A Theorbo comes to Charlotte
Baltimore-based William Feasley
is the proud owner of a new
theorbo. Bill writes “My current
theorbo is a 14 course theorbo
with a stopped string length of
75 mm. It is about six feet long
in its case and is made by Jason
Petty of Brooklyn NY.” Bill will be with us in February to
play his theorbo and baroque guitar.
A trained classical-guitarist, Bill has connections to
Segovia through a masterclass where Bill actually was one of
the few chosen to play. Interested in other plucked string
instruments, Bill has had a theorbo for some years but
decided it was time for a new one.
So what is a theorbo? Why do a limited number of
people play it? Perhaps it died out because of its size. The
theorbo is one of several long-necked lutes, basically a lute
with extra sets of strings, called courses, and a longer second
neck and peg box to accomodate. Theorboes developed
during the late sixteenth century because of the desire by the
Florentine Camerata and the composer Guilio Caccini for
low bass notes to accompany opera and vocal music.

Welcome Gail Ann Schroeder
There is a new viol player in the mountains! This was the
word that began spreading last fall in viola da gamba circles
here in North Carolina. Gail Ann Schroeder had decided to
return to the United States after living in Europe for over 20
years and had chosen Asheville! Viol players from all over
the southeast, including Holly Maurer, have discovered that
she is a great teacher and performer as she has been
recruited to teach at many early music workshops since
settling into Asheville.
Gail’s undergraduate work was at the University of
Michigan where she studied viola da gamba with Enid
Sutherland. Continuing her viol studies with
Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of
Brussels, Belgium, she obtained her First Prize
in 1983 and the Higher Diploma, with
distinction, in 1986. From 1988-2002 Gail was
assistant to Wieland Kuijken at the Brussels
Conservatory where she taught viola da gamba,
didactics of viola da gamba and was director of
the viol consort. Gail has performed extensively as soloist
and with ensembles, including the Huelgas Ensemble,
Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, Leipzig Barokorchester
and Capilla Flamenca.
Gail joins Carolina Pro Musica in October for a program of
French and French-influenced music. The French loved and
used the viol much longer than other musical culture. This
concert will showcase that unique sound. Join us in
welcoming Gail to North Carolina!

Grant Request supported
Carolina Pro Musica has received some
funding to assist with guest artists for our
30th anniversary season! The funding is
made possible, in part, through a Cultural
Project Grant from the Arts & Science
Council and the Grassroots Program of the North Carolina
Arts Council (a state agency). Besides Gail Ann Schroeder
and William Feasley, local baroque violinist Emily Chatham
will make her debut with Carolina Pro Musica. This grant
included additional support by Alliance Francaise of Charlotte, CPCC’s Music Department and St. Martin’s Episcopal
Church. We thank them!

At Opera Carolina’s October, 2005 Fall Gala, three lucky
winners were the highest bidders for a special Italian
dinner cooked and served in their homes by Maestro
James Meena, director of Opera Carolina with a baroque
music prelude provided by Carolina Pro Musica. The
success of those
ventures brought a
repeat request at the
Opera’s 2006 Gala.
