MOBILITY IN SIEMIANOWICE ŚLĄSKIE, POLAND

The third mobility took place in Siemianowice Śląskie, a city situated in Silesia, a region that
used to be the industrial heart of Poland. Changes within the industry brought about
increasing unemployment, but on the other hand they were favourable for the nature. Polish
team aimed at getting other participants acquainted with some vital environmental issues that
Poland has to deal with.

TUESDAY 21.09.2010
To be honest, it should be 20.09, because we had the pleasure to welcome the Italian team on
Monday. Patricia Lucibello and her students
(one of them, Damian, of Polish origin) spent
the afternoon in Katowice, the centre of Silesia.
The other teams arrived on Tuesday and were
welcomed at the school by headmistress,
Katarzyna Sztyler, teachers, students and
parents of Jan Matejko II Liceum
Ogólnokształcące. We listened to a speech made
by Panagiotis Giakis, the main coordinator of our Comenius project and by the Local
Education Authority representative , who
highlighted the importance of cooperation in
order to achieve common goals and wished all
the students to have a good time in Poland.
Polish coordinator, Anna Wróbel reminded us
what has already been done within the project
and we saw a film presenting Siemianowice
Śląskie.

After the official part, all the guests were treated with home-made Polish dishes. The dish that
was to be remembered most was "Żurek" (a kind of soup) :) Luckily, there was some left for
the Belgians, who actually were a bit late... Unfortunately, the team from Turkey wasn't able
to come.

WEDNESDAY 22.09.2010
The session we had next morning was devoted to systems of educations of the countries
participating in the project, presented by the teachers and the students. It was good to see that
we have something in common, but on the other hand there were also differences, for example
everybody was shocked by the number of educational reforms that take place in Spain.
After the session students were given time to practice the eco-song (one of the tasks to
prepare for the mobility in Poland), and the teachers could discuss what has already been done
as a part of the project and what must be done for the final mobility in Greece. We agreed the
following:
− to present the logos at the meeting in Turkey (No 2);
− to prepare a multilingual dictionary of ecology and environmental problems (schedule
of preparations was agreed);
− to make individual videoclips for the multilingual eco-song plus one common
videoclip made of pictures taken during all the mobilities;
− each school should also prepare a presentation of all the work that has been done
within the project;

After a coffee break the whole group went on a trip to Jura KrakowskoCzęstochowska, called Polish Jurassic Highland or simply Polish Jura, the upland famous
for its limestone structures that contribute to its specific character . Apart from a diversity of
plant and animal species, one can find a unique cultural landscape with archaeological objects
and relics of ancient inhabitation. The guide who showed us round Jura pointed out the
influence of human activity on the original ecosystem, especially on underground waters. The
ruins of medieval castles on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests made a great background for
photos.

THURSDAY 23.09.2010
The morning was extremely fruitful. The whole group participated in the recording session at
a small but professional recording studio in Wojkowice near Siemianowice. Each country in
turn recorded their language version of the song created for the Polish team by our school
band "Zapychacze Czasu".
In the meantime, Polish students were interviewing other teams regarding climatic changes
that take place in their countries and possible changes that ordinary people are ready to make
in order to protect the environment. The interviews and the song will be used in the radio
programme about climate change and our Comenius project, which will be broadcast in one of
the internet radio stations in Siemianowice soon.

After lunch teachers and student visited heat and power plant "Elcho" in
Chorzów (next to Siemianowice). We saw a presentation about the plant that is one of the
most modern heat and power stations in Poland. Then we had a tour around the plant and
could compare theoretical part and the practice. The uniqueness of "Elcho" lies in its
environmental-friendly character. The most popular source of energy in Silesia is still hard
coal. In the past, burning the coal in furnaces of power plants caused the release of exhaust
fumes full of ash. The new state-of-the-art system with special turbines (acting the way a
catalytic converter in a car does) that precipitate impurities from exhaust gases enables to
produce much cleaner energy. In the region that cannot count on water energy or wind power
it means a lot.
The view from the top of "Elcho": post-industrial Silesian landscape. Run-down factories,
coal mines ant other plants, the remains of the decades when the environment was brutally
exploited, are the eyesore. On the other hand, it is impossible not to notice a lot of green areas
around, especially the Park in Chorzów, the biggest artificial park in Europe, created on postindustrial grounds in the 50-ties, now the most popular spot in the whole Silesia.

There was one more task to do when we came back to school. In the
afternoon, after a presentation about local fauna and flora, made by Polish biology teacher
Adam Balon, students from all countries planted bushes and shrubs around the school. This
way we contributed to the project twofold. First of all, the more trees and bushes, the better. In
addition, thanks to them Poland will always remember this project and our cooperation.

FRIDAY 24.09.2010
We visited Cracow, a former capital of Poland and one of its most beautiful cities, where
historical buildings sit next to lively cafes and restaurants. First of all we went to the
"Acquarium" museum. It is a private museum housing for example exhibitions of extinct
bones or lots of fish and reptiles species. Student could even gently touch some animals.
Not only could we admire beatutiful little creatures, but we could also learn something about
ecology.

Market Square and St Mary's church (Kościół Mariacki) – from the tower of the church a
trumpet signal (hejnał in :Polish) can be heard every hour

their goods to townspeople, now is houses a part of National Museum and a gallery with
traditional, folk-like products

One of the buildings of the Jagiellonian University, the second oldest university in Europe.
Unfortunately we didn't see the famous Cracow dragon, but the guide told us the legend:
"Once upon a time there was a kingdom where a nasty dragon kept eating young, lovely girls.
The king was desperate to get rid of the beast, but how? He promised his daughter's hand and
half of the kingdom to the brave man who would be able to kill the dragon. Many tried,
tempted by the beauty of the princess, but in vain. One day, a poor shepherd called Dratewka
(Shoe-tread) conceived a clever idea. He killed a sheep, stuffed it with sulphur and planted
this trap next to the dragon's cave. The beast ate the sheep in one bite. A few second later he
felt that his stomach was burning, so he ran to the river Vistula and started drinking water. He
drank and drank and drank ... and his belly was bigger and bigger ... and suddenly it
exploded! The kingdom was safe then, Dratewka married the princess, and they lived happily
ever after".

The farewell dinner took place in the hotel restaurant. We spent three
extremely busy days, but it was worth the effort. We did something useful together and made
new friends. This is the last evening we have before everybody comes back home.
Students keep chatting with their new friends, exchange gifts and addresses.

SATURDAY 25.09. 2010
On Saturday, 25. September, all the teams set off on their journey home.
The Belgians and the Italians had some spare time and managed to visit German
concentration camp in Auschwitz (Oświęcim). There are some places that just have to be
remembered ...
