Coat of Arms
Dear Parishioners and Benefactors: Some of you have noticed
a bronze plaque that Carmine
DiFlumeri from the DiFlumeri
Tile & Marble, Inc., has donated
and installed this past week on the landing leading to
the church entrance from the Peace Garden. It
represents the Coat of Arms of the Franciscan Order,
depicting two arms that cross each other. One is the
arm of the crucified Lord and the other is the arm of
Francis, who carried the stigmata or the signs of
Christ’s crucifixion miraculously engraved in his
body from September 17, 1224, until his death that
took place in Assisi on October 3, 1226. Among
human beings, besides the blessed Mother, no one
resembled the crucified Lord as much as Francis did.
His was not a physical resemblance but rather a
spiritual connectedness that affected body and soul
of the poverello. He loved Jesus so much that his
mind, heart, and soul, as a matter of fact his whole
being, mirrored Jesus, the love of his life. Under these
two arms shaped like a cross you read the beautiful
words that Francis used to pray continuously. The
Latin words, Deus Meus et Omnia, mean “my God
and my all.” Francis from the moment of his conversion when he fell in deep love with Jesus came to
realize evermore clearly that the only possession he
needed was God. In his spiritual journey, it was
revealed to him that possessing God is the true
wealth he wanted for himself. Without God, all
the wealth of this world is rubbish. In the light of
the holy Gospel, he came to appreciate that God
is enough to make him fulfilled and without God
nothing could fill the deepest longing of his soul.
That is why Francis used to repeat in prayer that
God was everything that he really needed.
Francis loved creation and none of us has enjoyed
the creatures as much as he did. He saw in every
element of the creation the imprint of God as they
mirror the beauty, the goodness, and the splendor of
the Creator. Free from the demon of greed, he could
admire, respect, and rejoice in every creature. What a
modern saint for all of us to imitate! He teaches us by
his very experience that when we find God our eyes
open, and we see the world that surrounds us as a
precious gift that “is ours to use and not to abuse.” I
wish to conclude this short reflection quoting the last
verse of the hymn “Stewards of Earth” that fully
reflects the spirituality of Francis, the patron saint
of the environment.
“To tend the earth is our entrusted duty,
For earth is ours to use and not abuse.
O gracious Lord, true source of all resources,
Forgive our greed that wields destruction’s sword.
Then let us serve as wise and faithful stewards,
While earth gives glory to creation’s Lord.”
[words by Omer Westerdorf (1916-1997)
music by Jean Sibelius “Finlandia” (1865-1957)]

Last week’s second collection supports
Catholic World Missions. By Baptism, all
Catholics are called to participate in the mission
of the Church and share their faith as missionaries. World Mission Sunday gathers support
for the pastoral and evangelizing programs and
needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in
Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and remote
regions of Latin America. The funds gathered
on World Mission Sunday are distributed in the
Pope’s name by the Society for the Propagation
of the Faith – a Pontifical Mission Society.
We are grateful for your financial contribution
to the ministry of our Parish. We appeal to the
whole community of the North End and to our
visitors to support our efforts in restoring Saint
Leonard Church. We appreciate your continued
support!
