#106 Cedar-strip Canoe – handmade by JCS students
•
•
•
Cedar strip canoe - student made and
water tested on the 2014 expedition to
the Green River in Utah.
The canoe is a 16' Chestnut Prospector,
favored by legendary canoeist, Bill
Mason (yes there are such things as
"legendary canoeists!"). The boat
features a good deal of rocker, a three
foot beam, and is ideal for river travel
as well as day trips on the Sound. The
generous volume allows for
comfortable camping, though the boat
also paddles well solo, for those
inclined to solitude and subtlety.
•
The hull is composed of Western Red Cedar, with an accent strip of Alaskan Yellow Cedar captured
between two Honduras Mahogany Strips. Sapele deck plates feature convenient hand holds and the
Yellow Cedar gunwales are stout and lightweight simultaneously. Bronze half-rounds guard both bow and
stern stems.
Matt Nienow, canoe-building guru and JCS' English teacher, is offering two hours of paddling instruction to
whoever wins her! That, and a pair of custom paddles.
Beautiful!
