The entire Enberg family at home in Minnesota
The Enberg Family’s Journey
When Tammy and Eric Enberg traveled from
Minnesota to Ukraine in 2009 to adopt their
five-year-old daughter Sophie, they did not
imagine that they were starting a journey
that would double the size of their family.
The Enbergs had found Sophie, who was
born with Arthrogryposis, through a specialneeds adoption service, and just knew she
was for them.
“I happened to cross her listing on the web one
day,” says Tammy. “I looked outside and saw
my daughter Maia running with her ponytail
flopping in the wind and I knew that I had to
go get this little blonde girl or she would never
have the chance to run like that.” Sophie’s
Arthrogryposis, which is a rare congenital
disorder that results in multiple joint
contractures, meant that she was unable
to walk.
After arriving in Ukraine, the Enbergs met Ben.
Two years older than Sophie, Ben was in her
group at the orphanage. “He had the same

condition and they were confined together,”
Tammy says. “They were like siblings and we
thought it would be cruel to separate them, so
we decided to bring them both home together.”
While at the orphanage, the Enbergs bonded
with several other special-needs children. “We
knew when we left that we needed to come
back and adopt them,” Tammy says, and in
August of 2010 they brought home four more
children in need of a family: Jaeger, Natasha,
Diana, and Andre.
The Enbergs always knew they wanted to
adopt. “We had a heart for orphans,” Tammy
says. After having their first two children –
Cody, now 16, and Chrysta, now 14 – they
decided to try for a third. “We tried and tried,”
says Tammy, before deciding they would try
to adopt. The family looked to Russia for their
first adoption. “We started to adopt Ethan,
and then I got pregnant with Maia. When Maia
was eight weeks old, we went to Russia to
bring Ethan home.”

Message From The President
This winter has been a challenge for all of us with the unending snow. We were so happy
that our Share A Night celebration, held on December 8, took place on a perfect starry
night. As in years past, Ronald McDonald, accompanied by the children staying at the
House, pushed the magical button to illuminate the House in lights, with each bulb
representing a gift by our generous donors. The House was not only aglow with
thousands of twinkling lights but was packed full of families, staff, board members,
friends, and volunteers. The food from Helen’s Kitchen was terrific and the entertainers
were delightful. This very special evening was the culmination of our annual Share A
Night campaign, which raised more than $400,000 for the families we serve.
We have many upcoming events that we hope you will join us for in 2011, including the
Friends’ 11th Annual Hit ‘em for the House Golf and Tennis Outing and four Phillies games
to benefit the House. Want to get involved? Sign up your foursome for a day of golf at the
Philadelphia Country Club, this year honoring Bernie and Sandy Nelson. Or, relax at an
evening out at the ballpark – all while supporting the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
As you can see, we have a variety of exciting upcoming events where you can have fun
while helping a good cause. Get more details by visiting our website at www.philarmh.org.
As always, thank you for your support.

The Enberg Family’s Journey
Continued from front
Today, the Enbergs have a total of ten
children, ranging from age five to sixteen.
While six of their children have special
needs, Sophie and Ben require the most
specialized care, which led them to
Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. “We
couldn’t find anyone in Minnesota. We
found Dr. Van Bosse at Shriners Hospital
and he gave us hope that Sophie could
walk one day,” Tammy says.
In September, Sophie and Ben came with
Tammy for the first of many visits to
Shriners Hospital. Both Sophie and Ben
are going through serial castings for their
club feet, and Sophie will require many
years of surgeries to gain the ability to
walk and usage of her hands. So far, the
Enbergs have stayed at the Philadelphia
Ronald McDonald House at Front & Erie
four times during their trips to Philadelphia.
Tammy comes with Sophie and Ben while
her husband Eric – a doctor with a rural
family practice – stays home with their
other children, and has found the House
to be a large source of support. “I would
be lost without the House, just the
financial aspect of coming here every few
weeks. If we had to pay a $100 per night,
we couldn’t do it,” says Tammy. She also
appreciates the support she gets from
other families at the House. “We’ve made
a lot of friends coming here – other
families with children with Arthrogryposis,”
Tammy says. “It is wonderful to have
other people who understand.”
Sophie and Ben enjoy their stays at the
Front & Erie House as well. “They love
the playroom and the food,” Tammy says.
“They love to scoot around and play. The
big theatre downstairs is a hit. Every time
we come they ask, ‘Can we watch a
movie?’” Sophie especially looks forward
to the visits from the two therapy dogs,
Stella and Brutus, who visit the House
with their owner Steven Kramer on a
regular basis. “I really miss them when
they’re not here,” Sophie says.
Overall, Tammy says the House is more
than just somewhere to sleep for them.
“It is great to have a place to stay and
a place to have dinner, but the emotional
support I would say has been the greatest
for me – just to hear a friendly voice
saying dinner is waiting for you, or to
listen if we have a hard day.”
Back in Minnesota, the Enbergs are
still adjusting to adding six new family
members in less than a year. “Life is
very busy and I had to learn to cook
for an army,” Tammy says with a laugh.
They’ve also invested in many sets of
bunk beds. Still, the possibility of growing
their family even more is not out of the
question. “I don’t know if we will adopt
more children,” Tammy says. “I would
never say never.”

Message from the Executive Director
A Place to Call Home: Keeping Families Together Throughout 2010
In the course of my day, I have the
opportunity to meet many new people,
either when I am out in the community
representing our organization, or when
visitors come to one of our Houses.
During conversation about the
Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House,
I am commonly asked, “How do you
work there? Isn’t it depressing and hard
to see sick kids?”
My answer and belief is yes. It is difficult
to see critically ill children struggling
and sometimes not winning their battle.
However, our homes are a safe and
happy place for patients, parents, and
siblings to stay. And, no, it is not hard
to work at the Philadelphia Ronald
McDonald House. Each day when I
enter one of our locations, walk through
the kitchen, and see the families we
serve, I know exactly why I work at the
Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
I know why I have come to work that
day, and what I need to do to support
our organization’s mission of providing
lodging and supportive services when
families need it most. When I look at how
many families we were able to serve in
2010, I am proud to be affiliated with this
organization. It is my hope that as donors
and volunteers of our organization, you
will also feel the same sense of pride in
knowing that your contribution last year
helped so many people.
each day on both the Oncology and
Cardiology units.
We are grateful for the more than 300
regularly scheduled volunteers who
together dedicated over 23,412 hours of
service to make the work we do possible.
Our volunteer van drivers provided 3,307
trips of reliable van transportation to
the hospital. Our Guest Chef program
volunteers, drawn from businesses,
organizations, neighborhoods, families
and other community groups, lovingly
prepared 880 home-cooked meals for
our families at our Houses each and
every day, as well as 226 meals for
families at the Family Rooms. And,
through their financial generosity, our
donors ensured that no family is ever
turned away for their inability to pay our
nominal nightly fee of $15. On behalf of
all of us at the Philadelphia Ronald
McDonald House, thank you for helping
us provide a place to call home.
Because of your compassion, financial
contributions, and time, you helped us
support 2,718 total family stays at our
two Houses located at Chestnut Street
and Front & Erie. Traveling from not only
the greater Philadelphia area but from
39 states and 16 countries, families
stayed from 1 night to 254 consecutive
nights – a total of more than 8 months
away from home. Our annual occupancy
rate was 90% and, at times, we received
more room requests than we could
accommodate, and had to turn away
requests 1,503 times. In those instances,
our operations staff worked with each
family to find accommodations through
other non-profit resources and our hotel
partners who offer discounted rates.
In addition, our two Ronald McDonald
Family Rooms at The Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia provided respite space for
up to 48 families with in-patient children

A Board Member’s Perspective
Some might call me the accidental board member. Fully committed to my work and my career,
the rising priority of social responsibility on the corporate agenda called for non-profit board work.
I was elected to the board knowing only the House’s fine reputation. Impressed by the mission
and those committed to it and armed with a desire to give back, it seemed like a good fit, but
honestly, the passion and commitment to the mission that I feel today came later. I was very
busy at the time, and in the early days my efforts focused on traditional board responsibilities
and governance, but I quickly realized making myself available as a full participant called for
more than meetings and votes. For me, giving the gift of home soon included volunteering as
a guest chef, adopting a family at Christmas, sending a child to camp, and raising and donating
money to ensure that we are there for the next family in need. The inspirational stories of the
families I’ve had the opportunity to meet are a powerful motivator to stay involved.
Chris Roak
Proud Board Member
The investment in time has turned out to be minuscule compared to what I get from it. Rather than
taking my time and energy, this sort of work gives me energy and provides me with balance in my
life. My experience has reminded me of the importance of keeping one’s purpose front and center
as one decides how to spend time, talent, and energy. For me, nothing is more important than
family and its blessings, and I am honored to be one of the many volunteers who work so hard to
complement an outstanding staff in providing an ever increasing array of services for our families.
Dining With The Stars Offers Meals of a Lifetime
In October, we were thrilled to host our first ever Dining With The Stars online auction. Our supporters were able to bid on
a once-in-a-lifetime meal, provided by some of the area’s most celebrated restaurants and caterers, with the celebrity of
their choice. We are grateful to the more than 30 stars and restaurants who participated in the auction, as well as the lucky
winning bidders who enabled us to raise more than $50,000 for the families we serve. Thank you to our media partners
CBS3 Philadelphia and The CW Philly, along with Philadelphia magazine, for their support.

Celebrating The Season of
Share A Night
During the holidays, we rely on the generosity of our friends in
the community to make the season a little brighter for the families
we serve. We are so grateful for the ways that our dedicated
donors and volunteers support us, whether contributing to our
annual Share A Night campaign, providing toys and gifts through
our Adopt a Family and Holiday Wish List collections, raising
much-needed funds through a holiday fundraiser, preparing
home-cooked meals and tasty baked goods through our Guest
Chef program, or simply lending an extra hand at our annual
House lighting celebration, this year held on December 8 at
Chestnut Street.
In honor of this wonderful show of support, both of our Houses
were once again decorated in twinkling lights – each representing
a donor’s gift. Thank you to all of the individuals, organizations,
and businesses who helped to give the gift of home to families in
need this holiday season.
Special guests Ronald McDonald and Santa Claus are shown with House
guest Fuxia Caudill at the Front & Erie holiday party for families on
December 16. Fred’s Footsteps stopped by to provide some extra
holiday cheer by donating brand new winter coats for all of the families
in attendance, and Velvet Sky Bakery donated a delicious cupcake
tower for families to enjoy. Photo courtesy of Alicia Smith Photography.

Thank you to all who
contributed meals to our
Chestnut Street House,
Front & Erie House, and
our Family Rooms.
Families at Chestnut Street enjoyed a wonderful
Thanksgiving meal courtesy of Karen and Herb Lotman.
Is your group interested in joining our Guest Chef
program? We are always looking for groups to provide
dinner (and breakfast on the weekends) at our two
Houses and Family Rooms. Not only will you be providing
an invaluable service to our families, but you will have
the chance to join in a fun and rewarding teambuilding
experience with your family, friends, or coworkers.
Want to learn more? It’s easy! Go to www.philarmh.org
to view a calendar of available dates and to complete
a form to get started.
