Does anyone remember
The Want Ad Press? I remember
being introduced to it when I was in
high school. In study hall, guys would
be flipping through that enormous
black and white publication of mostly
automobile classifieds, trying to find
a set of wheels that they could afford
when they turned 17. My dad was
more into the newspaper classifieds.
He would buy The Sunday New York
Times every weekend just to peruse
the “For Sale” automobile section.
I am not even sure why, now that I
think about it, because he never actually bought anything used, at least
during my lifetime. I guess it comes
down to the fantasy part of the car
hobby - considering what you could
have in your garage, if you wanted it
there. There are so many scenarios
that you can explore in your mind,
when you are not thinking too hard
about the details, like where you will
keep an extra car, how much it might
cost to insure and maintain it and
how you might explain its new arrival
to your significant other.
Of course, looking for used cars is
no longer analog and requiring a trip
to the newsstand. You can go bargain
hunting in your pajamas with a cup
of coffee each morning on Craigslist,
eBay, Autotrader, Hemmings or any
number of online and consignment
sites to explore the market. My latest
favorite is an email newsletter-based
website called “Bring A Trailer” (dot
com). Just the name in itself kind
of stirs up a fantasy – one where
you drive off somewhere with your
tow rig and return home with some
jewel of a barn-find that somehow
every other internet-trolling car nut
managed to overlook. The premise
actually kind of started that way,
with a daily distributed email list of
obscure cars that were listed all over
the interwebs and submitted by other
car lovers in hopes a “car guy” will see
and buy the treasures in the email.

Kind of like an animal lover that cannot
take another cat, but wants all of their
friends to consider saving it, these car
people would submit pictures of old
cars in need of a little TLC and a warm
garage. The idea has expanded, though,
to include nicer and rarer cars, and
now BAT even has their own auctions.
Some of the cars listed are ones you
might have never noticed in a printed
classifieds, like a 1987 Turbo Diesel
Mercedes Station Wagon listed today.
Pictures show the car to essentially
look like a well-cared for Mercedes and
the price tag is only $3,000. Or how
about a mint condition Saab Sonnett
for $5,200? Or a Peugeot 205 GTI
(never brought to the US) for $12,500?
Or a very rare Peugeot 504 Pininfarina
Convertible for $10,000 (I did not even
realize that car existed).
In addition to giving sellers another
portal to move their cars, the auctions
have created a kind of cult following of
their own among buyers and watchers.
Unlike eBay where auctions can end
anytime the seller sets them to end,
on Bring a Trailer the auctions usually
end in big groups with the other cars
in the emails. You end up following the
daily updates for the cars on the weekly
auction block and waiting for Friday to
come so you can see where they finished
up.
There have been some surprising sales in the past few months, both
higher and lower than I might have
imagined. There have been some
beautiful Mercedes convertibles, once
$90,000 cars selling below $10,000,
and conversely, Volkswagens that were
$6,000 new now sell for twice their
original price. There are Volvo wagons
with V-8s and 5-speeds, fixable Ferrari 308s for half the normal price, and
restored, military grade Land Rovers for
less than $5,000. It is a lot of fun and it
sure beats flipping pages.
You have to think, though, that all of
this auction activity has caused a bit of
an automobile pricing “bubble.”
Not all that long ago, pricing for cars
was largely determined by a valuation
book or rather by three of them. These
valuation guides were updated regularly
and reflected real sales of cars, sometimes regionally and sometimes nationally. When people would price their cars
for sale, they would look at the guide,
assess their vehicle’s condition and set a
price. This very manual process usually made for a solid and stable market
both for buyers and sellers. Like the
effect that day traders had on the stock
market, though, the frenetic activity and
enormous pool of potential buyers in
today’s markets have had a somewhat
destabilizing effect on prices. The collectors car marketplace has shown recently that people are willing to pay for
whatever it takes to buy certain cars and
models. Maybe it is partially the auction
process and the thrill of “winning” an
auction (or the thrill of not losing) that
is the root cause. Or maybe it is the fact
that the market is now truly worldwide,
bringing buyers from surging economies
together with sellers needing some cash.
A Craigslist ad is as visible in Hong
Kong as it is by your next door neighbor
- powerful reach indeed. (To the best of
my knowledge, the Want Ad Press was
never printed outside of the US.)
It is also likely that some of the
professionally-run and nationally-televised public auto auctions, like BarrettJackson or Mecum Auctions help to
create a false sense of economy on some
models. When a 1969 Corvette crosses
the block on TV at several hundred
thousand dollars, viewers start to believe
that their own cars of similar vintage are
worth the same kind of money.
Whatever the cause, there is no
doubt that anyone with an air-cooled
Porsche made before 1998 is seeing
growth in their automotive portfolio
that would rival the best investments.
How much growth? Well, I suppose
it depend on how large of a window
you would like to look at. About ten
years ago, a nice Porsche 993 (the 1995
to 1998 911s) would fetch somewhere
in the range of $30,000 to $40,000,
with $40,000 buying very nice car. Just
the other day, a Carrera 2S from that
vintage – with a healthy 65,000 miles
– crossed the block for over $85,000 –
more than doubling in value from 2005
and matching or exceeding its original
selling price in 1997. How about a nice,
garden variety 911SC from 1982? This
was the car that Porsche expert Bruce
Anderson deemed to be “bulletproof ”
in nature and that was the subject of the
bestseller, “The Gold Plated Porsche”
by the very funny Stephan Wilkinson.
These cars were around $27,000 brand
new, although they had dipped to a low
in the low teens during the early 2000’s.
Would you believe that a well-loved,
65,000 mile example of that car was sold
for $45,500? That is an amazing 200%
return on investment if you had bought
one at their low. And you are lucky
enough to have a turbo (any 911 turbo
before 1998), you have easily doubled
your money in the past couple of years
and potentially tripled or quadrupled it.
Some are saying the early “middle year”
911s or the 1970’s are the only unloved
models of the bunch. A sale yesterday
of an IROC “tribute” car, made from a
1976 model, crushed that theory with its
$75,000 selling price. I could go on and
on, but you get the point – if it’s aircooled, it is hot.
It is a bit of a blessing and a curse
for air-cooled Porsche owners. On the
one hand, it is great to see your initial
investment double or triple in a such a
short length of time. Working against
those same owners, though, are rising
parts costs and availability for spares
and replacements. Rick Newman, who
used to own a Porsche dismantling
operation along with his brother Dave
Newman, puts the dilemma in simple
terms - “There is no such thing as a 911
parts car anymore.” He mentioned once
upon a time being able to readily find
911 parts donor cars for just around a
thousand dollars. With the recent boom,
however, those same donor cars are now
candidates for restoration. The spare
parts network that those cars once provided are lost, making replacements rare
and costly. Fortunately, these cars were
all made with good parts and they do
not break too often on their own.
For some reason, this recent surge has
been slower to develop in the water-
cooled brethren from similar years. The
928, for example, is rarer than the 911
in terms of production numbers, yet still
is available in most configurations for a
fraction of their original cost. They are
complicated cars, though, with intricate
electrical diagrams and lots of engineering that was perhaps too ahead for its
time. The tight engine bay, occupied
by the enormous V-8s, make
working on them a mechanic’s nightmare. It
is a car that sometimes requires far
too many service
hours for a given
job than a typical
owner is willing
to pay. Compared
with the 911, the
928 also has been
trading hands at surprisingly low amounts
for many years now on
eBay. It is pretty amazing to
see a car that once sold in the late
1980s for close to $90,000 (adjusted for
inflation, well over $110,000), trading
via “buy it now” for well under $10,000.
Similarly, the Italian counterpart,
“brother from another mother” Ferrari
308s had also bottomed out at a relative low amount a couple of years ago
at $20,000 or so. (You can also add the
‘80s Mercedes SEC models and BMW
6-series coupes to that list.) This led
to a lot of those examples being sold to
people that essentially wanted a $10,000
to $20,000 European supercar at Honda
Civic pricing. Problem was, they were
not prepared to pay champagne service
costs on their bargain rides and so a
lot of the maintenance was delayed or
simple not completed. Caveat emptor.
Nevertheless, many experts expect
that the 944 and 928 models will eventually be swept upward in value, partially
aided by the thinning of the herd from
attrition of running cars still on the
road. I have seen a few very beautiful
examples of 944 coupes in the $5,000
to $7,000 range - more than fair money
for what was in its day, perhaps the
best handling car on the planet, not to
mention just plain awesome-looking in
your rear view mirror with those bulging front flares. So go and get ‘em while
they’re not too hot! I can predict in the
not-too-distant future that we may be
talking about $20,000 944 coupes, espe-
cially if the 911 prices continue to climb
into the stratosphere.
So are these rising prices just a
“bubble,” one that will eventually pop
and send prices on these cars crashing
back down to Earth, or is the growth in
value the new normal? While I personally do not see the rate of increase as a
sustainable future, I do not see values
coming back down, either. There
just are not enough cars
when you consider how
many were crashed,
parted-out already or
shipped off to Timbuktu. One trend
that I am happy
to report that does
not seem to be
developing just this
year is a retraction
of these older models
by their members at
our club’s events. At just
about any of our events, you
will see a well-represented population of air-cooled Porsches, escalating
pricing be damned. At one of our club’s
autocrosses, for example, club member
Ken Ernsting brought both his dropdead gorgeous 991 GT3 and his vintage
long hood 911 racer, finished in a
flawless orange paint. I said to a friend,
half-joking that Ken brought his very
expensive car and he also brought his
GT3. Scary to think, but that long hood
might actually equal or eventually pass
that 991 in terms of value within the
next couple of years. Parked around the
paddock at that same autocross, by the
way, were at least five 964 series 911s,
about four or five 993 series cars and a
whole host of older 911s. Fastest time
of the day, in fact, was set by a 1982
911SC Euro Coupe, owned and driven
by Rick Newman.
One of these days, that BAT email
is going to hit my inbox on the “wrong
day,” in a time of extreme weakness
and I am going to end up with a 944
or some other car in my driveway, mark
my words. Practically speaking, I simply
do not have the space for another
four-tired toy. On the other hand, how
can you turn away such an investment
opportunity? It would be downright
financially irresponsible to not at least
consider these cars when they appear
in your email inbox. And tomorrow is
another morning.

The Nominating Committee is charged with preparing a slate of candidates for NNJR’s Officers and Governors for the year
2016. Any NNJR member wishing to be considered by the Nominating Committee as a candidate for an elected office must
make his or her wishes known to the Nominating Committee. Please consider that Article X of the Bylaws requires the
Nominating Committee to post its slate of Nominees on our web site (http://www.nnjr-pca.com/index.php) during the first
week of August; the list will also be published in the September and October issues of Porscheforus. The September issue has
an August 1 publishing cutoff date.
Article X of the Bylaws provides a method for a region member to have his or her name placed on the ballot for any elected
regional office by submitting a written notice and a supporting Petition. The Petition must be signed by twenty-five active or
family active NNJR members and submitted to the Nominating Committee no later than September 1, 2015. The names of
any such individuals and the offices to which they have been nominated by Petition will be published in the October issue of
Porscheforus.
Pursuant to Article X of the Bylaws, election of Officers and Governors shall occur at the Region’s Annual Meeting. Voting will
be by written ballot if there is more than one candidate for an office. No write-in votes will be allowed. Election of officers will
be conducted by an Election Committee appointed by the President and approved by the Board of Governors. If there is more
than one candidate for an office, a voting member may obtain an Absentee ballot by written request to the Chairperson of the
Election Committee by either letter or email at least fourteen (14) days before the day of the election. Any such Absentee ballot
must be received by the Chairperson of the Election Committee by noon on the day of the election. All members are urged to
review Article X of the Bylaws to assure a complete understanding of the election process, including the use of an Absentee
ballot. The Bylaws are available on the NNJR website under “About NNJR.”
Notice of Annual Meeting: Elections of Officers and Governors shall occur at the Annual Meeting, scheduled for Wednesday,
November 11, 2015. Any potential agenda items proposed for the Annual Meeting, in addition to the Elections, must be
submitted to the Board of Governors in sufficient time before September 1 to allow Board consideration of proposed agenda
items to be published in the October issue of Porscheforus.

Hitting Apexes
If you have ever attended a DE at Pocono
Raceway, you know that the
Pocono weather can be unpredictable and quite fickle. When we
used to hold our April Pocono
events, we got everything from
sun, rain, fog, sleet and snow. And
that was just in Turn 3 as Turn 1
could have completely different
weather.
This was no different for our
2015 Ladies Day and 2-day regular DE which was held on June
26-28. The forecast for Ladies Day
was rain and clouds, but we had
a wonderful day of sun and low
humidity.

a blast. The ladies attended
their morning classroom
and then moved on to their
mini car control clinic. The
clinic was fun to watch
as you can see the drivers
getting faster and faster in
the VERY LONG slalom.
The braking exercise was
a hoot as this particular
group of ladies really put
the hammer down and flew
down the straight ending
in an “emergency” foot to
the floor brake. They then
moved on and drove in their
respective Green and Yellow
run groups and really did
quite well.
The feedback
from the
instructors
has been very
positive and
we are hoping that
these drivers join us at
another NNJR event
in the future.
The rest of the run
groups went off without a hitch and everyone got their four,
24 minute sessions.
The weather and the
track conditions we
absolutely perfect and
made a great day even
better (I even set a
personal best on the
North Course; 58.2
seconds).
It was off to dinner next – the
famous Paul Miller Ladies Day
Dinner. We started off with a happy
our and some great Hors D Oeuvres
and then a buffet dinner.
Then came Saturday, and
the famous Pocono weather (uh oh).
Well, let us just say it could have
been better but with a bit of positive
spirit and creativeness, most everyone had a great time and kept dry.
We did manage to get most runs in
but had to call it quits once the rain
got too heavy. One of our Instructors (Sandy – Knute’s daughter) had
a smile on her face no matter what.
Maybe that was because she had
dry feet. LOL
Some of our other Instructors
found a good use for their balaclavas and made good use of the
down time and the rain.
I guess he figured he could do
something productive and use the
nice soft water (rain) as a final
rinse. We were trying to get him
to wash our cars without success.
Oh well.
At some point it did get a bit
cooler out so people found lots of
different ways to stay warm.
All-in-all, we did have some
great fun and everyone made
the best of the good and the bad
weather.
We have some great events
coming up and I hope to see you
out there on track.

What’s Autocross Like, and What Can You Learn?

There’s a lot more than meets the eye
“Racing in a parking lot”.
There it is, the most succinct explanation I can come up with. And it is
accurate too, but woefully incomplete.
NNJR has roughly 2500 members.
And at each autocross Sunday in the
Meadowlands (it is usually Sunday),
about 40 of us show up, along with
30 or so enthusiasts from other clubs,
or no club at all, who like to run with
NNJR. Who wouldn’t?
Now, 40/2,500ths is a small number: 1.6% to be precise; which means
that 98.4% of you do not come out to
autocross much, or ever. That got me
to asking, “why?.” Well, I have heard
many of the reasons: “It’s a long day”
– true, but about 3x shorter than even
a short DE. “not enough driving time
in the day” – we all agree – so please
read the web site or last month’s article
– we think we have that one vastly
improved. “It might hurt my car” –
unlikely – maybe some tire wear if you
are a hot-shoe, but then if you are such
a hot-shoe, you are already out there,
tapping your foot and wondering what
is keeping Grant in bed at 5am. “Racing in a parking lot? What is so great
about that?” – aha. Let us explore that
a little: the parking lot is the magic

you, your tires and your car – and when
all goes badly, simply spin and give
everyone some entertainment. No harm
comes to your car, by the way – once
they start to skid the coefficient of friction falls – so it is less strain, not more.
Physics says so.
Let us think about what I just
said. On public roads there are myriad
reasons to drive carefully – unknown
conditions, other cars, children and
animals to name a few. Did I mention
police? On a racetrack, if you join us for
DE and you should, you will learn how
to safely approach high speeds with a
strong emphasis on NOT leaving the
track and NOT spinning the car. In
fact, if you do so more than twice, you
may be asked to sit out for a while or

even go home. This is not punishment

rather to learn how to approach the
limits, maintain yourself near the limit
and maintain control all the time.
My take on this is that autocross,
that “parking lot” think, can actually be
MORE exhilarating than a racetrack,
albeit in 70-second doses. It lets you
attack limits, experience the agony of
defeat, and the absolute thrill of catching that slide or holding that slip angle
trough a sweeper. It lets you learn how
hard you can brake and forces you to
brake properly – first setting the weight
on the front tires and then quickly yet
smoothly applying maximum stopping power. It teaches you to think fast,
make the right decisions under pressure
and generally learn all the right things.

Now let us talk about a more cerebral side to autocross – the real craft of
the sport. Winners in autocross do not
blithely go out there at 10/10ths and
pray. They “read” the course, develop
a strategy and figure out the line for
each turn. The day begins early in part
because every good autocrosser knows
to get there early and walk the course
as many times as possible – learning the
turns, yes, but more importantly asking “how do I best drive this?” Here is
another benefit compared to DE alone;
in DE you are taught the line by an instructor and learn it over time through
repetition, while in autocross you must
learn the line, right now -- and the
line is different for different drivers,
different cars and different weather
conditions. It teaches you to visualize a
line, think about the physics and get it
right. How useful is that on a new track
or more importantly, on the street or
maybe in snow?
The mechanics are fairly simple. The
attendees are divided into two groups
or “heats” and while one heat drives,
the others work the course, run timing,
re-set cones, call in violations (points),
stage cars, etc. By the way while you are
working, you have a fantastic opportunity to watch what others do, have fun
and learn from them. I look back fondly
on the days when I shagged cones
rather than have my head down, like
Schroeder over his piano on the computer. We then break for a brief lunch
and do it again. Then give out awards,
which this year are quite nice! (psst:
secret – come out and see).
We run the course single-file,
spaced to keep cars from interfering
with each other, which greatly aids in
safety and simplicity. Whenever you
run, you have the opportunity – novice or expert – to take an instructor
or coach with you. Make sure you tell
them what you hope to learn – maybe
it is craft, maybe the line, maybe car
control, …. Tell them!
I hope this has opened your
eyes a bit to the opportunity that is
autocross with NNJR. If you were apprehensive, I hope it makes you less so.

“All in the Details Workshop”

concours for the season on September 20, it is called the Concours on
the Green because it will be held on
the lawn of the Robb Francis Estate

We had a new workshop format on
June 14. It was labeled as the Complete
Detailing Workshop. This workshop
was hosted by Chris Coviello and Matt
Loeffler at their shop called All in the
Details. It is a shop located adjacent
to High Marques on the west side
of Morristown. They are professionals specializing in detailing high end
sports and touring cars. The workshop
was a joint event with the Mercedes
Benz club and was a complete description of how Chris and Matt approach
detailing a customer’s car.
The approach is a series of steps in
the following sequence:
• Clean and treat wheels and wheel
wells
• Clean all of the nooks and crannies of
the car’s exterior
• Wash the complete exterior
• Clay Bar the exterior finish of the car
• Machine polish the exterior finish
• Apply sealant or wax to the exterior
• Clean the glass inside and out
• Vacuum the carpeting and floor mats
• Clean and treat the leather and vinyl
upholstery
After looking at this list of tasks you
might think that a complete detail is a
big job. You would be right especially if
this is the first time the car has undergone a complete detail. If you want to
take on the job, an approach might be
to take on one step at a time.
The All in the Details guys recommend using and electric power
washer with an operating pressure of
about 1500 psi. They definitely caution
against using the gas engine power
washers that operate at 2500 to 3000
psi. These machines can damage the
finish and the trim on a car. They also
recommend use of the Rupes LHR
21ES random orbital type polishing
machine. These two tools can take
some of the drudgery out of a complete
detail job.
For wheels the boys recommend
using a PH neutral cleaner such as the
Sonax spray on cleaner. It is especially
important to select
the right cleaner
for polished on
anodized aluminum wheels such
as the popular
Fuchs Porsche
wheels. (See

Before doing a
full exterior wash,
they recommend
spraying some
cleaner such as
P21 Total Auto
Wash in all of the
exterior nooks
and crannies of
the car followed
by a thorough
rinse by a hose
or power washer.
This should then
be followed by a
complete exterior
wash.
For a car that
has not been kept washed and waxed
frequently, it may be necessary to do
a clay bar cleaning of the finish. This
will remove and deposits on the paint
surface.
Next comes polishing which can be
done by hand or with a random orbital
polishing machine. This is to take out
minor surface scratches before application of as sealant or wax. Sealants
offer longer lasting protection while a
good carnuba wax will provide a deeper
looking shine. (See Photo of Matt with

For cleaning the glass inside and
out, they recommend Invisible Glass
and Microfiber towels for the best job.
Interior vacuuming is straight forward and should be done regularly to
maintain the carpeting and any cloth
upholstery. Do not forget to check out
the headliner.
Leather upholstery needs to be
cleaned using a saddle soap type of
product followed by application of a
leather preservative which will prevent
the leather from drying out resulting in
cracking.
Chris and Matt recommend a professional detail for a car that has been
somewhat neglected but has potential.
Following that, it is much easier to
keep a car looking well by keeping it
clean and protected by a good wax job.
One last point that the pros made
was that contrary opinion of some
others, they prefer the exclusive use

The New Hope Automobile Show in beautiful Bucks County, PA has become a showplace
for a wide variety of antique and classic vehicles. Including the Porsche Marque. On Sunday,
August 9, 2015 the Porsche Division will be displayed and judged for an official New Hope
award and NNJR championship points. We will use the standard NNJR score sheets and
engines will be judged. All entrants must have a fire extinguisher on site. This division is
limited to all Porsche sports cars through model year 2000. All Porsches newer than model
year 2000 (no Cayenne’s or Macan’s) are also welcome to attend and to earn 2015 NNJR
championship series points. Porsches will be judged by veteran NNJR judges.
Registration in Division P can be completed online; the registration fee is $25 per show car.
You can register or download a registration form by going to
www.newhopeautoshow.com. Show vehicles not pre-registered will be admitted until a 250
car limit is reached and will be required to pay $30. Due to the expected high participation,
it is possible vehicle not pre-registered will not be admitted.
Other marques competing on Sunday include: Alfa Romero, Aston Martin, Austin Healey,
Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz, Morgan, Rolls Royce and
other foreign exotics. This promises to be an exciting and entertaining day for all car
enthusiasts.

New World? Old World? What’s the difference?
The term Old World refers to wines made in countries that are considered the “birthplaces” of wine; basically Europe and the Middle

This fall on September 26 from 1 to 3pm at Jay Coates The Popular Mechanic, the Tech Committee will host its Fall workshop. The theme will be
Fall Radiator Maintenance for Boxster, Cayman, 996 and 997 Porsches.
We plan to have on hand a Boxster and a 997 for workshop demonstration, which will include the following:

Radiator Cleaning and Leaf Removal before winter storage

Duct Work and Water Drain cleaning

A comprehensive handout for all Porsches that maps water drains
and how to access them for cleaning

2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder

attended NYAS Press Preview Day for P4US.
PCA VIP Preview on Friday morning offered the public first
look at the most powerful Boxster available for purchase.
Powered by a 911 Carrera S 3.8-liter flat-six mated with a
six-speed manual, it makes 375 hp reducing 0-60 to just 4.3
seconds, allowing a top speed of 180mph.
Definitely will necessitate Rally- enthusiast John Bleimaier wearing his leather driving helmet at those speeds should
he and Marina P. elect to step-up from 914. MSRP= $82K
New Ford GT 3.5-liter V6 Aluminum & Carbon Fiber
Porsche will have plenty of contenders for coolest car,
Ford offering its racecar for the street with 600 hp at $400K
in late 2015- a 250 plan-build.
Two turbo chargers, carbon ceramic brakes, 7-speed dual
clutch automatic by Getrag. This car should compete with
the Ferrari 488 GTB.

Aston Martin Vulcan
This track only Aston Martin supercar producing 800 hp
fronted a 7-car display with the CEO detailing the importance of North American market to Aston’s
“Second Century Plan”.
The 102-year old sport car maker, with James Bond
provenance could cause a few of the 918 intenders to the
Porsche 918 Spyder to pause. Pause maybe, but a 918 Spyder, despite its 887-hp derived from a 4.6 liter V8 plus two
electric motors, is also street-able, capable of 0-60 in 2.2
seconds with a top speed of 200-plus mph.
That said, Aston remains formidable, and NNJR
members attending LeMans/Stuttgart Presentation in 2/15
may recall reference to Aston performance in GT class at
LeMans. Tasteful orange color cues drew attention

New McLaren 570S Sports Series
This was McLaren’s debut of its newest Sports Series,
“most usable” McLaren to date. A Supercar that includes a
cup-holder, Bluetooth and a 7” NAV screen.
At 2875 lbs, its twin-turbo 3.8 V8 562 hp 7-speed can
hurl supercar from 0-62 in 3.2 sec, with a top speed of 204.
MSRP= $185k
Alfa Romeo 4C Spider
With a racing history dating back to 1911, Alfa marked
its 20-year USA return with a showcase of past iconic models in an interesting display setting.
Its two For Sale entries are a tiny coupe and Spider (different spelling from Boxster) called 4C. Mostly aluminum
and carbon fiber, the 4C has a turbocharged 1.7-liter 4-cyl,
237-hp, 6-speed dual-clutch automatic.
MSRP starts at $55k.
As an aside, Italian Alfa models had the most viewed images on the NYAS website

Lamborghini did not have its own NYAS booth, but display by metro dealership featured a Huracan and Aventador
next to a Veyron & Koenigsegg- across from McLaren.
These low-volume exotics certainly attract enthusiastic
photo-seekers, but an observation is made that Porsche models attracted as many lookers as any display. Which makes
sense, with no other US car club having as many members
as PCA, including the very high-membership regions of the
metro area, like NNJR and CVR.

5am in order to meet Bob at 7:30am
at his home in Macungie, Pa and then
follow him with his ‘62 1600 Super
Coupe to Hershey, not expecting more
than a great Porsche show and some
time with an old friend that we see all
too seldom.

I entered the car and wandered
around looking at all the great cars
including Murray and Akemi Kane’s
superb black 1992 911 Turbo and Len
Coloccia’s and Linda Pell’s great 1974
red 914. Finally the clock struck 1pm
and they began announcing the winners. Len and Linda took a second in
their class. Murray and Akemi took a
first in their class, and shockingly to
us our sweet little 968 took a first in
its class. Obviously this all spoke well
for the cars and owners from NNJR. I
am also happy to report that Bob, who
caused us to be at the event, won “Best
In Show” with his stunning and fully
documented red 356. Much later we
arrived home tired and sunburned with
big smiles on our faces.
NNJR was also well represented
on the vendor side with Jerry Manna,
Anthony Cristello, Dick Fell, Mick
Carr, and John and Donna Paterek all
hawking Porsche parts of every persuasion. If you are looking for a great
day of classic Porsches or shopping
for Porsche parts, this is a great event
to attend. They even seem to get the
weather right for the occasion.
