we will stay in formation and be willing to accept
help when we need it and give help when it is
needed.
Fact No. 3: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates
back into the formation, and another goose flies in
the point position.
Lesson No. 3: Geese instinctively share the task of
leadership and do not resent the leader.
Fact No. 4: The geese in formation honk from
behind to encourage those up front to keep up their
speed.

Lesson No. 4: We need to make sure our honking
from behind is encouragement and not something
else.
Fact No. 5: When a goose gets sick, is wounded or
is shot down, two geese drop out of formation and
follow it down to earth to help and protect it. They
stay with their disabled companion until is able to
fly again or dies. They then launch out on their own
or with another formation or catch up with the flock.
Lesson No. 5: If we have as much sense as geese,
we, too, will stand by one another in difficult times
and help the one who has dropped out regain his/her
place in the formation.
