The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Elko New
Market has its first community Christmas tree! The permanent
tree was donated by Revak Nursery (24066 Pillsbury Avenue,
Lakeville) and moved to its new home on the vacant lot adjacent
to the Firehouse Grille by Timberland Tree Moving. Currently
about 15’ tall, the tree will grow along with the community and
become a landmark welcoming people to town from the west.
There were several considerations in choosing the location:
availability of an ample power source for lots of lights, proximity
to downtown New Market and a willing private party that would
allow a permanent tree to be planted on its property. New Market
Bank, which owns the vacant lot, invited the Chamber to look
at its lot and place the tree in the most southwesterly corner to
hopefully be left undisturbed when a developer buys the lot.
Firehouse Grille is providing power for the lights. The beauty
of this location is that the downtown commercial district will
ultimately expand out to the tree.
Tree-Lighting Event – Saturday, Dec. 5
Join us for the first-annual tree-lighting event on Saturday, Dec. 5
from 3-5 p.m. The family-focused event will feature pictures with
Santa, refreshments, music, a chance to meet Santa Paws, coloring
sheets for the kids and caroling by local choirs. The mayor will
light the tree at 5 p.m.
In addition to the businesses referenced above, the Chamber
wishes to thank Ace Hardware in New Prague and Lakeville
for donating the lights, the City of Elko New Market Public
Works for caring for the tree and stringing the lights, and Xcel
Energy for its donation to offset electrical costs. Please thank
these businesses by patronizing them whenever possible. Let them
know you appreciate their support of Elko New Market!

Christmas at Christiania has always warmed the hearts of this congregation.
Although we no longer light the real candles on real trees on Christmas Eve
(like they used to), we did bring back a Candles and Carol Service in the 1970s
that became extremely popular for 40 years!
One Christmas in the 1980s, there was a power outage, but it had no effect on
Christiania’s Christmas. No lights were on inside the church, except for the exits
lights, everyone held a lighted candle to sing the carols. As the church filled up,
the sanctuary became filled with the glow of candlelight. The organist moved
to the piano, the hand bells and flute still played by candlelight. As we sang
“Silent Night” at the end of the service, the power came back on!
Christmas is still traditional at Christiania. We still sing carols and light candles
every Christmas Eve. This year, at 3:00pm, 4:30pm and 9:00pm, families and
friends will gather, traditionally, to cradle the meaning of Christmas.
