BPW Engineering is the creative force behind all our running gear solutions. It is backed up by the technical expertise of
the specialists in our research and development department. There, not only prototypes are brought to series-production
readiness, but BPW also produces individual, made-to-measure components for running gear modules and complete
running gear systems for customers’ orders.
Our engineering work includes detailed driving and test facility trials during which units such as axle beams, bearing units,
brakes, air suspension or running gear electronics are tested for function, load capacity, wear, durability and ease of maintenance. This yields valuable knowledge that you can benefit from as well. Our experts will be happy to advise you – in a

Optimum corrosion protection for all BPW components.
Running gear from BPW offers robust technology for a long vehicle life. An important quality feature of our products is
cataphoretic dip-coating with zinc-phosphating (KTLZn). This is a special surface finish that provides 5 times more effective
corrosion protection than conventional painting processes. Thin layer corrosion protection processes such as Dacromet®
and Geomet®, as well as chromated surface protection systems, can withstand even the hardest stone impacts.

Cataphoretic dip-coating with zinc-phosphating (KTLZn) provides a deep shield and meets the most exacting requirements for corrosion protection. For example, KTLZn-coated BPW components can withstand a 504-hour salt-spray
mist test without any problems. BPW is also the first choice when it comes to thin-film corrosion protection processes: As well as using the familiar, tried-and-tested Dacromet® coating containing chrome VI, BPW is already adopting the EU end-of-life vehicle directive 2000/53/EC (which is at present only mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonne
gross weight rating) and is in some cases using chrome VI-free coating systems (e.g. Geomet®) instead of the previous systems containing chrome VI. These systems can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way, and are
not harmful to health. The result is convincing in all respects: Corrosion, cleaning chemicals and even stone impacts
don’t stand a chance. And the components are ready to be installed without requiring further painting.
How it works
Dacromet® and Geomet®: An inorganic, silvery coating is applied to the vehicle components
using an immersion process involving an aqueous suspension of zinc and aluminium flakes.
The coating is allowed to dry and then baked on at about 300 °C.
KTLZn: The vehicle components are given a painstaking 10-zone pre-treatment (including
zinc-phosphating), after which they are immersed in the cataphoretic dip-coating tank. A direct electric current is applied in order to coat the components with a water-soluble epoxy
resin varnish. This coating is then baked on at 185 °C. Result: The best possible corrosion
protection, even without a topcoat of paint.
The computer-controlled BPW cataphoretic dip-coating and zincphosphating plant represents the cutting edge in the application of
corrosion protection in car production and sets the global standard for coating quality in trailer chassis and suspension systems.

Camber is defined as the angle (A) between the wheel centre plane and
a line drawn perpendicular to the plane of the carriageway. The camber
is positive if the top of the wheel is angled outwards when the axle is
unladen.

Toe is the angle (B) between the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and the
wheel centre plane. Toe-in means the front part of the wheel is turned

The U-shaped connection comprising the axle and flexible trailing arms
noticeably reduces unwanted rolling movements and reduces the load on
the vehicle frame. This principle of connecting the axle and trailing arms
together acts as a stabiliser to cut down rolling movements. In this way,
air-sprung suspension systems from BPW achieve safe driving properties
as well as a high level of driving comfort.
The trailing arm connects the axle to the vehicle frame via the air suspension hanger brackets and the air bag. BPW trailing arms (single or twin
leaf springs) are highly flexible spring steel elements. They are hot-rolled
from one piece, after which they are shot-peened and cataphoretic dipcoating and zinc-phosphating.
Trailing arms absorb a great deal of torsional forces applied to the axle
beam. Various trailing arm versions permit individual equalisation – for
example for axle load, track, spring centre, centre of gravity height and
driving comfort. In every situation, their stiffness and flexibility are exactly
matched to the vehicle and its application. This reduces the stress on the
body and ensures that the vehicle achieves a long service life. The catch
plate offers the necessary safety reserves if the worst should come to the
worst. Long-life steel-rubber-steel bushes (up to 4 times the service life
of rubber-steel bushes) offer maintenance-free mounting of the trailing
arm. The axle is exactly controlled, while tyre wear and operating costs
are both reduced.

Air suspension hanger brackets transfer all control, braking and acceleration forces from the axle to the vehicle frame. Short, adjustable BPW
air suspension hanger brackets with integrated shock absorber mounts
make installation easier, reduce weight and cut the torsional load on the
vehicle’s frame. The vehicle manufacturer benefits from straightforward
cross-bracing options at the interface between the frame and the hanger
bracket. Rapid unit alignment is possible using BPW hanger brackets with
integrated track setting. Production tolerances on the vehicle can be equalised or wheelbases corrected without the need to unfasten the U-bolts (axle
tracking).
BPW air suspension hanger brackets are available in steel as well as in
high-grade steel and aluminium on request.
What is more, with the bolted Airlight II air suspension hanger bracket,
BPW is offering manufacturers the opportunity of coating vehicle frames
without air suspension hanger brackets, and not connecting them to the
complete axle unit until the final assembly stage. Cold joining technology
allows the bolt-on hanger bracket to be mounted on standard frames,
including aluminium frames, with bottom boom width as little as 120 mm
– no changes are necessary on the frame.
The shock absorber reduces vibration in the vehicle body and ensures
greater driving comfort and road safety. That’s because the wheels stay in
contact with the road and dynamic wheel load fluctuations are reduced.
BPW uses various types of shock absorber to guarantee the best possible
damping in each case. High-volume BPW shock absorbers are adapted
to the vehicle, the overall height and the range of applications. The rubber bushes of BPW shock absorbers can be replaced. This is much less
expensive than buying a new shock absorber.
The axle is connected to the trailing arm using the axle connection comprising: spring plates, spring pads, segments and U-bolts. Clamped, positive-locking axle connections ensure an even force transfer into the axle
appropriate to the degree of load. This is only possible with square axle
beams which therefore offer a long service life. The connection parts are
attached at the reinforced radii of the axle beam (no welded connection).
BPW uses U-bellows because of their spring characteristics. They roll
over the rolling piston during compression.

spring bolt is a new feature that replaces the M 30 spring bolt, thereby offering extra safety because it increases the

Axle lifts from BPW.
The device for a long tyre life.
As an option, multi-axle vehicles can be equipped with an axle lift to reduce the wear on the tyres when driving
unladen or with a light cargo. BPW offers axle lifts for positioning in the middle or at the sides. All BPW axle lifts are
compatible with the Auto-Drop system. It automatically lifts up to two axles on a tri-axle suspension (when unladen)

and lowers them again (when laden).
Locating the axle lift at the side is recommended for lifting the
first axle and in vehicles with limited ground clearance, high
axle loads or long suspension travel. The double-sided lift
(for air-sprung axles up to 12 tonnes) does not need any space
in front of the air suspension hanger brackets or in the middle
of the vehicle. It can be fitted at any time to any axle position offering the convincing benefits of low weight and good
ground clearance. Both the central axle lift device using a
lifting bag and the BPW central lift with bellows fitted in the
middle of the vehicle can lift one or more suspension axles and
are integrated within the space of the axle unit. Their compact
design means they are preferred for use in vehicles with limited
ground clearance and small tyres (e.g. pallet box trailers with
single tyres).

it’s the hanger brackets, the shock absorber attachments or the crossbraces, everything is integrated to save space. Even steering axles can be

In road/rail/ship combined transport, trailers with vented air suspension systems are lifted by gantry cranes or manoeuvred by marshalling tractors. Conventional air suspension systems are at risk of damage to their air bags. The
patented Combi airbag from BPW (European patent 0 554 573 B1) provides an effective safeguard against folding
and creasing of the air bag and thereby guarantees a long service life.
Function: The air bag of a Combi airbag is divided into two
parts: The air bag

the visible contacts have been moved inside the housing for optimum protection against dirt.

In BPW test facility trials, components are subjected to pulsating or alternating forces. Various test programmes can be
used for this, such as driving along a test route. As a result,
operational strength and component flexibility can be tested
under realistic conditions. This reduces the development

Using the 12-channel modular test rig, BPW can simulate all
vertical, transverse and longitudinal forces as well as braking, steering and pitching torques that can act on the running
gear during operation. As a result, off-road tracks can be
simulated in real time and test track drives can be reduced.

BPW prepares EC/ECE brake calculations on the basis of

The BPW type plate.
Your axle‘s identity document.
Every BPW axle has a type plate. It is affixed on the centre of the axle beam, facing to the rear of the vehicle. The
information on the type plate enables you to order replacements for wearing parts at any time or – after an accident,
for instance – the entire axle.

Certificate type
The BPW type name (see axle type) is composed of a letter
ing on the wheel brake. The barcode used has the standard
group and a number group. The letter group identifies the
format code 39 and can be read using any barcode scanner
type of axle and suspension version as well as defining the
normally encountered in the industry. The left barcode con-

With BPW, everything is in the right place.
This means things that belong together fit
together.
In drum braked axles from BPW, the air cylinder brackets are welded onto the axle beam. They are used for accommodating diaphragm and spring-type cylinders. The offset hole pattern of the BPW air cylinder bracket permits
optimum positioning of the brake cylinder for any lever length. In addition, the air cylinder brackets have marks for
additional hole patterns when using small brake cylinders with narrower stud spacings. Dirt, water and snow can
escape through a gap between the air cylinder bracket and axle beam.

Air suspension installation exactly according to
plan.
BPW supplies the air installation kit and the corresponding installation diagram for the particular application. The
installation diagrams show the valves in what is referred to as the ISO view. The letters and numbers of the valves
printed inside boxes on the installation diagrams are identical to the markings on the valves themselves. That makes
installation very straightforward. BPW‘s warranty will be invalidated if installation is performed incorrectly by third
parties.

In vehicles whose payloads are unloaded rapidly, e.g. tippers, container
vehicles, steel strip vehicles, etc., stroke limiting is required in the form of
catch straps or rapid venting of the air bags.
1. Stroke limiting is performed using an air suspension valve with integrated shut-off or by a separate shut-off valve. The shut-off valve is
bolted onto the vehicle frame and is connected to the axle by means of
a return spring hooked onto the draw pin. Once the maximum stroke
height has been reached, the air supply to the air bags is blocked thereby limiting the stroke.
2. Stroke limiting can also be performed using catch straps. When installing, make sure the catch strap does not chafe on the axle beam.
Crane, rail or ship transport
In vehicles for crane, rail or ship transport, BPW recommends air bags
with a split piston – the Combi Airbag II system. No stroke limiting is required when the combination air bag is used, providing stroke limiting is
not expressly stipulated in the technical documents.
Depending on the version, the limiting function is in the shock absorbers in axles with a lifting and lowering device without stroke limiting by
shut-off valves or catch straps. The shock absorbers are equipped with a
traction stop, however they are not designed for stop forces from approx.
8.5 bar air bag force.

thanks to the low rolling resistance along the road. At tandem axle suspensions one axle an be lifted , at tri-axle
suspension maximal two axles can be lifted.
With steering axle
A „rigid axle/steering axle“ ratio of 1:1 is permitted in vehicles
with series LL self-steering axles. As a result, one rigid axle
can also be lifted in tri-axle suspension systems. It is advantageous to lift the first suspension axles since this gives
greater ground clearance (body lean) and a longer wheelbase – thereby achieving a more stable driving behaviour.

defining a turning corridor within which the vehicle must stay
when driving in a circle – this must be adhered to!

Lifting axles are controlled either electro-pneumatically (electric switch), with manual pneumatic control (hand-operated
