Tee it
Forward
Golf is a tough game – from 7,000 yards. It gets a
bit easier at 5,900 yards, and somewhat tolerable
at 4,500 yards. Those words are mine – a 59 year
old duffer playing to a 9 handicap. My main problem is that the ball seems to land closer to the tee
every year.
I closely monitor our first tee when it is busy
just to ensure everyone is enjoying the wait, and to
encourage people to read our “Tee it Forward”
signs we have on each tee deck. They basically ask
how far your drive actually goes – and then
encourage you to move forward to the next tee
deck as you realize your drive is shorter than you
think. This happens successively for all 3-tee
decks, until the player realizes they should be out
at our Green Tees that are basically at the 200yard mark on every hole. It has taken a season for
this to sink in to the golfers’ psyche - but the overall reaction has been positive. Our senior men play
on Thursday mornings, and most of them play
from the middle or forward tees now – a significant
change from “playing from the tips” as seems to
be the cry when groups arrive. Even on men’s
night, there are more playing from the middle tees.
(I forgot to mention that we are a 6100-yard
course!). I had 4 ladies from another club visit – 1
hit from the forward tees, 3 marched down the fairway to the shortest length – and they all had a
great time.
I think our real challenge is to get people to
realize that it is not the drive that we are trying to
address. It is the dreaded second shot. In my case,
I prefer to hit a wedge through 8 iron into the
green for this accuracy – they never seem to fade
or hook as much! So if we can do the math for the
golfer, and get their drive to the 150 yard marker
with the philosophy of teeing it forward, they will
52
soon realize that their scores should improve by
about 1 stroke on the par 4 and par 5 holes. We will
leave the rest of the challenge up to them.
It seems to me that if we can shorten long
courses so people can truly enjoy them, then we
should be looking at our own courses, no matter
what length, to see how we can adjust them so our
guests can have a better time. It cost me about
$200 for all of the signage to start this initiative.
The comments back have been priceless. I think
there is merit to this effort – let’s all try it in our
own fashion and see how it goes. See you on the
right tee for your drive – tee it forward!!

GOLF BUSINESS CANADA
Make more money through benchmarking! When you know how your facility is
performing you can make better decisions that will bring in more revenue or
save on expenses. Learn to assess your
golf course based on revenue per round
of golf and not just on number of
rounds played.
We’ve made it even easier to input
your numbers each month. A quick log in
and then it takes 2 minutes to enter your
benchmarking numbers. Remember to
update your profile page to ensure you
are comparing yourself to the correct
segment within the golf industry.
The reports are now easy to understand and use. In addition if you complete your data entry each month the
report will come to you in your inbox. If
the 5th of the month comes before
you’ve entered your data you will receive
a reminder in your inbox.
Achieving critical mass will increase
the value of the reports you receive.
Encourage your colleagues in the industry to participate. It is completely confidential so your information is only ever
included in aggregated reporting.
Golf Industry Barometer will allow you
to track all of the following:
Days closed, green fee rounds, member
rounds, tournament rounds, complimentary rounds as well if you enter revenue
information for green fees, cart rentals,
practice facility, retail, food and alcohol
your report will give you your revenue
per round. This in comparison to others
is a great indicator of how successfully
you are performing. See sample rounds
played report to the right.

I have received this magazine for several years,
and am always impressed by the content. The most
recent edition, Fall 2011, is fantastic; with well-written articles, especially “United in Victory” and
“Golf Courses Triumph”. It is very satisfying to see
that all the advocacy efforts are paying off. We all
know that the subject matter addressed in those
two articles is important for all golf courses,
whether they are in Quebec, or other provinces.

unity with Mother Nature. Canadians want to
belong, participate, contribute and perform at
world-class standards. With our governing leaders
supporting ‘the business of the game,’ the
Canadian game will continue to grow with golfers
who will populate our courses and the world golf
stage. Brilliant advocacy win!
In an industry shaped so much by political legislature the article “Get In The Know; How to Talk to
Your Politicians” by Huw Williams in the Fall 2011
issue is a fantastic lesson on how to approach the
decision makers in all levels of government. With
current regulations golf course operators face with
taxation, environmental stewardship, health and
safety, etc., it is very important to keep open communications with politicians.

I am encouraged by the significant advocacy wins
our association has achieved recently but there is
a long list of legislative issues that still lie ahead.
The lobby days conducted earlier this summer
were a great first step. A continued and determined effort to inform and educate our politicians
will be critical to the health of our industry. If we
really want to influence government, let’s not be
strangers to our politicians.

It’s great to finally have one organization representing the interests of the Canadian golf industry.
It seems that elected officials must be reminded
that golf is a business, and consequently their
decisions impact the viability of golf facilities.
Thank you NAGA and thank you NGCOA Canada
for all of your hard work on behalf of all of us.
Thanks for giving golf a voice.
