Zeeland, a province that
means business
6

Zeeland literally means “sea land”, not surprisingly as half of the province consists of land
and the other half of water. The contours of Zeeland and its horizon have been formed
over the centuries by the interplay of sea, water, wind and currents. Zeeland is positioned
strategically between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, on the Westerschelde estuary.
This province is perfect for doing business, working and living! Zeeland has excellent
transport connections, clean beaches kilometres long, two seaports, some major players in
the process industry, a strong SME sector, a well-developed logistical network and tourist
industry, and plenty of affordable space for new developments.

N.V. Economische
Impuls Zeeland
N.V. Economische Impuls Zeeland (Impuls) is an organisation committed to developing
a balanced economic structure in Zeeland and a solid competitive position in the long
term. Impuls does this by focusing on the sectors that are current strengths while at
the same time investing in the development of sectors with potential for the future.
The organisation also works on creating jobs for Zeeland’s working population and
making them accessible. The emphasis is on jobs that will continue to offer a challenge
and prospects in the longer term.
Impuls seeks to attract new businesses through PR and by targeted canvassing.
An essential part of this is providing useful information to interested companies.
Impuls is the right organisation for new businesses to contact, whether they want
information about the labour market in Zeeland, business parks, tax breaks or the
quality of life - which is guaranteed in Zeeland anyway!

Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland passed the stage of being a well-kept secret long ago.
A large number of companies and employees from the province Noord-Brabant and
the Randstad conurbation have discovered what the two municipalities have to offer:
very affordable housing, good facilities and attractive options for the establishment or
relocation of businesses looking for space. What is more, this region stands out through
its splendour, the inspiring calm of its countryside and its remarkable nature, both on
land and in the water.

Fun and peace go hand in hand
Walcheren
Walcheren consists of the municipalities of Middelburg, Veere and Vlissingen.
Together, Middelburg and Vlissingen together form the largest urban area in
Zeeland while Veere is the province’s main municipality for tourism. Walcheren’s

Attractions
Deltapark Neeltje Jans is a real crowdpuller with a unique recreational function.
This former working island lies in the middle of the Oosterschelde estuary and is
part of one of the most impressive technological feats of the previous century anywhere in the field of hydraulic engineering:
the storm surge barrier. Another attraction
is ZEP Middelburg, which includes Mini
Mundi and the Football Experience. Other
attractions worth a visit are the Arsenaal
with its pirate park and sea aquarium, and
the Iguana reptile house in Vlissingen.
Events
The Walcheren municipalities have a full
calendar of events so there is plenty to
choose from. Culture buffs can enjoy music,
dance and theatre during the Zeeland
Nazomer Festival, for example. Other wellknown events are Film by the Sea, the mussel-season festivities, and the various fairground events and traditional ‘ring riding’

Together, the municipalities of Borsele, Goes, Kapelle, Noord-Beveland and Reimerswaal
form De Bevelanden. This is a good region for doing business, working, living and
recreation. The huge diversity in economic activities, available housing, culture, nature
and countryside means the Bevelanden municipalities complement each other well,
creating an extremely attractive environment in which to live and work. The region
offers businesses and employees a wide range of opportunities with plenty of room for
new developments.

Business parks
The growing demand for commercial land will be met by the region’s six large
business parks over the next few years: Sloepoort in Borsele, De Poel (with a
display zone) in Goes, Smokkelhoek in Kapelle and Nishoek, and De Poort and
Olzendepolder in the municipality of Reimerswaal. There are still lots of room for
both large and small business in various sectors.

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which borders Belgium, the North Sea and the Westerschelde
estuary, stands for space, peace and freedom. There is about 6,800m2 per person here,
three times as much as the average for the Netherlands. This space - in combination
with a large number of amenities, a safe environment, a strategic position, no traffic
jams on the roads and good value for money in both the residential property market and
business parks - means plenty of opportunities for new businesses and inhabitants.
They can choose between the urban environment of Terneuzen municipality, the Flemish
atmosphere of Hulst or the rural municipality of Sluis. The friendly locals in ZeeuwsVlaanderen make everyone feel welcome.

Business parks
Zeeuws-Vlaanderen has a number of well-equipped business parks, each with its own character,
from large-scale business parks in the Kanaal zone close to Terneuzen to regional business parks
in the municipalities of Sluis and Hulst. There are plans for expanding many of these parks in the
next few years so there will be plenty of room for new businesses.

Zeeland Seaports:
linking Europe to the rest of the world
At the end of the 1960s, a number of large multinationals discovered the port area of
Zeeland Seaports as a unique location for setting up new production operations.
These companies included Dow Chemicals, Thermphos, Pechiney, Total, Zuid-Chemie
and Broomchemie. All these companies still exist, even if they are now sometimes
known by another name, and they are still profiting from the benefits of this area.
After all, this port area is positioned strategically between the key ports of Rotterdam
and Antwerp, on the mouth of the Westerschelde estuary. The deep fairways and the
lack of locks at Zeeland Seaports make for excellent nautical access while there are also
good connections with the European hinterland thanks to a sound network of roads and
railways, inland waterways and piping.

The plan is for the WCT to have a dockside two kilometres in length, which will
be able to accommodate five large container ships at the same time, and a capacity
of two million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent
units).
Other companies have container operations in Vlissingen-Oost. The storage and
transhipment company Kloosterboer has
now opened its own container terminal,
focused on handling refrigerated containers, and the firm Verbrugge has plans
for the construction of the Verbrugge
