SPRING TRAINING
All’s well for Leake
in first appearance
By C. Trent Rosecrans
[email protected]
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Mike Leake
joked that he was happy to get into a
few full counts in his second inning
of work on Friday just because it
gave him a chance to throw more
pitches.
Making his spring debut, Leake
threw a total of 27 pitches – 12 in the
first inning when he gave up a run on
two hits and another 15 in the second,
when he retired the White Sox in
order. Leadoff man Adam Eaton
doubled off of Leake to start the
game and he was driven in by Adam
Dunn, who hit a hard liner off the
glove of third baseman Chris Nelson
to score the game’s first run.
“They were aggressive, so it
made it tough to get into a count with
them,” Leake said. “The one Dunner
hit was a good pitch, but he’s a hitter
that likes to jump on that first pitch.
I’m not worried about that stuff on
the first outing.”
What was most important was
that Leake felt good afterward, having missed his first start of the
spring because of an abdominal issue.
“It felt good, they were just aggressive that first inning. My body
felt fine,” Leake said. “If this were
in-season, I’d be pitching through it,
but it’d be stupid to try to work
through it in this setting.”
Leake said he expects to start
when his number comes up again on
Wednesday when the Reds travel to
Scottsdale to play the Rockies. For
now, he’s happy to have been on the
mound and feel good.
“You can’t really go based off two
innings because you’re not getting
too deep or facing guys multiple
times, so you feel like a reliever for
the first few outings,” Leake said.
“It’s in a positive direction and I feel
good to be back on the field.”
Reds starters pitched two innings
the first time through the rotation
and three the second. Leake said he
should have plenty of time to catch
up.
REMEMBERING JOBE: Reds lefthander Lee Hyde is speaking just for
himself, but any number of people in
professional baseball could say the
same thing about Dr. Frank Jobe, “I
wouldn’t be playing if it weren’t for
(him).”
Jobe died on Thursday, the Dodgers announced. Jobe was the first
doctor to perform ulnar collateral
ligament reconstruction surgery –
better known as “Tommy John surgery.”
Hyde, a reliever who pitched at
Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A
Louisville last season, had the surgery in 2007. The surgery was first
performed by Jobe in 1974.
Hyde has the tell-tale scar on his
left elbow from the surgery that has
rescued the career of hundreds of
baseball players.
Also in the club is Reds righthander Alfredo Simon.
“That surgery has done everything for me,” Simon said. “Before I
had the surgery, I couldn’t even
through a ball. ... After that, nothing’s bothered me.”
BEATO IMPRESSES: Reliever Pedro Beato entered Friday’s game
having allowed just two hits and no
walks over three innings of work,
striking out four.
“I’ve been really impressed with
Pedro Beato, he’s done a nice
job,” Price said. “He’s
come into camp
ready to go,
he’s competing for a
spot,
he’s
been sharp with his fastball, breaking ball and split. He’s another guy
that’s been an eye-opener for me.”
The Reds picked up Beato, 27, off
of waivers from the Red Sox in October. Beato, a former Rule 5 pick of
the Mets, pitched in 10 games for
Boston last season. He was 1-1 with a
3.60 ERA with the Red Sox and 5-3
with a 2.98 in 34 appearances in Triple-A.
FATHER TODD: Third baseman
Todd Frazier left camp to be with his
wife at their home in New
Jersey. The couple
is expecting
their first
child
soon.

WHITE SOX 4, REDS 3
THE ARMS
Mike Leake gave up a run on two hits in
two innings to the White Sox. Aroldis
Chapman gave up a run on two hits and
a hit batter in his two innings of work.
Meanwhile in Peoria, where the Reds
defeated the Mariners 10-9, Brett Marshall threw three scoreless innings, allowing four hits and walking three, but
striking out four batters.
Daniel Corcino’s nightmare of a spring
continued, allowing five runs in 2⁄3 of an
inning, putting his ERA at 58.50 this
spring.
THE BATS
In Peoria against the Mariners, Chris
Heisey hit two home runs, while Brandon
Phillips hit his first of the spring. Billy
Hamilton walked once and stole two
bases against Seattle.
In Goodyear, Jay Bruce was 2-for-3
against the White Sox with his first home
run of the spring and a double. Roger
Bernadina also doubled.
THE REST
Reds bench coach Jay Bell, hitting coach
Don Long and pitching coach Jeff Pico
stayed behind in Goodyear with the Reds’
split squad playing the White Sox, while
manager Bryan Price went to Peoria with
the team facing the Mariners.
Moeller graduate Eric Surkamp pitched
two scoreless, hitless innings for the
White Sox.
Reds catchers Brayan Pena and Tucker
Barnhart also threw out would-be base
stealers, while Pena added a stolen base
of his own.

FLORALS
RETURN
By Melissa Rayworth
Associated Press
After years of simple solids and
geometric prints, the flower is making a comeback in decor. Floral patterns have been blooming all over
fashion runways in recent months,
and they are slowly finding their way
back into the world of home decorating, too.
It wasn’t long ago that any mention
of floral upholstery or wallpaper
brought back memories of 1980s cabbage roses, flowery Shabby Chic
borders stenciled high on bedroom
walls. But today’s new patterns can be
a refreshing antidote to the minimalist patterns that have dominated
home decorating in recent years.
“It’s what we’re all craving,” says
New York-based designer Jon Call,
founder of Mr. Call Designs.
Floral patterns can work well on
sleek, modern pieces of furniture,
says Betsy Burnham of Los Angeles’
Burnham Design. Rather than choosing a floral sofa that’s rounded and
tufted, use floral upholstery on a sofa
with straight, clean lines.
But be warned that a great pattern
can look dated if you pick the wrong
color palette, says Brian Patrick
Flynn, executive producer of
HGTV.com’s “Spring House” series
“Florals with mustard yellow and
burgundy palettes instantly feel old
and stuffy. To make them fresh and
fun, look for those with unexpected
color palettes, such as black and violet or springy greens and punchy
pinks. The pattern will keep its classic appeal, but with a youthful update.”
WHAT SIZE?
“Scale is the most important factor in
modernizing the look and feel of florals,” says Flynn. He suggests avoiding
flowers that are depicted at their actual
size. Instead, pick patterns where the
flowers are bigger — between 50 percent and 200 percent larger than life-size.
Call agrees: He’s a fan of using vintage
prints in “the largest scale you can find,”
so that the print’s eye-popping size contrasts with its traditional style.
But Call and Burnham also think floral
prints can look modern if they’re printed
on a very small scale, especially if they’re
used on smaller items like throw pillows.
WHICH PATTERN?
Find a floral print that really appeals to
you personally, Burnham suggests.
“Nothing corny, nothing ordinary,” she
says. You want “something really special.” You might try “chinoiseries that
include figures and florals,” Burnham
says, “or flora and fauna... That’s a way
to do it if you’re kind of scared of just
flowers.”
Another option is choosing a pattern
Traditional floral wallpaper contrasted
with unexpected accessories. AP
that’s more “botanical” than flowerfilled. “Homeowners with aversions to
super-girly florals featuring rosebuds or
elaborate petals may find botanicals a
better fit,” says Flynn. ■
