1st EDITION / FALL-WINTER 2015
ROVINJ CONQUERED BY
DANCERS IN 2015… AGAIN
CROATIAN SUMMER SALSA FESTIVAL AND SUMMER SENSUAL DAYS KICKING IT OFF…FOR MANY YEARS IN A ROW
There is this great vibe spreading over the city right before the Summer Sensual
Days. Everybody’s talking about a pack of crazy dancers coming to rule the city
for two full weeks. And the best thing about it is that nobody has a problem
with it! :) Throughout the years, these two festivals have spread throughout
the whole town of Rovinj (and beyond) making all kinds of unusual places to
dancefloors for a couple of thousands of dancers coming from all over the
world. This year we’ve pushed the limits once again, thus making your memory
of Rovinj last even longer… #seasunsalsa #seasunsexy #bepartofit

Put on my socks
yesterday for the first
time since April – yup,
summer is officially
over. It’s this temperature shock that
hits you always with
the first rain storms
announcing Lady Autumn taking over the
stage. And yes, I feel
you, it’s totally depressing. But WHAT
IF we could make
summer last longer?
I hate to break it to
you, but no, I can’t
change the weather.
Still, I can maybe
make you relive
your summer dance
holidays to the fullest!
Welcome to the 1st
edition of Sea Sun
Salsa Buzz, bringing
you highlights of your
favourite summer
salsa festival! Hope
it will make your
gloomy autumn days
warmer! P.S. Please
don’t use it to set fire

YEAH, YEAH YOU KNOW THE DRILL…
EVERY YEAR SOME NEW THINGS :)
Just when you thought that it can’t get longer – well think again! Yup, we’ve added some more... 2 extra
prefestival days on SSD! And to satisfy your party appetites (which seems to be impossible, but hey we
can give it a try) we’ve added an extra party place during CSSF. A vineyard! Judging by the reactions, we
might want to consider looking for an even bigger vineyard next year… Zouk fans got some more space
this year with their own floor during SSD, and kizomba addicts got 2 floors separated by style. Show
programs during CSSF took place in a separated Show Hall, so you could dance throughout the whole
night without obstacles and cool off in a new lounge area. We’ve decided to offer group and single airport shuttles, included some special discounts for parents coming with kids, and all shopping kings and
queens got a separated market place. And next year, we’ll… Well, you’ll just have to wait and see :)

I
n the time of Tsar
Diokletian many
Christians were
captured, persecuted
and killed. Among them
there was a 15-year-old
girl called Euphemia
from Chalcedon. She was
arrested by Diocletian’s
soldiers, and upon refusing
to give up Christianity, she
was tortured with cruelty
and thrown to the lions.
Christians from Chalcedon
preserved her body until
620 when the town was
captured by the Persians.
The sarcophagus with the
body of St. Euphemia was
then transferred to a church
in Constantinople. In 800
the Iconoclasts came to
power, and the Christians
were forced to remove the
relics of St. Euphemia. It is
hard to say what happened
next. The legend says that
her sarcophagus came floating in the sea to the coast of
Rovinj after a big storm at
dawn of July 13, 800. Many
people of Rovinj tried to
haul the sarcophagus to the
Church of Saint George,
but no one succeeded.
Finally, answering to St.
Euphemia’s call, a small boy
with two little cows managed to do it. The people of
Rovinj considered it a miracle, and they proclaimed St.
Euphemia the patron-saint
of the town. St. Euphemia’s Day is celebrated on
September 16.

STILL CAN’T GET
ENOUGH OF THEM!
Looks like we could organize
a real dancing fleet with all
the boats setting off during
SSD and CSSF! And there are
still people looking for more!
This year we had 5 boats all
together with 2 of them going
on Monday after SSD and 3 on
the last Monday of CSSF. Rumour has it that everybody had
the time of their life! :) That’s
why we’re planning something
really special for next year…
Stay tuned!

SECRET VINEYARD PARTY – FOR THE
FIRST TIME EVER AND DEFINITELY
NOT THE LAST
Yes, you heard it right… we actually made a
salsa party in a vineyard! Next to the crazy
location, we added some wine tasting,
delicious traditional Istrian food, blankies
to chill out on and some amazing music by
our festival DJs. And it turned out you liked
the idea! :) Looking forward to the next
year’s edition already… #wineanddine

Tired of classical workshop-hopping

of something for you too! Our first
Backstage talks, mini conference on
dance event management included talks by Franco Sparfeld (Berlin
Salsa Congress) and Michael Hauser
(Vienna Salsa Congress) and a Q/A
session followed by a casual dinner
and chit-chat. 2nd edition – under
construction! :) #backstagetalks

Olu Olu’s Coffee Lounge has finally
got its offline version! And it was
accepted widely as we could see
on this year’s CSSF. Olu’s guests this
year in Rovinj were Luis Vazquez,
Osbanis Tejeda, Ricardo Sousa and
Mark Anthony Sheppard discussing
live music, kizomba at salsa events
and Cuban salsa dancing. Interesting comments, tonnes of laughter,
positive attendees and guests – what
more could you wish for? We’re definitely upgrading next year’s Friday
like this as well ;) #oluolu

Istrian
Cuisine
The preparation of food has
always been characterized by
exceptional imagination
T
he wealth of this cuisine is not
at all negligible. Istria’s turbulent
past has certainly left a trace on
its cuisine. Various traditions
are interwoven in the local cuisine, which
is based on nature (aromatic spices, wild
growing plants, vegetables, seafood...), but
there is also the influence of Franconian
and German feudal rule, Roman dishes and
Slavic cuisine. The main features of Istrian
food would be: predominance of boiled
over roast food, a lot of spices and wild
growing plants, plenty of fish, wine vinegar
and olive oil, whereas wine is an important
ingredient in cooking.

Live, love, laugh
and dance under
the stars
There aren’t that many things in life that can provoke such joy in a
dancer’s life such as dancing under a clear night sky surrounded by a
couple of thousands of dancers from all around the world
R
ovinj is a really
small town. Not
so many inhabitants. It has its old
town with a church, shops,
restaurants, bars, hotels, art
galleries… Nothing special,
as one could easily say. But
for some reason it has this
special flair which makes you
feel cosy all the time. As if
you’ve just returned home
from a distant place. As if
you’ve known everybody
there for your whole life.
As if you’ve had your very
special spot in this town since
forever. As such, it also has
hundreds of small streets,
squares and courtyards
which turn into a special
kind of dancefloors once the
SSD and CSSF crowd visits
this Mediterranean piece of
heaven every year.
dance points If there
would be a machine
measuring positive energy
coming from the streets
of Rovinj during SSD
and CSSF, this machine
would probably scream
“attention – overload” all
the time! Every year we’re
trying to spread even
more around the town
with different festival activities, so this year’s SSD
and CSSF had all together
5 official evening open air
parties (and thousands of
other unofficial ones of
course). Warm summer
evenings, great music,
world famous instructors
and your old and new
friends waiting to make
your open air dancing
really memorable… Every
dancer’s dream come true.
grande fiesta And that’s
when it all explodes! The
crown of street dancing
which has been warming
up the streets of Rovinj
for more than a week
before – Grande Fiesta at
the main square in Rovinj.
This year’s Friday Fiesta
brought a set of amazing
show performances and
an incredible concert by
Grupo Extra, who have
shaken up old stones
of Rovinj’s town centre
with their perky bachata,
merengue, salsa and
reggaeton beats, echoing
through the town for a
couple of days after as well.
and when it ends …
and when the last dancer
leaves with their heart
full of new memories
and experiences, this
little town finally gets
back to its usual dreamy
state, seeing off a bunch
of funny little creatures
who have been coming
with music for 11 years in
a row. Shaking this small
town, its (not so many)
inhabitants, its shops,
restaurants, bars, hotels
and art galleries. Making it
even more special than it
is. #lovelyrovinj

W
hat else can you expect when you put a couple of thousands of dancers in a huge pool
area?! Definitely not a picnic :) Year after
year, the tickets for both SSD and CSSF
pool parties have always been the most wanted ones. This is
one time at both festival where all participants, artists, DJs
and festival staff come together – to party hard during the
entire day. Whether it’s the sensual crowd moving slowly to
the sounds of bachata and kizomba or salsa party animals
kicking it off with their salsa moves, everybody’s always
here with one common goal – to finish off one or the other
festival with a bang! 2015 was no exception as well – animations, great music, many, many dancers smiling… Let’s not
spoil anything for next year as well :)

A fairy-tale-town in the
midst of Istrian peninsula
DISTANCE FROM ROVINJ – 55 KM
Motovun is a captivating little town perched on a 277m
hill in the Mirna River Valley, about 25km northeast
of Poreč. It was the Venetians who decided to fortify
the town in the 14th century, building two sets of
thick walls. There are a number of galleries and shops
before you enter the old town and between the town
gates, including a wine-tasting shop and a Zigante
food store. Within the walls, an atmospheric cluster of
Romanesque and Gothic buildings houses a smattering of artist studios. Newer houses have sprung up on
the slopes leading to the old town, where the popular
film festival takes place every summer – the very film
fest that has, in recent years, made Motovun the most
touristy of Istria’s hilltop towns.
