Q. How do you determine a workout
program for the players?
A. We perform testing to evaluate each
player. We work directly with the training staff, doctors, coaches and general
manager to get feedback on where each
guy stands with regards to their abilities,
role, position and what they need to be
good at on the ice. We then determine
it with the player because he’s got to be
on board. From there, we build it. It has to
work and the player has to be part of that
process. We have to take into account
almost every aspect of the personnel to
recognize their strengths and weakness
when designing their program.

Q. How do you implement nutrition into your
program?
A. Over the years we’ve put a lot of time and energy into getting the players to understand the
importance of nutrition with regards to performance. That was probably on the backburner for
a lot of teams, but now it’s on the forefront. The
demands of the game need to be met, nutritionally. We show our players their rested metabolic
rates, how many calories they’re expending during their workouts and how to get those calories
back because calories are energy. We’re looking
to be consistent in everything we do, including
nutrition. We feed our guys breakfast, lunch, pregame snacks and post-game meals. All of our
menus ensure that guys are getting the proper
macronutrients like carbohydrates and proteins
and micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. We’ve made a concerted effort to educate
them on supplementation and sound nutrition.
Eating three meals and two snacks a day will
meet their energy demands while supplementation will enhance it all.
Q. How have the workout facilities improved
with the locker room renovations? A. We’ve
made it so that the players can do almost every-
strength & conditioning coach
thing in one place. We’ve gained a great deal of
space, which allows us to do all of our strength
and conditioning right in one area. We’ve added
turf within the confines of the weight room so
that they can warm up right there instead of having to stretch in the dressing room. We’ve added
monitors along the walls so that the guys have
instant feedback for everything they do. Whether
they’re on the ice, bikes or treadmills, they can
see their working heart rates. We use TENDO
units on weightlifting bars to measure the speed
and power behind each repetition. We’re using
iPads to tailor each player’s workout program.
These are all new things, things that we’ve tried
to facilitate for a long time.
Q. How has technology shaped strength and
conditioning?
A. It’s unending. The science is incredible and
will continue to grow. It’s not going to stop. We
have to continue to learn and be a part of that
process and make it available to our players. I
think we’re ahead of the curve. It’s just a matter
of staying there.

Sabres rookie defenseman Brayden
McNabb has stood up and sat down opposing players with some devastating open-ice
body checks over the years. From juniors to
the pros, he has thrived at stepping up at the
blueline and leveling his opposition. However,
McNabb has a lot more to offer than just delivering big hits and is working on ramping up
other aspects of his game to succeed in the
National Hockey League.

“Ever since I was younger, the upside of my
game has always been my physical play, but
I’d like to think of myself as a two-way defenseman,” said McNabb, who was drafted by
the Sabres with the 66th overall pick in the
third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. “I
have an offensive side. The stats were there
in juniors.”
McNabb scored 72 points (21+51) in 59
games with the Kootenay Ice of the Western
Hockey League during the 2010-11 season,
the third-most points by a WHL defenseman last year. In 19 WHL playoff games,
the team’s captain added an impressive
27 points (3+24), which tied for second in
scoring among all WHL skaters. In the 2011
Memorial Cup, McNabb had three assists
in four Canadian Hockey League games
against premier talent from the OHL and
QMJHL.
Before being called up to the NHL, McNabb
posted 10 points (1+9) in 19 games with the
Rochester Americans, Buffalo’s American
Hockey League affiliate, and was later selected to participate in the 2012 AHL All-Star
Classic.
“I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable
with the puck and moving up in the play,” said
the 21-year-old blueliner. “It’s a big jump [to
the pros]. That will just come with time. If the
offensive chances are there, I’m going to take
[them]. I’m just trying to move pucks in the
neutral zone and get shots through. There’s
not as much time and space up here.”
While McNabb is eager to produce on both
sides of the ice, he keeps a defense-first mentality.
“The main thing is taking care of my own
end,” he said. “I’m a physical guy and I’ve got
a big body. If the opportunity strikes, I want to
make that hit.”
Opportunity struck for McNabb this past November. As a Calgary Flames fan growing up
in the prairies of Western Canada, McNabb
admired former Flames defenseman Robyn
Regehr, now with the Sabres, for his “steady,
stay-at-home” physical style of play. Coincidentally, when Regehr went down with an
injury, the Sabres called upon the 6’4”, 204
lb. rookie to step up and fill the void. McNabb
did just that by finishing the night with a
game-high six hits against the Washington
Capitals. After making such a strong first impression, there was plenty of buzz surrounding his NHL debut.
“My phone was blowing up pretty good,”
McNabb said after the game. “I had a lot of
friends and family watching back home. I’m
from a town of only 900 people, so it was a
pretty big deal.”
The Davidson, Saskatchewan native is still
getting acclimated to life on his own. He previously lived with a “billet” family that housed

him while he played for Kootenay in British
Columbia. Getting more comfortable away
from the rink should translate to his play on
the ice.

“It’s been a lifestyle change from having a
curfew and the billet thing,” he admitted. “Living on your own, cooking your own meals,
you have a little bit more freedom in what you
can do.”
As his coaches build trust in him and give him
more freedom to make plays, Sabres fans will
get a better idea of what McNabb can do.
“When the coaches have confidence in me, it
gives me a lot of confidence on the ice,” said
McNabb, whose play has earned him special
teams minutes on the power play and penalty
kill. “When you play more, you’re more into it.
More ready.”
After a dozen NHL games, McNabb was
more than ready to score his first goal. Exactly one month after his first game, McNabb
scored on the power play with a wrist shot
from the high slot. After waiting his entire life
for that moment, he had to wait a little longer
to celebrate because it looked as if fellow Sabres rookie Luke Adam may have deflected
his shot.
“I didn’t know if it went off Luke or not,” said
McNabb, who has five points (1+4) through
20 games with the Sabres. “I celebrated as if
I scored and then I saw Luke celebrating, so I
was like ‘Oh, maybe he did score.’ It was kind
of awkward like that.”
McNabb will have plenty of opportunities to
perfect his celebration in the future as his
offensive game continues to develop. In the
meantime, he will continue to enjoy his time
in Buffalo and keep working to get better.
“[I’m] still here, so it’s pretty exciting,” he concluded. “Not a lot of people get a chance like
this.”

Fourth of six meetings between the Sabres

Eleven different Sabres recorded at least one
point in Buffalo’s 6-0 win over the Bruins on
Feb. 8. Sabres captain Jason Pominville
scored twice while Ryan Miller stopped all
36 shots that he faced to earn his third
shutout of the season.

With their 2-1 win over the New York Islanders
on Tuesday night, the Sabres improved to
18-11-2 in games in which six of their top

Q: What was it like to get your first NHL point
with an assist against the Penguins in your
hometown of Pittsburgh, PA?
A: I lived just north of the city in a town called
Cranberry, so it was pretty special to play and
get a point at Mellon Arena, a place where I
watched games as a kid. Both my dad and
grandmother were there, so it was great.
Q: Pittsburgh is pretty close to Buffalo, how often does your family drive up to cheer you on?
media, the attention, the intensity of the crowds,
the intensity of the game.
Q: You and Robyn Regehr both have a physical style of play, what have you learned from
him?
A: He’s an elite defenseman in the league
and has been for a lot of years. It’s a privilege to
play with him. The patience he has, he lets the
game come to him. That’s probably the biggest
thing I’ve learned.
A: My dad comes up as much as he can
when he’s not working. I also have a lot of family
in Windsor, ON where I go back and live in the
summertime. And with my wife’s family, it’s basically a revolving door at our house in Buffalo.
Q: Where is the best place to eat in Buffalo?
Q: How would you describe your first career
NHL playoff series last postseason?
A: I like how it’s a blue-collar town. A lot of
hardworking people.
A: The level of intensity goes up 100 times. It’s
different than any other playoffs that I’ve played.
From the OHL to the minors, it’s just a completely different atmosphere in the NHL: the

lucky to be so close to the Games and
actually got to see the Olympic Torch
relay right from the balcony of our
townhouse!
After living in four different cities around the world
over the past eight years, our family’s journey has
finally brought us to Buffalo.
Both Christian and I were born and raised in Germany – Christian is from Moers and I am from
Tönisvorst. We grew up about 30 minutes away
from each other and Christian began his hockey
career in Krefeld, which is right in between our
hometowns. After winning the German Championship with the Krefeld Penguins in 2003, Christian signed with the San Jose Sharks and we
moved to the United States.
We enjoyed six wonderful years living in San
Jose (and one season in Cleveland, during the
NHL lockout in 2004-05). California became our
second home over the years and we made many
friends in both cities. Our first daughter, Leni, was
actually born in San Jose in 2009 so it will always
be a special place for us.
Christian was traded to the Canucks in 2009 so our family moved
to Vancouver, another beautiful city.
We were very excited to move to an
NHL city in Canada and enjoyed making new friends, while visiting with old
ones (hockey is one big family all over
the world). One of the more memorable
things from our time there was when
Christian got to play for Team Germany
at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which

The Canucks made it all the way
to the Stanley Cup Finals last year
so it was a very exciting spring for
our family. Christian’s longest and
hardest season didn’t end with a
trophy but we did welcome our
second daughter, Milla, at the end of April. After
the season ended in June, our new family of four
returned to Germany for the summer with a lot of
memories (and a lot of luggage!).
Things got even more exciting over the summer
when Christian was picked up by the Sabres and
we started planning our move to the East Coast.
Our family has already met so many wonderful
people in Buffalo and we’ve enjoyed exploring
the city. We have even enjoyed the snow, which
we haven’t seen a lot of in the past eight years.
We’re looking forward to spending many wonderful years in Buffalo—but we’re most
excited about
winning a Stanley Cup as part
of the Sabres
family!

The Sabres will once again feature variable ticket pricing for tickets to all home games. The
five pricing levels include Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value. The classifications are
determined by the opponent, time of the year, day of the week, rivalries, and games against
all-star players. This season there is one (1) Platinum game, eleven (11) Gold games, eighteen
(18) Silver games, five (5) Bronze games, and five (5) Value games.
Sabres Tickets are available in person at the First Niagara Center Box Office.
