Introducing Our New Teachers!
By Brooke and Trevin
Mrs.Baker: (
New Social Worker)
Before Mrs. Baker
came to Village
Elementary she was
a counselor for a
mental health agency. She grew up in Farmington, but in
Middle school she moved to Augusta.
Ms. Precopio:
(New Music Teacher)
lived in Philipsburg
where she worked
catching lobsters
for a living until she
went to college. She
also has a rescued cat
named Huston.
Technology Tip
Village School has Google Docs!
The Gorham Schools became a GAfE school
district in May of 2014. Google Apps for Education is a free suite of Google tools, including
Gmail and Google Drive and a lot more.
In Gorham all students are given Google
accounts which they will use through 12th grade.
Students don’t have gmail until they are in 6th
grade, but with Google Drive, they can create
documents, collaborate with others, and share
them with their teachers.
Ms.O’neil: (New
First Grade Teacher)
moved to Gorham
from Bangor. She
didn’t teach there
but went to school
there. She moved
here to be with her family. Before she
started teaching, she worked for a clothing store in the mall. Her brother is in
the Air force.
Mr. Downing:
(New 4th Grade
Teacher)grew up in
Gorham then, moved
away. He taught 2nd
grade at Rockwell
Elementary school.
He has been teaching
for 1.5 yrs.
We are very happy to have all four
new teachers at Village Elementary
School.

Today’s subject: Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vinci made so many
things that are in the modern world, such
as a wing up car! His full name is
Leonardo Di Ser Piero Da Vinci.
Close to the end of his life the King of
France, Francois I invited the old inventor to come and live with him in the town
of Amboise.
It is said that on his trip to Amboise
he carried the Mona Lisa with him in his
saddle bag.
Leonardo died in Amboise and was
put in a tomb on top of the castle where
the king lived.

The mystery is that there are two people in the tomb and scientists aren’t sure
which is actually Leonardo Da Vinci!
In the Art Room
by Rylee Tenuta
The art units that kids are working on
in the art room are drawing, painting,
printing, collage, mixed media, and 3D.
Kindergarten and first grade projects are
more simple, but each art project that
Mrs. Balcom assigns, builds onto the
next, and the next, so they will be ready
for more complicated projects that come
in the following years.

An Exercise
ShakeUp
By: Brooke
Dance can enhance your life in some
very healthy ways. Get your body moving with some fun exercise, watch your
confidence soar, and meet new friends.
Those are all really great things to gain
from dance. A lot of dance studios offer
classes for all ages and abilities. After
school kids clubs and even Mr. Speed’s
Dance Revolution class in P.E. are great
ways to have a healthy and fun exercise. I interviewed one of our students
from Village Elementary and she says
“Dance is healthy for me because I don’t
really do other sports so it is a way for
me to stay active. For dance classes I
do tap, musical theater, and Irish step
dance”-Madeline D. All you need is
MUSIC TO DANCE!

From the Office of the Principal
Dear Village School Families,
I hope this finds you well and enjoying
the fall foliage. Our school year is well under
way. As we walk through the halls at Village
School, we see students helping students.
There are so many wonderful things that
can be observed on every given day. We
continue to hear students talking about how
important it is to follow the Village School
Code of Conduct and support one another,
which warms all of our hearts.
In efforts to promote wellness and
fitness for our children, we want the children
to be able to play outdoors as long as it is not
too cold. We have a process to determine
this each day based upon guidelines from
the Department of Public Health. We use a
“feels like” temperature, which includes the
wind factor and also considers the length of
time children will be out. In any event, please
be sure your child comes to school properly
dressed for the weather.
We are hosting our first family night
of the year on October 25th. The “Glow
Run” will be a fun event to get us moving as
families and to help raise money to support
our classroom libraries.
Lastly, please look for information on
our food drive coming soon. To kick off the
drive, the students will take part in a whole
school assembly to learn about the Food
Pantry and receive a list of needed items.
We want this drive to help local families
and to serve as a life lesson on how to be
community contributors.

Girls On The Run (GOTR) is an all
girl running program. At the end of each
season, we have a big GOTR 5K! And,
guess what? We have our own GOTR
team at village! We interviewed some
people (girls), and here is what they said:
A fifth grader who has been doing it for
3 seasons said that originally a friend
suggested it and she wasn’t so sure but,
she LOVED it!
A third grader in their first season
said that on her first day she was really
excited! She said all the coaches and girls
are super nice. Her mom originally found
out about it and she immediately told
her. She will definitely be back next year!
We also interviewed some cross
country girls from the high school. They
said that they decided to do cross country
because they like to get in shape, and a
lot of people suggested it. Some of them
have been doing it for 2-5 years! They
say that it is fun, and everyone should do
it! They would definitely recommend it
to friends! Also, they will be doing it next
year!
Fondly,
Brian Porter and Jodi Mezzanotte
