IT BEGINS WITH US...
How would you feel if you could not afford to buy food to feed your children? What would you do?
To whom would you turn?
Difficult questions like these are faced by many families in our community. These parents are often
hard-working adults who have lost jobs or have been forced to take pay reductions. With the high
cost of living in Orange County they simply cannot make ends meet. Their dollars rarely make it to
their dinner tables. In fact, the latest statistics on those at risk of hunger were recently released, and
while improved, it’s heartbreaking to realize that 20.6% or 1 in 5 children in Orange County still face
the threat of going to bed hungry every night.
Harvesters and Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County have worked side by side for 24 years
to raise the much needed funds for hunger relief programs to help families and individuals in need.
These fantastic programs must continue to grow to meet the demands in our community.
On behalf of the Harvesters, we are grateful to our generous donors who join us in the ongoing effort

As our county moves once again into a time of improving economic conditions and prosperity,
we are mindful that this abundance isn’t yet a reality for all who live and work in our community.
There are more than 349,000 people in Orange County who at some point during the month
don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Unfortunately, we only have enough resources
to feed 200,000 people each month, leaving too many still in search of nourishment.
I know that this is hard to imagine both in the sheer number of people in need and in thinking
of what it must be like to look in the pantry and find nothing to feed your family for dinner. Not
long ago I spoke to a young mother named Jill who told me how, when her husband had been
laid off from his job in construction, she struggled to feed her two young boys. “I would wait until
it was dark so no one could see me and then I would dumpster dive behind the grocery store
for food. You know, there’s a lot of good food in there and I need fresh produce to keep my boys
healthy,” she said.
Fortunately, Jill found out about our Mobile Pantry delivery of fresh produce and other staple
items. She was able to get enough nutritious food to feed her family and tide them over until her
husband could find a new job.

Second Harvest Food Bank feeds more than
200,000 people a month through a network of
hundreds of community partners throughout
the county, distributing the equivalent of nearly
20 million meals in 2015.
In 2014, our research for the latest Hunger in
America Study conducted with Feeding America
revealed some startling findings:
•
More people in Orange County are finding
it harder to make ends meet. The 2014
Hunger Study showed that 71% of client
households have incomes below the
poverty level, but our 2006 Hunger Study
showed that 56% of client households
had incomes below the poverty level – a
significant increase.
•
80% of our client households are food
insecure and often have to choose
between food and basic necessities like
rent, medicine and transportation.
•
79% of clients report purchasing inexpensive,
unhealthy food as a way to get enough to
eat but this has consequences for health –
a poor diet can lead to heart disease and
diabetes.
•
More than 59% report watering down food
or drinks to stretch them.
Last year we made 597 Mobile Pantry stops to feed families just like Jill’s in underserved
neighborhoods in our county. This is just one of the ways that we help keep people fed and
healthy so they can concentrate on finding ways to sustain themselves and their families.
The Harvesters have been Second Harvest’s supporters and champions in the community for 24
years. From Mobile and School Pantries, to Kids Cafe afterschool and summer feeding programs,
to Brown Bags for seniors and more, we are partnering with you to create a hunger-free world.

CHANGING & NOURISHING LIVES TOGETHER
REAL LIVES INSPIRE REAL SOLUTIONS
In 2013 Second Harvest Food Bank launched a campaign titled “30 Faces of Hunger
and Hope” to put a face on hunger. The campaign produced a series of black and
white images that featured some of the people whose lives have been improved
by the programs offered through second Harvest. From seniors receiving food so
they can afford their medications, to the mom who has lost her job and needs help
putting food on the table. Consider the children who will do better in school with full
tummies. Here’s a look at the programs that help those represented in the campaign,
and the countless others who continue to need our help and continue to inspire us.
School Pantry
2015 was an exciting year for Second Harvest’s School Pantry Program. Second
Harvest partnered with 18 schools in underserved areas in a new effort to end child
hunger by distributing fresh, nutritious food to children and families at their local
schools in a farmer’s market-style setting. In the 2015 calendar year, we served more
than 19,000 families, including over 50,000 childeren, the equivalent of 682,000 meals.
The School Pantries also provide nutrition education and referrals to other programs
and agencies that can help families on their path to self-sufficiency. With a growing
waiting list, we know there is a tremendous need, but the program is off to great start.
In other news, we have obtained funding for a pilot program for permanent School
Pantries. The first permanent School Pantry at Lincoln Elementary School in Anaheim
is open before school, after school, and one Saturday a month to serve families when
they need help. The pantry will also have more perishable items like meat and dairy
products to further improve nutrition and help kids succeed in school.
Izzy’s Corner
Izzy’s Corner celebrated its third year of providing an opportunity for children ages
7 to 13 to have a unique hands-on volunteering experience. This exciting space
and program were inspired by the book Izzy and the Candy Palace written by Isabel
Janavs, daughter of Harvester Michelle Janavs.
Last year more than 1,400 children and their parents and troop leaders volunteered for
more than 2,600 hours packing thousands of pounds of produce for distribution to children and families through our Kids Cafes, School Pantry, and Mobile Pantry programs.
Izzy’s Corner remains one of the most sought-after volunteer experiences at Second
Harvest.
This year Izzy’s Corner became the collection point for our Peanut Butter and Jelly
Buddies program. Donations of all natural peanut butter and jelly help teachers in
some of the counties poorest schools feed students who come to school hungry.
Kids Cafes
Second Harvest’s 53 Kids Cafes provide a welcoming, safe place for children in
underserved neighborhoods to come to after school and in the summer when they
don’t have access to the meals they usually receive through the Free and Reduced
Price Lunch Program. Here children can get help with homework and tutoring while
receiving nutrition education and healthy snacks or meals to ensure that they have
the food they need to do well in school – and in life.
Our thanks and gratitude go to Lilly and Paul Merage for their commitment to the
Kids Cafe program. Their generous donations continue to provide nutritious food to
thousands of children from needy families so they can learn and thrive.
Plates of Love
Plates of Love is a junior membership program of Second Harvest Food Bank.
Membership is open to children ages 7 and up who are committed to helping the
needy. Activities include planting and harvesting fresh produce at Incredible Edible
Farm and hosting food drives through school, church, or service clubs. Members can
“adopt” a Mobile Food Pantry that delivers 5,000 pounds of fresh produce and other
food items directly into underserved areas of Orange County. Special group projects
will also be available from time to time.
Incredible Edible Farm at the Great Park
The Incredible Edible Farm is a wonderful example of a unique public/private partnership
between Second Harvest, the City of Irvine, the OC Great Park and Orange County
Produce designed to help end hunger by growing fresh produce for those in need. In its
second year at the OC Great Park, more than 4,500 volunteers, including Harvesters and
their children, have planted and harvested 251,013 pounds of nutritious produce at
the Farm.
Harvesters Special Fund
Last year the Harvesters Special Fund, headed by Teddie Ray, purchased a refrigerated “reefer” unit for Second Harvest’s trucks to safely transport food to and from the
distribution center located in Irvine. The donation of this essential piece of equipment greatly helps in distributing the increasing amount of food needed to feed the
hungry in Orange County. Special thanks to the Ueberroth Family Foundation, Keiko
Sakamoto, Ellen Gordon, Sheila Peterson, Judith Posinkoff, Julie McAlpine, Michele
O’Leary-Koll and, of course, Teddie Ray for their generous donation.
Community Outreach
The Harvesters have been committed to spreading awareness and serving those at
risk of hunger for more than 24 years. Their participation in volunteer programs reaches
beyond Second Harvest’s walls and into the community. Volunteer activities include
hosting food drives at schools, planting and harvesting produce at the Incredible Edible
Farm in the OC Great Park, distributing food at Mobile Pantries, and raising funds for
hunger relief programs at their annual Luncheon and Fashion Show.
The Harvesters’ support reaches the needy throughout Orange County through
Second Harvest’s work with a network of hundreds of community partners throughout
the county, including church and school pantries, homeless shelters, senior centers,
soup kitchens, and homes for abused women and children. Those served include
the working poor, children, seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, veterans, the
disabled, the homeless, and individuals experiencing medical emergencies or recent
job layoffs.
Second Harvest invites volunteers to become active in advocating on behalf of the
food bank and the hungry in Orange County. To learn more about those who need
our help and the impact that the Harvesters and Second Harvest are making in our
communities come to one of the twice-monthly Harvesting Hope Tours at the food
bank’s distribution center in Irvine.
The knowledge that our generosity can truly make a difference inspires Harvesters
and our generous partners to continue supporting these amazing programs. Programs
that seek to end hunger here in Orange County. Programs that we hope will create a
future in which no one goes hungry. Ever.
