OVERVIEW
La Scuola is an accessible and appealing vacation villa for
those seeking an easy ‘walk-to-town’ location and an
updated, clean lined setting for a holiday in Tuscany. The
house is an inventive restoration of a 1950’s era elementary
school but you would never know it. Everything is bright white
with soaring ceilings, clean lines and lots of good quality,
comfortable furniture indoors and out for enjoying your
company in whatever configuration suits you at the moment.
What makes La Scuola so important is its immediate access
on foot – literally five minutes to one of Tuscany's most
charming and complete hill towns, San Casciano dei Bagni.
This is a town that is very much alive with services and activity;
two seriously good restaurants, a casual pizza joint and the
Bar Centrale where the town gathers for the morning
cappuccino and a bit of gossip. There is also Tuscany’s most
important and luxurious spa. Plus a particularly unique
feature – a piazza with a billion dollar view of the Val d’Orcia.
The view is the same you will enjoy when you are standing on
the wide, broad central outdoor living room/dining room of
La Scuola, visible through a protective screen of tall trees. The
house embraces this lovely outdoor ‘room’ from three sides,
with tall double doors facilitating a seamless and gracious
flow of indoor/outdoor living.
The style of La Scuola is unique, a reflection of the
designer/owners’ pan-continental influences and interests.
Here you have a distinctive meet-up of mid-century Tuscan
schoolhouse restored and decorated with an exceptionally
interesting collection of Asian, primarily Indonesian, art and
antiques. La Scuola is impeccably organized – everything you
need and no more. The point of a stay at La Scuola is that it is
easy – not too much house, direct paved-road access,
available and helpful staff. You can head up hill for an
invigorating run, walk or mountain bike excursion in the soft
early morning light – hopefully making it to the crest of a
nearby ridge where you can see both east into the Val di
Chiana and west into the Val d’Orcia.

This is the chic Val d'Orcia, an area has rightly earned a
following for being big on local food, great wine, spectacular
scenery and especially convenient to various kinds of
experiences and excursions. You are midpoint between
Rome and Florence and the train service from nearby Chiusi
makes a day in the city doable without having to drive
yourselves. Hill-towns are numerous and charming –
Montepulciano and Montalcino for wine, Chiusi and its lower
plain and lake for the Etruscans, Orvieto for the Duomo and
Luca Signorelli’s amazing frescos and/or the child-friendly
tour of the underground city. Drive the Crete Senesi and
check out the double-entendre frescos at Monte Oliveto with
a guide who will engage everyone no matter their age, then
return to the house for a private wine and cheese pairing
before dinner.
La Scuola is an excellent choice for any group wanting the
adaptable assistance of the local staff; Roberto looks after the
house and is flexible about when rooms are cleaned—he
knows you are on vacation. Eleonora is the excellent local
cook who will feed you as she feeds her family at home.
Service for lunch or dinner is included, whichever you prefer,
and Eleonora is happy to cook more often if you like.
Alternatively you can walk into town and shop locally to put
together meals on your own.
The friendly layout of La Scuola – six double rooms ensuite
plus a large gathering room and a kitchen -- is adaptable to
all kinds of groups. Life mostly centers around the pool and
the huge covered outdoor living/dining room with
comfortable cushioned couches and chairs, pool side chairs
and beds, dining table for 12 all in close proximity so the
conversation and the wine can flow without interruption.
Roll-down bamboo shades make the space idyllic in late
afternoon as the setting sun heats the landscape and comes
in low across the pool. As dusk approaches, light the candles
set around the terrace and rest in the glow of a nourishing
vacation well-enjoyed in a land of hospitality and abundance.

several fine restaurants as well as its own luxurious spa.
• For a change of pace, try boating on Lago di Trasimeno or
fishing on Lago di Bolsena.
• Take the train north to Arezzo, a gold-lover's paradise, or
south to the majestic Umbrian town of Orvieto.
• For retail therapy, a personal shopper can be provided to
assist in purchasing antiques, art, fashion, and crafts in
Florence, Siena, Arezzo and local favorites.
• You will certainly want to visit Montalcino and
Montepulciano, two of the most important wine towns in
Tuscany producing Brunellos and Nobiles.
• The Val d’Orcia offers many opportunities for horseback
riding, walking, hiking and biking excursions for people at all
levels of experience.

WHAT TO KNOW
• Daily cleaning is included.
• Breakfast service is included daily beginning at 8:30 am;
preparation of either lunch or dinner daily is included; Service
and cleanup for lunch and dinner is available by separate
payment.
• Welcome dinner is available by separate payment; please

• Cost of fuel to heat the pool is included for rentals from
June through August. Pool heating is available if requested
for rentals in April, May, September or October at an
additional charge. Daily rate will be charged for days
preceding arrival as well as days pool heat is turned on during
your stay.
